What does the LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ANNE OF CLEVES say and what were the dying wishes of a former Queen of England before she went to meet her maker in 1557? In this six wives documentary from History Calling I’ll take you through the final days in the life of Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of Henry VIII and the legal preparations made for the death of a former Queen who had held the anomalous position of ‘the King’s sister’ after the annulment of her 6 month marriage to Henry back in 1540, but who lost even that distinction upon his death in 1547. The will describes how Anne (whose marriage, however brief, has arguably made her one of the most famous Queens in history) wished to be buried and who she left her belongings to. It provides insights into the social circle she had built in England, her role as a landowner and mistress of a large household, what she considered to be her most prized possessions and the relationships between Anne of Cleves and Mary I, Anne of Cleves and Elizabeth I (or rather the future Elizabeth I) and Anne of Cleves and Katherine Willoughby, Duchess of Suffolk. It also indicates what a wealthy Tudor lady she was, despite her complaints to the contrary. In addition, the video will look at how far the last will of a former Queen was observed by her executors and by the Tudor family she had been absorbed into.
The death of an ex Queen of England was an exceptional event in the country’s history and Anne’s fate and the preparations she made for it provide an insight into the unique position this one time bride of Henry VIII found herself in as her life neared its end. As I’ve discussed in another video, she was given an ostentatious funeral and in this documentary, you’ll also see the tomb of Anne of Cleves in Westminster Abbey, not far from those of her former step-daughters, Mary and Elizabeth Tudor.

Sounds like a generous and kind friend. We can definitely say she was quite skilled at diplomacy, what w/ accepting her annulment w/out complaint, and the special relationships that she had w/ both Mary and Elizabeth. Not sure about Edward though. He kinda sounds like a bit of a poo, but genetically speaking, that's hardly surprising. All I really was thinking was how nice it would have been to be her friend, because I also am fond of rec'ing jewelry as a gift. :) Thanks again, HC, great video!

I have sometimes wondered if she had a secret love. A close companion for company and comfort. I think it unlikely though, since if she had become pregnant then word would almost certainly have reached Henry (even though the baby would have no doubt been brought up by others elsewhere), and she would have been in trouble. After escaping the Royals in Germany, particularly her brother then Henry, I think it doubtful she would have risked putting herself in danger of any sort. So sad she couldn't go on and and marry a man of her choosing and be happy with him. That would have been an even happier ending for her.

@@angr3819 I dunno- Katherine Parr married the man of her choosing after Henry died, & we know how horribly that ended. As a wealthy woman, being single was a pretty good choice- you kept control over your goods & lands, & didn't risk an abusive husband &/or death in childbirth. Anne clearly had many friends, & you can be perfectly happy without a romantic partner. She may have had one tho, & just didn't risk pregnancy with him.

This is a bit off-topic, but I had to refresh my memory about Katherine Willoughby when it was mentioned that she received a ring. She had known Anne ever since her first arrival in England; she and her then-husband Charles Brandon Duke of Suffolk were sent especially by Henry to greet her. So theirs was a long friendship. But what was particularly interesting was Katherine's situation in 1557. She had fled with her second husband to the Continent to escape persecution as Protestants under Mary. By the time of Anne's will, she and her husband and young son had found refuge in what is now Lithuania, then part of Poland. Anne must have known of her circumstances at the time of writing her will, so I just have to wonder how she thought the ring could be conveyed to Katherine? And there is Anne, requesting favors from Queen Mary, who had sent a messenger after Katherine and her family "requesting" that they return to England...

@@Moebian73 he thought she was ugly and said she was no virgin. Apparently she washed even less than he and smelt. However, he didn't smell of roses as his leg ulcers plus the various concoctions put on them reportedly stunk to high heaven. It was more likely that he was being pique when he pretended to not be the King, to test her, to see if she would realise he was after all the King. Of course she didn't. Imo, she seems to have not been enamoured by him as she was so willing to accept the annulment/divorce. From being under the thumb of royal male family in Germany to being sent to marry a frankly dirty smelly old man and chance her head being cut off, she was no doubt very relieved to be given the option of not having such men around her.

