THE DOGO ARGENTINO DOG - DANGEROUS & BANNED?

The Dogo Argentino is a brave hunting and guardian breed, but his back history in dog fighting genetics has him banned from several countries across the world, accused of being extremely dangerous to humans. I fly out to Italy in order to meet some, as the Dogo is banned in my home country, England. I want to discover for myself if he is in fact dangerous, or just another poor dog breed used as scape goats for governments who cannot enforce proper legislation for responsible dog ownership.
During my reseach of the Dogo Arentino, I did not find one death in the UK at the hands of a Dogo Argentino. I do believe they should return to the UK, but responsible dog ownership be enforced across ALL DOG BREEDS so that the breeds are not singled out; instead poor ownership and abuse by humans is targeted instead.

That’s because everyone says all dog breeds are the same and anyone can own any dog and that is not true alot of people aren’t up to a high drive guardian breed not too mention alot of dogs are simply not built to be in an urban environment my dogo would be a perfect example as would pittbulls. So it’s a two for some dogs are in the wrong hands but a lot of people are wrongly telling them there’s no truth to any warning about a breed that facilitates it.

I am a retired dog trainer and I have a 4-year-old Dogo who looks very much like the one in this video. I have had mostly Dobermans, German Shepards, and Pit Bull-type dogs throughout my life. This is my first Dogo and he is one of the best dogs I have ever had the privilege to own. He is smart, obedient, calm, and very tolerant of people and other animals including dogs. I would not recommend them for everyone just due to their size and strength. My dog Dexter has never shown any unwarranted aggression toward humans or animals but if needed he will very quickly shut down any kind of confrontation. He absolutely loves children and seeks their attention whenever possible. Even though he is huge he is very gentle with kids and never gets too rowdy. I walk him nearly every evening and many people in the neighborhood know him and look forward to seeing him. I don't think any breed should be banned because every dog is an individual and should not be judged by the actions of others of the same breed. I also believe you must be responsible for your dog and his behavior. These kinds of dogs require a lot of time and attention to keep them and the public safe so unless you are willing to make that commitment get a cat instead.

Is there a manual on how they need to be trained? I would like for the dog not to take food from others and not to eat found food. I also want him to walk beside me and not to attack, but to attack on command. My father had a German Sheppard that he took from the police as a puppy and they gave him a training manual with it
@bigjimmy6690
@bigjimmy6690 Жыл бұрын
@Mariana Iantchouleva You will need a lot more than a manual for that. This is a dog, not a refrigerator, my friend. You need a professional trainer qualified to do the kind of training you are seeking. This kind of training requires lots of dedication, time, and money to do properly. Before you can even think about any kind of protection training, your dog will need to be completely obedience trained and able to work off lead. Please seek a highly qualified trainer with good references and have a serious discussion about all that's involved in taking on this kind of responsibility. Best wishes.

People confuse dog aggression and strange dog aggression. If you look into the history of pitbulls they would go in the pit kill a dog and when they got home play with the family yorkie. There's a difference between all dog aggression vs strange dog aggression and dogo argentinos can have strange dog aggression easily while hunting in a pack no problem.

I lived in Rio and my housemate had this dog. It was very kind but extremely powerful, I had never seen such a strong athletic dog like that, it once jumped up to “kiss me” and accidentally smashed into my face and pretty much knocked me out, I came to and was terrified, I thought I had lost my eye, the dog felt so bad and was licking me but I was traumatised. They are so powerful if you can’t control a dog like this DON’T get one as it’s basically a giant pitbull. So if it were out of control it could be extremely lethal but they are a kind hearted breed.

It is said that one of the main causes of the extinction of the "perro de pelea cordobes"(Cordovan fighting dog) was the ferocity of the breed, because when it came to bringing a male and a female together to procreate, it was very common for one of the two to end up dead. since almost always there was a fight between the two. That breed was very complicated to breed, because it was created more than anything to participate in the dog fighting circuits, something that unfortunately was very common in those times. The Dogo Argentino has some of his genes, but it is a more docile and easygoing breed, although obviously everything depends on the way it is raised by the owner.

Dogos are dominant, strong willed and stubborn. I have owned 3 dogos and one of them have been very agressive towards me as the owner. Growling and trying to be the dominant one. @@samuraiedge2619 Yes, and when they hunt they have a commun goal (catching the hog) so they are less likely to fight each other when they have a commun goal to in mind. However, when they are not hunting they focus that drive into fighting for dominance. That being said even when hunting they often end up killing each other. If you ask Dogo Argentino hunters you will find out it's not rare for them to loose dog over a fight while hunting. Very domimant and strong willed. Fun fact: my family always owned terriers. We started with a female Airedale (bought from a reputable breeder who sadly passed away a few years ago) and then kept one of her puppies. She was alright with most dogs. Her pup (male) grew up to be very dog aggressive with other males and occasionally females as well. All his siblings, save for one of his sisters who was also dog aggressive, behaved just fine with other dogs. Years after both Airedales passed away, we adopted a rescued bull terrier. Despite his previous life of abuse and neglect, he gave my family zero problems and even managed to get beat up by a Maltese. Banning races is useless. What we need is competent dog breeding and better training for both the pets and, most importantly, their humans.

