① memo 20170225 ~ Anne Frank's Bells ~ Anne writes 11 July 1942 in here diary about the 'Westertoren' (Western tower) bells : "I loved it from the start, and especially in the night it's like a faithful friend."
Here the Westertoren bells are chiming and striking 6 PM over the hiding place of Anne Frank. That house is the illuminated house here at the very end of this canal (Bloemgracht) where I am filming at twilight a couple of days ago, where it ends in the Prinsengracht canal with Anne's house on the bank across the canal. Amsterdam

So many care free lives under those sounds, hard to imagine the fear that happened in earshot of them for so long.

Is this exactly the sounds Anna heard in hiding before they took them down?

@@michelvanderburg Right…but the description doesn’t specify if it’s the same exact music that Anne heard every 15 minutes that first year and a half in hiding. Around that time the bells were taken down by the Germans and melted down for use in the war. So, did they make an exact replica?

@@babygayle6842 certainly not the same music - that changes . once in a while ... of course the sound i different too indoors .... whether new made bells had the same sound i will try to check .... good remark ;)

The reason was that the Germans had been led to believe that the bells had sounded when Michiel de Ruyter was buried, but he was not buried here at all. However, the Germans believed the story. The bells were then hung back in place. Seys-Inquart venerated the Dutch and English naval heroes of yesteryear. You can read more about this naval hero on MokumsNL.....
