Gold medalists. I really like this FD, and I feel for them that they dropped behind Usova & Zhulin at Europeans. Somehow they got a 5.0 from the American judge for this for artistic impression!

Thanks so much for posting this! This program is one of my all-time favorites--and I am (still) so sad that they missed the worlds that season... If I recall correctly, Natalia had acute hepatitis right before the worlds??? As for the 5.0, I am sure the rationale involved the ISU recommendation circa 1986 or so that ice dancing should be more like ballroom dancing and less like ballet.

You are welcome! Thanks for the info - I like this program so much and it is a shame they weren't at worlds that year to finally earn themselves a medal

Have you seen their performance of this programme at the 1989 Europeans in Birmingham? I just found it on Figure Skating Videos.

Hi. Yes! I think I have a VHS of the CBC coverage with Toller Cranston. I would have thought he'd LOVE this piece, but he wasn't all that excited. You know how Toller used to be absolutely IN LOVE with this couple--especially when they did their Romeo & Juliet in 1987. It was interesting to see, though, that he had already moved onto loving Usova & Zhulin by the Euros in 1989...

@@nondescriptnyc I think you're probably right about the reason for the 5.0. I actually think ballet suited this couple more than ballroom, this FD and their Romeo & Juliet FD were their best ones IMO and this programme contained a lot of original and beautiful moves. Natalia really reminds me of Natalia Bestemianova with her hairstyle and fiery persona here!

I love your analysis! Up to this point, Natalia had been either cute-whimsical and/or pure-innocent in her portrayal and, to me, this program was a breakthrough in that she showed intensity-passion I had not seen from her before. As you said, this is what we were used to seeing from Bestemianova!
