Lyrics
How many times do I have to try to tell you
That I'm sorry for the things I've done
But when I start to try to tell you
That's when you have to tell me
Hey... this kind of trouble's only just begun
I tell myself too many times
Why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut
That's why it hurts so bad to hear the words
That keep on falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Tell me
Why
Why
I may be mad
I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you're thinking
And I've heard it said too many times
That you'd be better off
Besides
Why can't you see this boat is sinking
(This boat is sinking, this boat is sinking)
Let's go down to the water's edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out turning inside out
Tell me
Why
Tell me
Why
This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I'll never tread
These are the dreams I'll dream instead
This is the joy that's seldom spread
These are the tears
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread
These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel?
'Cause I don't think you know how I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
You don't know what I feel

This song is about a crumbling relationship and how you deal with changes in your life, but it's so much more than that, IMO. Beyond the sad melody and aching vocals, Annie talks covers the 5 stages of grief: denial ("Some things are better left unsaid"), anger ("Why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut"), bargaining ("Let's go down to the water's edge And we can cast away those doubts), depression ("This is the book I never read, These are the words I never said"), acceptance ("You don't know what I feel"), to culminate with a single word in the chorus: "Why?". If this isn't a masterpiece to you, then tell me what is.

Just watched a documentary on Annie Lennox and how she along with Dave Stewart struggled for years for success. She was banned from MTV and ridiculed for her short hair, accused of being a cross dresser, etc. A real story of perseverance. What an artist and just listen to those pipes. A gift for us. Thanks Annie and Dave.

This song reminds me of when I was getting ready for my husband's funeral. I looked terrible when I stepped out of the shower after not eating or sleeping for 2 days so I began applying my makeup, trying my best to look alive & put together. and I got a flash in my mind of the artist simultaneously applying makeup to his face, doing the same for him.

I had an obsessed delusional relationship with a woman in a drug treatment center. She was physically abused by an ex before entering the center, addicted to fentanyl and meth. She was smart and had a great career before getting with him, but lost it all. I had owned a restaurant, and I felt she was my soulmate. I scared her away, and all because I took her kindness too far. I ruined something that was really special, all because of early feelings in recovery, as well as a manic episode. I'm writing a book on my experiences, and I hope to one day publish it so people can see addicts are everyday people. Some of us have it harder than others.

That soundslikea man with a plan bravo. Just remember punctuation and tempo of all you see and do becuasr it will be reviewed then your life will be decided on thru every other person that has one. It's a real blessing or a lesson dependingon the criticism of who and what you are. Sad part is that life or trauma or reaction to life as you write it may not be you anymore at all. Wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors

My husband of 27 years is addicted to tranq. Makes me cry and get angry. He's been on this rollercoaster for 20 years off and on. I love him so much is my best friend.. it's affecting my mental health. One of the best people you'd ever meet. Doesn't look like a addict. It's tearing my heart apart and am about to give up and just accept that this is going to take him. All his attempts and can't beat it. I'm losing hope in him. There's nothing I can do to ease that pain and it tears me apart

I hear and watch this video and cant help going through an ocean of emotions. I remember thenfirst time i watched this video back in early 90s and it was just incredible to see how loaded with artistry and poetry and all the beautiful lyrics. It brings me back to that moment when i would run to the tv to turn up the volume when this video happened to be on. Its a video that makes u take a pause and admire so many elements. That level of artistry i think its lost today. Compare this jewel to the music videos of today sexually charged that is all about drugs or violence or pornography. Im so thankful to have been born and be on this earth at same time any lenox is. Her amazing music just transformed my life.

This music video demonstrates the power of nuance and intimacy-Annie does relatively little yet remains so compelling to watch. Particularly at a time when some music videos were becoming massive productions worth millions of dollars with extensive choreography, expensive sets and wardrobes, and more. How much this video conveys with so little! And then there's the song itself, a breath of fresh air after the Eurythmics years-when we were able to see more of the person behind the performance...

This song will always remind me of when my mum told me she had alzheimer's. I was first one in family she told. We had a tricky relationship, she kicked me out of home when I was 17 for fighting my older brother. I was 30 when she told me, and said I was only one who wouldn't judge her. My dad died when I was 14. My mother remarried. When I got back home to my flat I cried my eyes out. This song came on the radio when I was in her car and will always remind me of that day. I was 30. She has since passed away in 2018 when I was 40. The alzheimer's didn't kill her she had another illness a hole in her stomach. It was for best as at the end it got really bad she forgot everything. Thought she was 17 and still in Scotland where she was from. She left when she was 18 to do her dancing in London. I miss her so much but I'm glad she has peace. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease love to anyone who has to deal with it in their family. Try to face it with a smile. My mum fort it bravely and always could smile. Peace people love x oh yeah just before she went completely I gave her a granddaughter I can't express the comfort that gave both of us xxxx

In November 2007 Annie Lennox was interviewed extensively by Malcolm Bragg when she said that "Why" which was her first solo release was a personal song related to her going solo; she wasn't sure she could write songs by herself or where she was going in music or her life. It's also looking at the aftermath of relationships, disappointment and the personal battles you have gone through. Great song and video......

I'm in my 40s, I love my family with all my heart. I work every hour of the day for them. When I am home I don't say much. I'm normally tired out from work, I don't mean to be distant, I work so hard to protect them, that I really don't have anything more to give. I love them so very much, my life is their happiness. My point is, your quiet and distant Dad, was probably a Dad so tired out from doing his very best to love and protect you. Take care.

It's not until I've gotten older that I've learned to really appreciate the depth and beauty in her music...Tina Turner as well. When you get to a certain age, especially if you're a woman, the songs go far beyond just "Oh that song is so beautiful, but I can't really relate to it completely". You start to actually SEE yourself in her...You know EXACTLY what she's feeling, being a woman of a "certain" age, you have experienced the same things yourself...Heartbreak, pain, disillusionment, joy, sorrow, that point in time when even love itself changes from this frantic, emotional roller coaster full of intense highs and dramatic lows, to instead a mighty, steady stream...Maybe it's because you are now older and life itself is no longer "new" and you've been down this road a time or two, but for the first time you know EXACTLY what she's talking about, in a way you never understood before...I didn't realize the difference when I heard this song at 15, as compared to being middle age...Now I understand..For the first time, I TRULY understand.

I love this song and video for so many reasons. Annie is just pure elegance and grace; she puts everything into her performances. What I adore about this song is how it depicts the emotions of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, with an eventual endeavour to move on from a lost love. The imagery of putting on her make up, dress and headwear, adds to the ‘mask’ we all attempt to wear when confronted with our lost love to conceal the pain of the void they’ve left. We want to show no sign of weakness, regret or struggle, yet inside, if they are who we truly love, it hurts to the point of no easy comfort. This is a masterpiece of a song and video. Bravo.