Anne is what psychologists might call “emotionally saavy”- high emotional IQ- reads others, restrains her impulses, thinks things through, and maintains good relatonships among all sides, not getting triangulated. As in Mary vs Eliz. She Also knew how to handle narcissists and when to roll with the punches vs. fight back. Henry appreciated that.

I think Anne’s will shows great generosity. From what little I know about historical fashion, her gift of cloth to her servants was probably more of use to them than jewelry would have been. The cloth was often the most expensive part of clothing and would be reused/remade repeatedly as the fashion changed. (This is part of the reason extant garments are rare) I also think the will hints at Anne’s potential of having been a good queen, had Henry given her the chance. The Tudors show isn’t a paragon of historical accuracy but there is a scene in it where Henry visits Anne and his children are all there in the house. They have a lovely family dinner and she and Henry play cards. You see him at the end looking around and it’s clear he’s wondering if he made a huge mistake by divorcing her. He probably could have had a gentle and happy life with her that would have brought his family together. I love that scene. Anne of Cleves was the winner at the end.

Such a tactful kind and thoughtful lady! She obviously loved graciously and gave generously! The ring you mentioned with an H and I could be a ring of Jane Seymours, the initial "I" for Ioanna (Joanna / Joan/ Jane) , and intertwined with an H suggests that Henry might have had it made for Jane during her Queenship.

Henry blew it. She was intelligent, thoughtful, and honest. They would've made a power couple. Meanwhile the king made a point to run after women who were eye candy, well except Seymour, maybe she was a woman where it is in the eye of the holder. Her time being locked away during her earlier years, I think this made her patient and aware of the actions of her mother and brother. An actor who suffered abuse stated that being in that situation creates someone who can 'read a room' almost instantly. She could've been a great ambassador for England

I’m curious as to how Hever Castle ended up in the possession of the crown. The Boleyn family owned it outright, as they had purchased it long before Anne came into being. I suppose it might’ve been seized by Henry as a means of punishment, but her parents were still living and owned the place through inheritance until their deaths, and I know Mary lived at the family’s other residence, Blickling Hall. Might be an interesting topic to look into one day.

According to the Hever Castle site: "In addition, Henry allowed Anne to lease a number of manors to enhance her status and income, including Hever, at an annual rent of £9-13s-3½d. Hever Castle had become Crown property after the death of Thomas Boleyn in 1539. As Thomas’ male heir, George, had been executed in 1536, Hever had passed to Thomas’ brother, Sir James Boleyn, who sold it to King Henry VIII for £200 on 31st December 1540."

Hi, this is probably not that interesting for you, but I deal a lot with the history of cleves and may be able to help you with the Waldeck question. The Count of Waldeck meant here was indeed her cousin. He was the son of Anna's aunt, who was also called Anna and the daughter of Duke Johann II. of Cleves. Behind her marriage lies, by the way, also a quite a tragic love story... only this time with a happy end. Anna had married Philipp III of Waldeck, who was not really a promising match for her rank, on her own volition and in secret. To prevent the consummation of the marriage, her own brother (Johann III.) held her captive for several years. But she stood firm and prevailed in the end. In many respects a truly unusual story in those times. Greetings from Germany :)

@@HistoryCalling Yes I still have a lot of friends there. I know a few of the parents who have children in the school. They didn’t lose their child but, they look like they had. My daughter drove me to Uvalde last Thursday to lay flowers at the school and spend some time with my friends. We brought arts and crafts for every child from the school to try to put a smile on the children. The whole thing was so surreal and heartbreaking. When I lived there I never imagined something this evil happening here in this small Texas town. I never imagine to see journalists from the UK, Germany, Mexico and even South Korea. So now the whole world knows how incompetent the law enforcement was. They also know the hypocrisy of the Republican Party is. I’m not sure if gun reform will pass by Congress bipartisan but, at least some talking. Ted Cruz, who I hate, went to the NRA convention in Houston to speak and said guns don’t kill people, people with guns kill people. Ugh! I’m tired of hearing excuses. In the nineties they blamed it on violent video games and now they blame it on mental illness. It’s one excuse after another. Only in America you see mass shootings. The weapon mass shooters use is the AF15. When I worked as a nurse, until covid sent me into retirement, I have seen many gunshot victims. The AR15 has caused more carnage on a body than a hand weapon or a rifle. Poor innocent victims. We deserve better from our elected officials.

