In this video, we share places in New Orleans that were important to Anne Rice's life and work, including her most famous novel, Interview with the Vampire. From an innocuous, working-class Catholic childhood in New Orleans's Garden District and Irish Channel, Anne went on to become a household name, with dozens of novels to her name, plus a trail of restored mansions, more than one upcoming TV series, and one of the most devoted (and strikingly dressed) fandoms in the world. Here we'll share houses she owned and renovated, how her struggle with addiction informed her work, her feud with the founder of Popeyes Fried Chicken, her legacy in New Orleans today, and her final resting place.
Special thanks this time to the incredibly friendly folks at the Garden District Book Shop and Chicory House Coffee!

It’s strange to realize there will be no more books or stories of any of her series, particularly the Vampire Chronicles. I have read the vampire series since middle school and I’m 42 years old. The world she created is unlike any other. Even when you consider masterpieces like Lord of the Rings, there is hardly a comparison. The breadth of work, the amount of years the books were released, I have few memories of not being immersed in the fantasy she created. She was a genius and a legend.

She was such a generous person. I took her picture at the Orpheus ball. I sent her two copies of the photographs. She graciously signed both copies and sent them back to me. When I didn’t make the lottery for her book signing at comic con, I explained it to her. She ask which books I wanted signed…she actually signed two yard copies of her books and sent them to m. I cherish them.

Thank you for mentioning the Anne Rice Vampire ball. It’s the original New Orleans vampire ball. It’s also the only event of its kind Anne hosted herself at times, attended, and gave her blessing to.

Speaking as a fan of the Vampire Chronicles, thanks very much for this local documentary on Anne Rice. Her books are quite captivating, partially because she had such a talent for interweaving the New Orleans environment into the dialog. Too bad she did not complete her plan for Cafe Lestat in the French Quarter; it would have achieved cult status by now!

In 92 I attended a party at her house in the Garden District that she threw for the literary festival - great NOLA restaurants had set up food stands in the massive garden and jazz bands playing. It was the best party I've ever been to in my life. And the house was magnificent, although spooky as I'd recently read The Witching Hour, and that house was the setting.

I worked in television in the 90's and we filmed some of the scenes of a failed Anne Rice series (Rag & Bone) in Lafayette Cemetery. The highlight was the night that she came to visit the set. I'd almost swear she glowed during that visit. Also enjoyed working out of St. Elizabeth's and seeing some of her husband's art on the walls.

@@TheCantolope I never saw it, although I've heard that it was aired as a made for tv movie, but haven't been able to find more than a clip or two on KZfaq. The premise was a New Orleans cop (Dean Cain) that partnered up with the ghost of a 50's cop (Robert Patrick) to solve cases.

Anne Rice was the reason I came to New Orleans for the first time back in 1999. My brother and I drove down from New York City. I've been back many times since, most recently this past April for French Quarter fest. She's an amazing author who came from an amazing city. I would say anyone out there with even a passing interest in her writing or her city should dive in and experience them.

Anne's cousin Billy Murphy who led the tours said that Garden District folks didn't like Anne because she worked for her money rather than having inherited it. They clearly missed the point that all old money was new money at one point. It also spends the same.

Oh man, I remember back in the height of the vampire culture in New Orleans there was this asshole “vampire” who forcefully bit a woman he didn’t know. Surprise surprise! She called the police. In a statement given at his arrest the “vampire” tried to excuse his behavior by saying that he was LARPing Vampire: The Masquerade! After that hit the news VtM’s punisher at the time, White Wolf, started putting a disclaimer in all their RPG source books that went something like this: “No, you’re not a (vampire/werewolf/Mage/Changeling)! This is a game! If you can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality, put the book down.” It was at once both hilarious and frustrating to those of us in the RPG community.

Wonderfully done. I don't know how you spew all those facts without cue cards lol. I can barely get a sentence together these days. "Interview" is the only book other than "The Exorcist" that, upon publication, I started reading it and I literally read it without putting it down, it was that enthralling. Oddly, I never had any interest in reading any of her other works because " Interview" was so perfect to me that I didn't want to possibly spoil it's effect on me. Anyway, Andrew.. you are so so good at what you do and, please forgive me, so darn adorable.

She used to go to Community coffee across from the A&P on magazine st every morning when I was in High School. She was polite and always gave an autograph when asked. Andrew is the best! Now that you mentioned it, my first time in New Orleans was in 1989 and I don’t remember vampires, just Voodoo. In the mid 1990s was when I remembered seeing vampires in the French Quarter. Who knows what was going on around those times, I was young and only there to party. It wasn’t till I was older that I started to appreciate New Orleans for its history! Now even those live oak trees fascinate me. The architecture and the history are like nothing else in the world. Thank you Andrew for another video. I’ve come a long way from throwing down with the best of them, carrying on and acting ugly at Rawhide2010! Lol

Thank you for this. I had the pleasure of visiting NOLA in 2000 & absolutely fell in love with the city. My husband was there for a work conference & I just spent my days walking around & talking with the local shop owners, Street Artists & street people. Everyone was very friendly & since it was the end of Oct the spooky vibe was definitely there even though we left before Halloween. The tours we took were amazing & Anne Rice still had a strong presence there ( I think we were taken to an actual vampire bar briefly but I never found it again afterwards & cannot remember the name. I don't think the patrons were people in costume 🤫) I haven't been back post Katrina, too afraid it wouldn't be the same. That week I spent in NOLA is probably my favorite trip/vacation & stands out in my mind. We stayed at The Orleans in the French Quarter. The neighborhood felt so "Old World" compared to the average California suburban city/town. Was so heartbroken when Katrina happened.

Wow! Great vid! I did the vampire thing in NO for Halloween back in the 90's. Even then the costuming was over the top! Sadly, I won't be there this year but friends will be, so I'll steer them your way. I loved, loved, loved the vampire books but I wish you would have given at least a nod to her early erotica novels. That's some smoky stuff...

I genuinely love the vampire cafe and the boutique- i went to go see the cure in New Orleans and i ended up spending around an hour in there talking to the person working there about the concert, goth culture, and vampire culture/history. The cafe was also really nice- i highly recommend all of the teas and the doberge cake, lamb meatballs, shrimp, and avocado toast! We also went to the tea bar they opened recently to meet a psychic and got our tarot cards and tea leaves read there. I highly recommend

Her vampire novels took a weird Atlantean turn in the later novels that involved the lost city of Atlantis, some crystal waving aliens and their artificial human like simulacrum, one of whom turned out to be the “spirit” that created and empowered vampires in the first place. It was trippy.

Ohhhh, the memories - you went everywhere I've been and talked about the things that drew me there. Of course I moved there after the movie came out. I loved the cool mystery and despair of the painted lady. I kinda miss it - the people I met and befriended - I do miss. I did get a chance to go to the Vampire's Ball at the Orphanage... Anyway, I did move there for vampire lore but stayed for the witches and voudou...

I'm glad you included St-Alphonsus. The way Micheal Curry talked about it in The Witching Hour was great reading. There's a really interesting interlude about Storyville in The Witching Hour as well, with Julien visiting one of the brothels. I also like the way La Victoire plantation (Riverbend) was described when Marie-Claudette brought the Mayfair's from Saint-Domingue to Lousiana, it makes it seem like it was a real place (but even if it were real, in the book, it was swallowed up by the Mississippi, though the house on First Street apparently has murals of the plantation).