I had one 20 years ago before it became popular and then banned in several countries, I had one from the work line, was very balanced and obedient, never shown sign of aggression to people.. I think most of the problems come when people decide to have it as first dog or with not enough experience, by then I had 4 dogs and the dog before was a Rottweiler..

I think some countries banning them are for the good. I saw a video of kangals tied up in London, malnourished and tied up by crappy owners. Kangals are not gladiators but protectors. Imagine if it was a dogo, it'd be highly dangerous. Dogos on the other hand are too much. They need exercise, a strong owner (cuz love ain't gonna make a good dog), obedience training. And an owner who understands the dog. Like someone who will respect it as a catch dog not a show dog. People who thinks that to raised a dog, all you need is love and care, are people who has never raised a dog.

Great Comment! We own a male Dogo Argentino and he is a great responsibility. Regardless wether you have a powerful breed or not dog ownership is a big commitment and lots of knowledge. Considering most pedigree dogs cost several thousand to buy (plus equipment etc) if you want to own one, even a tiny toy dog then some basic training to acquire a license would be an excellent idea both for the owners and especially the dogs themselves.

the problem with dogs that are aggressive to other dogs is that if they attack another dog while out on walks and the dogs owner tries to go in between they will attack the owner, so unless the aggressiveness is bred out they are still dangerous Edit: that being said I don't think they should be banned, instead there should be a dog owners license to ensure that dogs that are hard to handle only go to people who can handle them

Aggressive on walks? I have 2 dogos, a male and a female. The dogo is protective. We have absolutely no problem with bigger dog breeds as we cross paths. The problems occur with the little breed dogs… Personally I blame the owners. They think it’s “cute” their little dog tries to act tough. I’ve literally been on walks.. having these little dogs not only aggressively bark- but lunge. Unpopular opinion… if I allowed my dog to do that to you and your dog on your walk- I would have animal services at my door the next day. Yes you can’t train some of the instincts out of the breed…. But it’s always about owners and training.

Sorry, but Anneka doesn’t take a very strong, hard look at all of the issues in these types of videos. Her take always seems to be: All dogs are the same and all dogs are sooooo cute! It’s overly simplified. When my first dog died of old age I looked at adopting from several breed specific rescues (collie, border collie, husky, shepherds, etc.). They all warned that their breeds had ingrained behaviors (like herding) and physical traits that couldn’t be trained out of them by the best, most loving, most well-intentioned owners. But somehow, when it comes to breeds like this that are hugely powerful, come from dog fighting backgrounds and are physical threats to the safety of other dogs and people, supporters always say it’s the owner and not the breed that determine behavior. I bet all of these people praising the dogo as the best dogs when raised by the “right” person also think chihuahuas are crazy dogs that no “right” person can fix. Very few people should own dogos and other breeds like this even if they’re “good” owners. These dogs are too powerful and clearly have too many ingrained behaviors that make them a threat to other people and other dogs. Yeah, of course they’re going to love their families-it’s OTHERS that are at risk.

I've been a volunteer in a dog shelter for 5 years and I have to admit that not all dogs are the same. The dogo has the animal aggression and drive of a pitbull in a bigger package. They are also extremely strong. Off course you get softer specimens but I wouldn't recommend them to most dog people

You are right. If a greyhound kills the neighbours cat that jumped the fence, a jack russell kills the kids hamster, huskies try to escape etc , it's 'genetics' but when a bully breed attacks another dog it's 'all how they are raised' ... I love the bully breeds and molossers but you cannot deny their ancestry. Breeding for show or companionship is great but ancient instincts sometimes pop up.

The problem with powerful and aggressive breeds like this is that most people just don't know how to handle them, or they are purposefully reckless, and that can lead to tragedy. With hunting and terror dogs which have literally been bread to seek and destroy. Its a deadly combination. For the job the DA was bread for perfect, but for vast majority of dog owners its an accident waiting to happen. Not because of the dog but the lack of knowledge and understanding of owners that will put them in vulnerable situations. Anika handled these dogs beautifully and I really do admire them, however most people are not equipt to own one. I have one neutered male and can say, that's bullshit! He goes every monday to dogschool for playtime and even the smallest dogs could dance on his nose, if they would like to. His social skills with other dogs are just super nice. Stubborn? Yes. But dominant and unpredictable? No! If any dog shows aggression or desinterest, he goes away and avoids trouble. Such breeds are very sensible and humans can do lot of mistakes in training, if they have no clue of dog behaviour. I would highly recommend the visit of a good dog trainer or dog school. What to you seem as unpredictable, was said by the dog multiple times in his dog language before. When slight signals were ignored or false interpreted, the dog will say it more emphatic. That's the point where the dog seems suddenly, out of the blue, agressive or unpredictable. You can't judge the dog for human failure. Please do your research before forming an opinion, otherwise please keep it to yourself!

