Honestly, I avoided this show for a while because I heard it wasn't faithful to the book when season 1 came out but then I heard that while it strays from the book quite a bit, it's faithful to the spirit of the book. I recently checked it out and it's a really great show that made a lot of great additions. Matthew calling Anne his daughter is one of my favorite additions. I also love how this show isn't afraid to display how things were unfair for other marginalized groups like black people, Indigenous people, LGBTQ+ people, and others. While the original story didn't shy away from things like elitism, classism, and sexism (Though not to the extent of this series) it didn't cover other issues due to the time period that the original book was written in and was more light-hearted. So this is a fresh retelling that shows that making a good product isn't always about being completely faithful to the source material. I do feel like there are times when Anne has to suffer unnecessarily (Like her treatment in school, being called an ugly orphan and a dog, any time she has to deal with Billy Andrews, etc.) but that kind of goes with the tone. I'm in the middle of season 3 and I know I am gonna be so pissed when I get to the end because of how it didn't get renewed for a season 4. I'm always going to prefer the original book and the Meagan Follows mini-series but this is definitely one of the best versions of Anne of Green Gables.
