"Es führt über den Main" is a German folk song that belongs to the so-called death dances or "danses macabres". The roots of the dances of death lie in the Middle Ages, where they were very popular. They should represent the power of death over people's lives. No matter who you were and how poor or rich, no one can escape death. Everyone has to follow him over the bridge to the afterlife.
Lyrics: Felicitas Kukuck
Instrumental parts: composed by Annie Hurdy Gurdy
This track is part of my acoustic EP 'NOSTALGIA'!

Similar to the French "Sur le pont d`Avignon" the song tells about a stone bridge above the German river Main. And everyone who sets foot on it, instantly starts dancing, has to dance, without ending. Children, adults, barefoot beggar boys or the king himself, even horses, everyone, no difference. People try to destroy the bridge, but even they start dancing. And the others pledge to not destroy it, because they all love to dance so much. Likely a distant reminder.of on of the dancing mania phenomenons taking place in Central europe between the 14th and 17th century. Read the wikipedia article, very interesting!

@Paul Allen Brother, I also suffer from depressive tendencies sometimes, but what I recognized is: it’s often a lack of identity. A couple of years ago I started looking back in to my family history. And it turns out I’m more or less half Thuringian, half Saxon. So I started reading books about these cultures, and listen to music that’s at least close to these cultures. And even if it wasn’t „my music“ at the beginning, it startet the production of some hormones in my body. In a positive way of course. So think letting these informations in your body is something like waking up your inner tribe genetics, which were sleeping a couple of hundred years. Even if it’s just close to the Germanic language family it still makes something with me and my heart. Keep searching, Bruder! 💪

I'm from Poland and the German language has always sounded unpleasant to me. You removed this evil charm with this one song. I don't know why, but every time I hear it I see a sunny spring day - lush green meadows, blooming flowers and rays of sunlight passing through the green leaves of the trees. I love it🥰🌿🌼

The German language isn't any harsher than languages like Russian, Arabic or Spanish which all also have a strong R sound and the guttural CH sound, yet those other ones are generally considered musical. The problem is the association with the Nazi regime and the fact that most people only hear German from actors in WWII movies. OF COURSE if you yell like a drill sergeant, NO language sounds kind or beautiful. Xd PS I'm German with a grandmother from East Prussia (now Poland, she suffered a lot of anguish having to leave the place that was her home), and what you said really touched me. All the best to you, internet stranger! And also if you would like to hear another soulful folk song, check out 'O du schoener Rosengarten' (Oh beautiful rose garden). I think you will enjoy it. :)

For those who don't speak German, I think I might have found a translation. It leads over the Main A bridge of stone Who ever wishes to cross, Must spin in a dance A teamster comes by, loaded up heavily He has three steeds And they dance across A lad without shoes And in rags to boot As he saw the bridge, ei, how he danced there If a girl comes alone, on the bridge of stone, She'll grab her little skirt with haste And she'll dance like the wind. And the king himself, Climbs down from his throne, He hardly steps on the board, Before he starts dancing a minuet. Dear people come here, Break the bridge in two And they swung the hatchets, And the danced all the while And the people in the country Come running in a hurry Stay away from the bridge Because we love to dance

As a 3rd generation American i wish i was allowed to learn my German heritage, my mother wasnt allowed and our names arent even our family name anymore all do the events of the 40s. Had to hide in the US, they didnt trust us here so my family buried our name our culture, our language and our history. My great grand pa left after the night of long knifes. He told the story of seeing people happy in the street but all he was another power mad lunatic. When he got here with his family things where full blown his kids had his name. My family faced consent mistrust and questioning untill my grand ma was told to never speak german nor use her last name. My mother was the last to have it but also got mistreated so now my name isnt hers. She had me named differently but i inherited my great grand pa green eyes that his son my grand pa has. Seems some things cant ever be hidden.
