Ann Reinking followed Debbie Allen in the 1986 Broadway revival of "Sweet Charity," and, like Allen, was taught the role of Charity Hope Valentine by Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. You will see her here dancing with Bebe Neuwirth, with whom she would dance again about a decade later in "Chicago." With Allison Williams, Michael Rupert.

What a gem! Thanks for making it public. You have single handedly made it possible for me to see the iconic performances I only ever dreamt of seeing! You wouldn't by chance have anything of Liza when she went into Chicago while Gwen was ill? I can dream, right? Or Radiant Baby? I was playing Jon in TTB and my director kept telling me I NEEDED to play Keith in it...and the closest I've come is a soundboard recording of a live show. I just wish I could finally see the role I was apparently "born to play." 😉

Sorry Mick. I just saw your analysis. My analysis published just now explains that it is an IR camera with a defective sensor. It hangs from the balloon and rotates with the wind or unwinding of the support cable. The precise tracking is simply the fixed sensor in the camera..

Not gonna lie, one of the 1st productions I saw of this show was when my best friend, at the time, was a senior in HS and because she wasn't a twig, she was cast as Nickie. The director knew she deserved the lead...and focused the trio on Nickie. I can still remember bawling my eyes out watching her carry the number. I was on my feet as soon as the dance break started and my friend stopped the show cold, as she had worked her ass off, leaping down stage doing Charity's original choreo and placement. It made so much sense within the show, given Charity already had so many songs of her own. And not surprisingly, she was given an Honorable Mention by the Papermill Rising Stars...only not getting an actual nomination because even Papermill wanted to know why the hell she hadn't been cast as Charity all along. It was HS. That's the time when you should get to play roles you may necessarily never get to play again. The girl who WAS Charity didn't get a nomination and had no plans of pursuing performing after HS. Papermill almost reprimanded them for not utilizing her more. Then, that summer, she played Eva Peron at our summer camp upstate. She was breathtaking and I'll never forget it. I had to leave camp a few days early that summer, so the only show I could do in the 3rd semester was Songs For A New World, otherwise I would have gotten to play Che opposite her. Not complaining! This was 2000! We were literally one of the handful of productions of that show in existence, at that point. JRB grew up going to the same summer camp and specifically gave us the rights because of his personal attachment to French Woods. He came up to work with us for a day...and he may or may not have made me cry during rehearsal...but I was 17 and it was exactly what I needed to elevate my performance. He was awful to me...but I loved it then and still feel lucky today, knowing he wouldn't have bothered getting on my back if he didn't know it would yield a better performance. That summer, my partner and I did I'd Give It All For You and it became one of the highlights of the entire summer! The camp even nominated us for "Best On Stage Duo" alongside pairs like Candide & Cunegonde, Salieri & Amadeus, and Luisa & Matt...for that 5 minute moment that was I'd Give It All For You. It didn't hurt that my duet partner had one of the most gorgeous female belts I've ever heard, still to this day! Of course we didn't win...but it was such an amazing feeling to know that working tirelessly on the song, staging, and story translated enough to knock out so many obvious iconic on stage duos, like Bobby & Sheila or Pseudolys & Hysterium from getting a nod!

Fascinating. The over choreographed style of Fosse is at times fabulous (the Trio is genius here ) other times his numbers can grow irritating (Somebody loves me) . Reinking here in strong form really respects the Gwen Verdon origin of Charity in her interpretation. One gets the ménage that was Fosse/Verdon/Reinking very strongly in this mid 80’s revival. Magically enough Bebe Neuwirth also highlighted in this posting in the trio dance became part of the lineage and win her a Tony for best supporting actress in a musical.

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Absolutely--I've only seen the revival when it comes to the Fosse staging, but of course it was largely a recreation (with a few changes to the costumes, a new version of Bravest Individual, etc)--but it convinced me that the show only truly works in the Fosse staging (including that brilliant set). I guess no big surprise since, like Bennett and A Chorus Line it really was his creation--he was the one who told Coleman and Leigh where to put the songs, he wrote the original script before Neil Simon took over, etc.
