ANNE BANCROFT (born Anna Maria Louisa Italiano; 1931 - 2005) was an American actress, director, screenwriter and singer. Respected for her acting prowess and versatility, Bancroft received an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. She is one of only 24 thespians to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting.
Associated with the method acting technique, having studied under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, Bancroft made her film debut in the noir thriller Don't Bother to Knock (1952). Following a string of repetitive and glamorous supporting roles, her film career took a toll with executives reluctant to cast her in prestige roles. In 1958 Bancroft made her Broadway debut with the play Two for the Seesaw, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The following year she portrayed Anne Sullivan in the original Broadway production of The Miracle Worker, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Following her continued success on stage, Bancroft's film career was revived when she was cast in the acclaimed film adaptation of The Miracle Worker (1962) for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her film career further progressed with Oscar nominated performances in The Pumpkin Eater (1964), The Graduate (1967), The Turning Point (1977), and Agnes of God (1985). Bancroft continued to act in the latter half of her life, with prominent roles in The Elephant Man (1980), Garbo Talks (1984), To Be or Not to Be (1983), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Torch Song Trilogy (1988), Home for the Holidays (1995), Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), G.I. Jane (1997), and Great Expectations (1998). She received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including for the television films Broadway Bound (1992), Deep in My Heart (1999), for which she won, and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (2003). Bancroft died on June 6, 2005, at the age of 73, following her battle with uterine cancer. She was married to actor and comedian Mel Brooks, with whom she had a son named Max.
The Charlie Rose Show (PBS/1991-2017) is an American television interview and talk show, with Charlie Rose as executive producer, executive editor, and host. The show was syndicated on PBS until 2017 and is owned by Charlie Rose, Inc. Rose interviewed thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, businesspersons, leaders, scientists, and fellow newsmakers.

@@lauralutz4538 I'd say it is impossible to know truly even the closest people we encounter, let alone the cosmos which is an individual, and presumably "knowing them" depends upon them speaking, because it's speech which permits psychological revelation. But then we can encounter someone through written language, and clearly encountering Anne Bancroft is a raindrop in a river compared with Shakespeare, or William Blake, or Emily Dickinson.

Anne Bancroft (Annie as I affectionately call her) absolutely has my heart! I adore her and I adore this interview. The reason I love her so much is because she was strong, bawdy, gentle, compassionate, and tender. She wasn't like the ditzy Marilyn Monroe types (don't get me wrong I love MM) but she had gumption and grit, and she was gentle. There's something special about Anne Bancroft. Miss you, Annie! Thank you for leaving us with so much beautiful work.

Pt. III: When she said how much men liked the seduction aspect of The Graduate, it evoked spontaneous laughter from both of them. But no other actress in the world could have performed it with the brilliance of Bancroft. Trust me, NO ONE.

A great lesson that only a great actor has the security to give (even though Anne seems to have been touched with that healthy insecurity which I believe is another sign of greatness): just be honest about your life. It was good to learn that she took time off to raise her son...I always thought it was that no one was offering her parts. We lost her too soon but she left a marvellous record of talent. I would have loved to have seen her in 'Two for the Seesaw'.

This interview is priceless! She is so full of life and energy, and her ebullience shines! From her truly powerful and virtuosic performance in "The Miracle Worker" thankfully also captured on film, garnering her Oscar win to the aging seductress of Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate", she remains one Theatre and Film's most cherished actresses! And this interview shows just how she accomplished it -- with the love of her acting profession, her tremendously hard work, her terrific sense of humor (NO surprise whatsoever that the love of her life was Mel Brooks), and her thoroughly charming personality. OH -- just wish we could have seen a final chapter in her life (after she died too young!) -- she'd have been the perfect spokesperson for us old-timers!!! Thankfully her work will love on...forever!

Anne caused a major controversy at the Oscar’s when she kissed Sidney Poitier on the cheek after handing him his Oscar for best actor. That historic moment caused more controversy than celebration. Sidney and Anne’s moment of embrace offended so many people who persecuted them by complaining to the academy and the studios. As well, Anne’s genuine reaction of excitement and happiness was so offensive that she received death threats. Whenever I heard about such things being so controversial I would say “I can’t believe” that happened. But given our past and the way things are currently going I stopped believing that such things could happen.

Boy, he’s a terrible interviewer, always as been. He’s a nice guy but, I can see, he’s driving her nuts. She’s a very serious-minded person and choices her words very carefully. She doesn’t like it when you don’t quote her exactly the way she said it. That’s when, if you are a good interviewer, and you get caught in a trap, where the person says, “l didn’t say that.” You change your questioning to asking in a question format, not a statement format. Example, Anne, you said, you were feeling great. No, I didn’t say that. Throughout the interview, she must of said that 4 or 5 times. When you’re dealing with a very precise person, you better make sure you’re listening to every word when you bring up something. Or, if you’re not sure or her precise quote, ask her in a sincere question format, Anne, That was very interesting what you said a few minutes ago about taking the time off from acting when you were with your child, you seemed so happy, tell me more about that time in your life. Don’t say, You said you were so happy. She’ll jump all over you. The first time, I could understand, but he kept doing it, and she kept saying, “I didn’t say that.” She was gracious and very nice. But, interviewing is an art. You gotta be extremely careful especially with actors. She even said, “You’re so funny Charlie.” That wasn’t a complement. He should replay this interview a couple of times and go over his presentation for the next interview, learn from it. When you have a person of her caliber, you better do your homework and listen and don’t interrupt her. It was a good interview only because she made it good. She is a true professional and if you piss her off, she’s not afraid to tell you where to get off. When he said, “You guys have such a great relationship.” I can read her mind. How does this guy know anything about my relationship. He’s trying to be gracious. That doesn’t work with precise, serious-type perfectionist. Ask questions, not statements.

@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 Yeah, I nearly threw up when he said that to her too. She was a great actress and she really was great in that role of Mrs. Robinson. But, she did say, "I really felt embarrassed doing that scene." Then, this idiot says, "Come on, you got a great body." That was totally ignorant of him to say that to her. I felt like screaming through my laptop, you idiot, it doesn't matter what shape her body is in! He's got this fetish about her in that role. This interview proved he doesn't listen to his guests and he can't help himself. He's a moron and can't get out of his own way. Personally, I thought Ms. Bancroft was much better in The Miracle Worker than The Graduate. But, I agree with you completely. The fact of her greatness as an actress is proven because she took a role that wasn't really her personality. She played the role so well, this idiot had dreams about being the Graduate! She had him figured out 5 minutes into the interview. Can you imagine when she went home and Mel said to her, honey, I'm sorry about that idiot drooling on you. And she said, "Ahhh, ya see what I mean Mel, this is what we're up against!"
