This week I'm reacting to a very special Swedish Heavy Metal band SABATON and their hugely requested song "Christmas Truce" that tells a true story of a ceasefire between the British and the Germans in WWI that happened on a Christmas day.

Anna, the reason why Sabaton was able to get Floor to sing the ending vocals? Because the blonde-haired guy, Hannes, is Floor's husband. And no matter how many times I hear this song, the combination of the symphonic elements and Floor's voice at the end gives me chills. Besides No Bullets Fly, Christmas Truce is one of the few songs I would not mind hearing in the stores during Christmas, because of its message. Lastly, the cross you see Pär carving into actually still stands near Ypres, Belgium. Lest we forget.

Excellent reaction. Joakim and Par started writing this in 2016 but wanted it to be perfect because it is so special a story, so they worked on it until 2020. I think they succeeded. You should consider reacting to Sabaton's 'Talvisota,' which is about the Winter War or "White Death" about Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä. You might be interested to know that Joakim Broden, Sabaton's lead singer, has no formal vocal training. He started as the band's keyboardist, and they asked him to be the lead singer until they found one. As he puts it, "They never did. Lazy bastards." As you noticed, the outro was sung by Floor Jansen, who is married to Hannes van Dahl, the Sabaton drummer.

Epic story, fantastic video, great melody, 'interesting' end credits. It can't get much better than this. After watching your reaction I have to ask, you do know that Floor is married to Sabaton's drummer, Hannes Van Dahl, right? Hence the collaboration! Hannes is the blond guy, stepping onto the battlefield first, unarmed and with his hands up. One of my favourite songs/videos by them is 'En Livstid I Krig', performed live in Gothenborg!

Hannes Van Dahl name is kind of funny, specially when he is married to a Netherlands girl. In Swedish its pronounced the same as Vandal, and that seams to be the point in him changing his name. Its seams to be a joke played on him as a teenager. Dahl was his original Sur name, but he was Karl-hannes original, change it for Van, so it become Van-dahl. But in Dutch its like "from" .. and it make it sound like its a nobel name, while the intention is very much the opposite.

Thank you Anna for such a beautiful reaction and analysis to this masterpiece work of art. Most Sabaton songs are respectful tributes to actual military events and history. I saw them live with Epica back in October and they put on an amazing live show (as did Epica). When they played this song the whole theater was singing the chorus at the top of our lungs. As someone who served (20 year veteran) I think they perfectly captured the brotherhood that all soldiers share, even across battle lines. Then that beautiful ending with the cross that still stands today in Ypres, Belgium and then Floor's soaring vocals! Ugh! The tears start flowing every time. Hannes van Dahl, Sabaton's drummer, is Floor's husband ( they met while Sabaton and ReVamp were touring together in the US). I wonder if he asked her, "Sweetheart can you help me and the guys out on a song?". Thank you again for your lovely insights!

The Sabaton song Livgardet has elements from a song I know as a christmas song in my homeland. The song Hearts of Iron has the guitarsolo from Johan Sebastian Bach, and the song Defence of Moscow got the russian antemn in the guitarsolo. So yes, Sabaton doesn't just tell history about the wars, but also pick parts out from the music history, as in Carol of the bells.

Maybe you wanna try `Soldiers of heaven´ or `Bismark´ from Sabaton Or `To Hell and Back´ And try out their history cannel! They try to make an episode about every song they have - and these songs hit on a different level once you know the story behind it And if you dont like a song - listen to it the next day again! Sabaton songs had a tendency to hit on the second listening I started listening to Sabaton in year 2019 via `Fields of Verdun´ and have been happy since then to not klick away the song on the fist hearing Also Joakim (the vokalist) isnt a trained singer at all (I think he sayed it in an interview with `The carismatic voice´ that he out of the original members back in 1999 was the least shitiest to sing - and they will find another singer ;) 23 years later we see the outcome of this search And yes, Floor Jansen was even on stage with Sabaton at least a few times - althoug she didnt sing - just visited her husband (Hannes Van Dahl - the drummer)

It's interesting that you pointed out how much care they put into this. As I recall, they said this one had been worked on for years before its release, because they wanted to make sure they got it right. So even by their very high professional standards, this one was especially important to them. I also appreciate you giving some love to Floor's performance during the closing credits, as most reactors either skip right past that part, or don't notice who is singing. I'm sure approximately one million people will point out that she's married to Sabaton's drummer, Hannes (the blonde introduced in the grenade scene), but now it's one million and one. 🤷‍♂ Thank you and Happy Holidays! 🤟

FYI the cross exists: The 'Khaki Chums' memorial cross, St Yvon, Belgium, was erected in remembrance of the Christmas Truce in 1914. You can find it on Google maps (though its much smaller)

I'm thinking that you might enjoy reacting to Sabatons song "No Bullets Fly" . ...I also, for some reason, have a strong desire to learn how to speak Finnish. How strange...

Praw! Your analysis is amazingly sharp covering every aspect of the song, kudo’s! Can not think of a professional reactor that did the same: most are vocally interested, some of them with an eye for the composition as well, but you💪 BTW your Finnish sounds beautiful❤

I love the code switching (linguistics term) in this video and the fact that I got to hear some Finnish too. I love Sabaton and this video for many reasons. It's deceptively deep. The way they blew up the piano at the end? "Oh you thought we stopped killing each other? Hahaha screw you" and they start mowing each other down again. Some of the people who were part of the truce had to be sent home, but the war went on. This does a really good job of showing how insane war is and how a person who was a friend 5 minutes ago can become an enemy because that's what the government wants. It's not "we're all friends and the world is perfect," it's more like "we WERE friends but then we stopped, 5am time to start shooting lmao" Great reaction. More Sabaton please! Try Bismarck!

Sabaton just released their newest song "The First Soldier" Would be very interesting to have you react to that. An amazing and popular songs would be Bismarck. A really interesting song that is very special for sabaton would be Ballad of Bull.

In this song they have captured a moment of true madness, when the first man came up out of the trenches. I can't even picture this happening today. A moment that went by with the blink of an eye and yet if allowed to continue would it have caused the war to end sooner?

@@martine3293 No need to any 'convincing'. As l said here, lt's the most convincing "new" Christmas song of the last couple of years. And I still find their military obsession unfamiliar to me.

When I saw the annoncement I remembered your recent suggestion for this special song and how thankful I was for that. While music/vocals/movie are most impressive - till the very end of credits - I still feel some ambivalence: "Lest we forget" should have but did not work. "When will we ever learn ?". Looking forward to Anna's reaction. 👍

A great song, a great video and message! I do like the way you do swich between english and finnish in your reaction to this. It makes it vivid. Kan du lite svenska med? All good to u. Take care and stay safe in these strange times. (Farfar sa alltid: Finlands Sak är våran Sak. Han var mån om bägge länderna. Han var major i Sverige under krigen). Big hugs!❤