The fact that she provided the cloth which was always the most expensive part of making any garment especially back then makes perfect sense for the time period. Any cloth that could possibly cost 13 Shillings the yard was some really nice s*** and I'm sure they were perfectly happy to wear it. As then they would have clothes to go into mourning for anyone else in their family presumably for the rest of their lives as long as they didn't change size too much. Having such ritually significant Garments paid for by your Patron so that you could mourn them properly and have the use of those clothes for the rest of your life was actually a pretty big burden off of these people who had served her for so long. Though it's not stated I'm sure it was implied that the household Tailor would simply make up the appropriate garments with the fabric purchased. So it's not like she was expecting them to make their own clothes. Servants would have had very little cause to interact directly with their mistress except to report to her or show off something when they were done. Ensuring that their wages were paid for the year so that they could take care of themselves until they could find new employment for the winter was a perfectly reasonable bequeath for each of them. They would have had no expectation of anything grander. At this time the rents were done in quarters and that is why she wanted her household to remain open so that all of the rent for the quarter in which she died could be collected to handle her debts and bequeaths. Nearly all clothing from this time would have been mended, altered and redesigned for the remainder of the owner's life. Even in Queen Elizabeth's England there as still a strong tradition of mourning by wearing all black even though the fashion for what those clothes look like for men and women had altered. It would be completely reasonable to piece the new style out of the old using the fine fabric of a former patron's granting. For really nicely made cloth the garments for morning wear could be passed down through two or three generations. I am certain the cloth made for morning such a high-status individual would be made very durable. The most important thing to learn from her will is that she increased the marriage portion for the maids of Honor who were living with her. She wanted to make sure that these girls could make good marriages at least a little above their station by virtue of these very nice dowrys. By sending one of the girls to Elizabeth she was clearly hoping that her former step-daughter would assist the young woman in making a good marriage. It may also have been a consideration for the fact that the girl had no surviving male relatives to make such arrangements for her. There by giving her to The Royal Heir Apparent Elizabeth could protect her from Mary if there was any bad blood between them. Ann would have been perfectly aware of that Elizabeth was still Protestant and the servant may also have been Protestant and therefore in need of such protection.

Superb video as always! To follow the thread of the HI ring being formerly for Henricus and Ioanna (Jane), is there any evidence that Henry had monogrammed items refashioned for wives? We do know several had monogrammed items designed for them, with your video commenting on a HA jewel of Anne’s and the extant Holbeins designs for other H+ monogram - correct? I’m curious because in The Wolf Hall series a few specific jewelled items including a miniature prayer book are refashion from HK (or was it C?) to HA and then again to HI, much to the entertainment of the narrator Cromwell who attributes it to Henry being a bit chea rather than a conscious desire to obliterate the precious wife’s legacy. Mantell alludes to other initials or even motifs, like the pomegranate of Aragon, that would assiduously removed from fabrics or windows or wood carvings upon the change of queens - but it’s a fictional Series.

Anne of Cleves was the daughter of a biconfessional couple: Her father was Lutheran-ish (he actually tended to a "middle way") and her mother was Catholic and was the one raising Anne and her sisters in a conservative manner. Also, it was still the early Age of Confessionalization. So it stands to reason, that Anne had no problems aligning her outward expression of faith with that of the respective ruler. Also, while under Henry VIII, the Church of England was still technically Catholic -- without Pope and monasteries, mind -- and it was under Edward, when Protestantism became more influential in the English Church.

The odd sum of £66-something it was may well have represented a sum held (or to be paid for some reason) in Scottish merks/marks. The fact that £66 is roughly two-thirds of £100 always gives rise to a suspicion that the calculation has originally been made in some currency that uses base 3, of which the Scottish merk is the most likely candidate. Perhaps Anne simply had some merks in her treasury and wanted to pass them on to people who could make good use of them. Also, 'H & I' would refer to Henry and Jane (Seymour), the I and the J being virtually interchangeable in those days - especially where 'devices' were concerned.

