Annual RyeGrass seeding grow in pots with pure sand using some different fertilizers and such. I had annual ryegrass germination in 3 days in pure sand, nice and thick by day 9. I really care about how they do over the next 30-60 days putting in roots. To me, that is the fun part of this type experiment.

In California I just threw down some 70/30 compost. Threw some annual rye grass seeds. Raked it in and watered. 2 week's later thick beautiful lawn. Then overseed with tall fescue. Once I see the fescue grow I'll cut the lawn at 4 inches, then reduce to 3 inches. I'm in early March at mid 30's to low 60's and all is looking pretty good. It's grass it will grow, even where you don't want it.

lm in southern Kansas. Put in annual rye 85annual/15% perinial. Sprouts in 4 days! I just moved into a new house that has a neglected lawn. A trailer was parked over this spot, and killed everything. Raked it all out, put down seed. No starter fertilizer. It's coming in nicely. Just to have something greenish over the winter, and not a mudhole. The area is in the shade till around 4 o clock. I'll see how it goes. I may be a rye grass fan. Redoing , tilling, and seeding next spring.

Would annual rye be something to use for quick temporary ground cover? I have a few bare spots in my lawn I would like to cover up before a party. I'm planning to redo my grass next year just need something to cover unsightly bare brown dirt patches.

I am in NW Florida. When i bought my house it was originally sodded with centipede. I have drainage problems and installed some french drains. During our recent down pours everything washed out before I could get sod back down. Due to lack of availability I had to cover the wash out with St. Augustine. What will take over more? I have already raised the height of my mower to accommodate the St. Augustine. But would rather have the centipede take over unless St. Augustine is more dominant and take over quickly. I am also considering leveling some some spots and putting rye seed in to help retain soil as some parts are still washing out.

I overseed my Bermuda with perennial rye every year. Personally, I have not seen any ill effects from it. As long as you kill it off, proper in Spring, the Bermuda will do its thing and be fine.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Good feedback. I often hear conflicting opinions on this with bermuda. Either way, I just can't overseed mine. My Christmas display just wouldn't look right on a green lawn. A dormant brown one is the only way for me.
@littlefinkle7757
@littlefinkle7757 4 жыл бұрын
So are you just spraying glyphosate on it before Bermuda greens up to kill out the rye?
@andrewp.619
@andrewp.619 4 жыл бұрын
little Finkle, no sir. I use either Monument or Certainty with a surfactant to “burn” it out. It won’t harm the Bermuda. You actually don’t want to kill off the rye(force transition) until the Bermuda has started to green up a bit. Usually for my area, that is about May, even as early as April 1st, depending on weather.

I planted annual rye in a spot that a trailer sat over, and killed everything. Just raked it out, threw down seed, lightkybrsked dirt over it,and watered. It sprouted in 4 days! After 1 week it's coming in! The area only gets sun from around 3 or 4 till 715 when sun goes down. Has rained 4 times in that week, and I watered the other days for a short time over my lunch. My front yard gets heavy shade. If this works then I'm planting perinial rye.

This is first video of yours I’ve seen. Thank you, it was useful. Very entertaining, but not detailed enough for me. I would have liked some clearer criteria and results in the experiment. E.g., density per sq. foot, colour test at a glance, cost analysis, work analysis and comparison. This would allow a lawner to make a more scientifically-informed decision. I hope you don’t get upset with me for making a suggestion. Have you thought about catching grass clippings and delivering to local goat enthusiasts? God is only One. I bear witness, and I hope you get the qur’an as soon as possible and read it so you can save yourself from Hell. Help Florida return to calm weather and welfare: believe and feed livestock while you go lawning, you don’t have to give it up just serve God with it if you can. I’ve watched the second vid but not seen any root analysis yet. After helping my kids and neighbours heal with raw goats milk, I can’t turn back. I hope you get the goat bug and can build some nice goat herd in the community. Perhaps the goats can have a weekly meetup at someone’s place and you can spread the goat poo with a rake, some bark mulch, and a fermentation inoculant. It is exactly what grass loves.