Anneka thank you very much for sharing this very interesting video! I agree with you that this fantastic breed needs to be reintroduced in the UK. There are no bad dogs but bad owners!! This is a wonderful breed very intelligent and very powerful and therefore it needs owners who are able to understand these characteristics. Very compliments Anneka 👍👍👍👏👏👏🔥🥰

The dogo shown in the thumbnail looks very overdone for an Argentino. The ones from their native country are leaner and more athletic looking.

Did u get ears done or flop..they do look scary with ears cut which puts people on guard but for better protection dont it makes people really uncomfortable unsure so they think twice before they do anything.. my corso very protective of me and my son more so my son... and dogs teach each other my lab taught the corso about seizures alerts my 23 yr has its amazing but I cant risk in public because he might attack thinking is hurting him..it really strange gets over protecting during that than seeing a physical fight.. ps train verbal & hand signals.. the hand signals could save your life!

One of my neighbors had one and never trained it. It was sad he never knew any better. Just left outside to guard the yard. Sadly every time the dog got out of its owners hands he would attack the nearest dog it could find. Eventually killing another dog and had to be put down :(

I don’t know we had a Rottweiler on our street and it never hurt a soul even though it was trained to protect. He could be off leash and still stay where the owner told him too. The Dogo argentino (different owner) on the other hand killed a little dog that was not even a threat to his property or on his property.

My mate has one in England. It’s deaf and was gonna get the needle as a pup but he rescued it. The police came to see him, someone called them, the dog handler inspected him, declared him ok and gave my mate a letter stating so, it’s supposed to always be on a lead and muzzled in public. It’s a good dog but very protective of his wife, it’s bitten a couple of people who’ve walked too close, and being deaf it’s best not to approach from behind. He follows hand signals. Personally I wouldn’t trust it as far as I could throw it. But another mate had a Kangol and that was just plain dangerous, it wanted to kill me the day he brought it home at 8 weeks, the Dogo is much calmer

I have my third dogo argentino today, its for me a complete dog, useful for so many things. I live in an apartment, that works very well, but you cant be lazy, these dogs need exercise and work, both for the brain and body. I take my dog with me everywhere i go. They are also crazy loyal, and dont like to be left in others hands. No problems if you have other animals in your home, the dog learns early what is prey or not. But, this breed isent for the first-time dog owner, you have to know dogs first. They are smart and learn fast, even the bad things if you aren't careful.

I have a Doggo, love him to death. Definitely not the right dog for everyone. Despite training throughout my Doggo's life, he became highly protective when I had my baby. It was almost like a switch. I couldn't take my baby to the dog park with him and had to be very careful with friends over + while walking with the carriage. He has mellowed down a lot (my daughter is four now), but that guard instinct is deeply embedded in them. At the same time, he is a cuddly bear around my kids and my daughter treats him like her own personal hoarse & he loves it 🤣

I love learning about various breeds on your show. But if a dog was created for the purpose of fighting I don’t see how you can have that as a house dog and say it’s friendly. It’s like training a wolf 🐺 not to howl at the moon. It’s just in them to behave a certain way

The dogo argentino was not created to fight! Are you listen the video? Is a "catch dog", a hunter dog but at the same time a guard and family dog. In Argentina every child can control a DA, aparently the europeans don't have the temperament to do that....

Friend of mine has one of these in the uk, it was a rescue that his son picked up as a young dog (less than a year old mostly spend chained up on a balcony) but was quickly passed onto my friend because his sons flat was too small for such a large dog. he loves to run so get walked with a quad bike a couple times a day to keep him calm, they also have a female pit (advertised as a mix but 100% not) bought as a puppy to socialise the male, she is an absolute angel and can run rings around the the dogo. he was supposed to be an American bulldog according to the original owners (no doubt a deliberate lie) but as he grew it was evident that was not the breed as he was the wrong shape and temperament. He is food aggressive and as mentioned not fond of other/new dogs or strangers on the property, on the few occasions he has escaped he has barked at workmen and strangers outside the house but he has not attacke. He will bark at strangers at home but will reluctantly come when called to heel only occasionally needing to be physically removed to calm him down. I dare say the potential is there to cause injury but Tbh I've known far more aggressive "safe" breeds. He has bitten his sons girlfriend dog (they came to visit and let it off its lead before anyone knew they had it with them) and will bite the female pit and Jack Russell if there is food around not a full on bite but a nip to assert dominance, the pit although not aggressive will now that she is full grown defend herself which has actually calmed there male down around food. He is very loving and playful but like in the video of he doesn't want to do something he can be very stubborn.