When she and Henry first met, he came into the room she was standing in, dressed in plain clothing, and tried to kiss her. She, being affianced to the king himself, did not return the gesture. This slighted Henry. He wanted her to fall deeply in love with him just by sight, and completely failed to understand that young women who were already engaged did not partake in such behaviors as loving a man who is not her intended at first sight. He left, coming back later dressed as the king he actually was and introduced himself. However, having mistaken her virtue for coldness, his ego took a hit and he never got over it. Later, they went on to become very good friends so I think that they must have talked it out eventually. She'd have been a very, very good queen for England, but Henry wanted passion in a wife and there just wasn't any of that between them.

I apologize if this is a repeat, as my first comment may have been flagged for including an outside link, but could the initials of 'H and I' be a reference to Henry VIII and Jane Seymour? There is a drawing of a cup designed for Jane extant in the British Museum, designed by Hans Holbein, which depicts one of Henry's favorite love knots and has their initials depicited as 'H and I'. Thank you for another great video!

I was thinking of that too, but what would Anne be doing with such a ring? Perhaps it was part of whatever jewelry they had started to give her as queen and it never got taken back for Katherine Howard.

@@katjack2780 I thought that too, but also thought it'd be weird for Anne to have a Henry-&-Jane ring. And I can't imagine greedy Henry forgetting about anything valuable .

Yes, H & I would usually mean Henry and Jane, but like yourself and Kat Jack, I wondered too what on earth Anne would have such a ring for, especially as Jane was already dead by the time Anne came to England. One of life's little mysteries I suppose. Yes, I'm afraid comments with links don't get past the KZfaq filters.

Thank you so much for your answer. I can also understand the complexity around the why, especially when we probably can't ever know unless another primary source turns up. Maybe in fifty years we'll be pleasantly surprised.

I didn't know that! I assume you mean Catherine's niece Eleanor, daughter of Philip of Hapsburg & Juana of Castile? If so, that's kinda hilarious, cos before Henry married Anne of Cleves, there was talk of him marrying Maria of Portugal, & she was Eleanor's daughter! (Mary I was going to marry Maria's half-brother Luis of Portugal at the same time.)

Is there anything in Anne's writings that mentions how she reacted or what she said about King Henry VIII calling her ugly? Surely she had something to say about that and she had plenty of time to say it, even after his death. Or maybe her siblings wrote something about that?

I'm not sure she (or they) ever knew about his comments, but she did say when he married Catherine Parr that she (Anne) was more attractive than CP.

Btw, I once owned a small book of Henry's love poems to Anne Boleyn. He knew how to use words to elicit love! Unbelievably romantic. To think he most certainly wrote the same or similar to other wives before divorcing or having them beheaded 😒 and similar words to his mistresses. It is no wonder AB still believed he was misled about her committing adultery and incest and that if she could only speak with him he would believe her, as he must surely still love her after such prose (I completely disbelieve she committed adultery let alone incest. I am convinced it was that he wanted out of the marriage and manipulated others to accuse her and elicit so called 'confessions').

Hence the stony resolute response at Anne's adulterous revelation and the wailing and gnashing of teeth at the 'indiscretions' of his Rose Without a Thorn, little Kitty Howard.

@@itsmainelyyou5541 If Catherine Howard did commit adultery (rather than false allegations) then I can't say I blame her. A lot of women and girls were given no choice as to who to marry, as poor Jane Grey wasn't. Ambitious families imposing unwanted cruel, dirty old men on teenagers and young women only in their early twenties. For all the privileges such as decent food every day, a roof over their heads, they luxurious clothes, lack of physically hard work, jewels etc (which could be removed in an instant). I bet a fair few of them would have swapped lives with not too impoverished peasants if they could have, and the lives of peasants were not easy but at least they weren't usually forced into unwanted unions with old, physically dirty psychopaths. Mind, the last bit - I think a lot of them only bathed once a year whether they needed it or not.
