I am convinced, after over a decade of independent research, that Edgar Allan Poe was not the author of "Annabel Lee." My research subject, Mathew Franklin Whittier, would have privately shared it with him in early 1842, along with "The Raven" and "Some Words with a Mummy." Poe never published "Annabel Lee" during his lifetime, despite (as I believe) having a copy since 1842. Probably, after Poe falsely claimed authorship of "The Raven" in a brazen public scam, Mathew privately warned Poe that he would expose him if he dared publish "Annabel Lee." Poe re-wrote the last four lines to make the poem macabre, when Mathew would have written of his late wife's spirit visitations in dreams.

I've heard similar rumors about Shakespeare. If what you say is true, it's one of the saddest stories ever, especially since Poe's work is one of the most famous examples of American literature. It makes me reconsider Allen's disappointment, which makes sense now. Maybe Mr. Allen wasn't as harsh or dissatisfied as we've been led to believe. But we'll never know for absolute certainty, and that's what makes it fun, isn't it? like ''Jack the Ripper''
