I decided to start 2021 by rereading one of my favorite books, Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy. In this video, I try to analyze part two. My main goal is to discuss it with you in the comments and to broaden my perspective. I hope that the next video will be better than this one and that I’ll have more interesting thoughts to share!

These videos are brilliant. The character development discussed and the key moments are all very well explained. Love it. Also about this part, I think Anna is now really torn between vronsky and her son. Any drastic step taken in any direction will affect alot of people. Hope to see kitty and levin together soon.

Thanks for these. They are awesome. Loving some of the symbolism that you have outlined in the scene that I missed while listening as an audiobook. Thank you

thanks for sharing your knowledge. as always. learned a lot . looking forward to rest. among other things, i never realized the great bear analogy before. i did find the funny story funny, but its hard to explain why. btw "technically" in russia in 19th century married women like dolly did legally own their own property as opposed to husband owning it after marriage. this was in contrast to situation in western europe like uk. that is why stiva has to reconcile with dolly before selling it since he can't sell with without her consent . also imo, saying that was "main reason " for reconciliation is wrong, since he himself found intrusion of that reason in to reconciliation distasteful. .

Thanks for the information! I didn't know that women had property rights in Imperial Russia. Stiva finds it distasteful, but it doesn't change the truth.

I didn't know that about Levin's name being derived from Tolstoy's, even though I know the character's connection. There is so much symbolism with the horserace, Vronsky's decision to continue while knowing the risks, his objection of the risks mirrors Anna's emotions toward Alexandrovch--I didn't know about the name Frou-Frou and what that meant. That is a little straight forward, even for Vronsky haha.

You can tell that Tolstoy wasn't team Vronsky.

Still really enjoying it Sophia. I found the horse racing scene hard to read as I dislike the sport and the harm that often happens to the horses but it was definitely compelling and I hadn’t thought about that connection between Vronsky and the horse in the same way as Vronsky and Anna. I actually felt a little sorry for Karenin, despite his coldness, his inability to talk to Anna about Vronsky and the way she turns on him when he does, plus he is ill so that doesn’t bode well. Kitty seemed to make a miraculous recovery but then her illness was purely psychological and the way she falls in love with Varenka, becomes philanthropic then suddenly decides it’s not really her was amusing. I love the scenes with Levin in the country as there is some really beautiful writing about nature though I think it’s funny that Koznyshev says that he loves hunting etc as they get you in touch with nature while his brother lives his life in nature simply by his work. I liked the scenes of Levin mowing with the peasants and it’s interesting what you said about the Venus, Great Bear riddle as my edition says that Tolstoy made an error and that Venus would have been setting not rising being in the west but I imagine poetic license is more important 😉. Levin seemed to brush off Kitty being ill so I’m interested to see if their relationship goes anywhere and am just really invested in all these characters already.

Same! The horse race is hard to read! Have you noticed the parallel with the Roman games? One of the horses is called Gladiator, and Karenina says "what an inclination we all have for these cruel spectacles". I really want to talk more about Karenin and Vronsky. They deserve more "screen time".

I can see I have some catching up to do, I'm still reading through part one. Is the decor and lighting connected to the book?
