Another municipal drain plugged up by a beaver dam. The current was pretty strong on this one. I almost went for a ride a couple times.

yes, the most important river filters for removing sediment and pollution are full of junk--that's a major reason why beavers are so important and why removing their dams is insanity pushed by ignorance. There are few good reasons to remove beaver dams and lots of bad ones.

How long did it run this fast and rapid for? This was a great dam removal and a very dangerous one as well. Glad you were safe and you didn't fall and get swept away. The amount of water that went through there is crazy. When you first started you could barely see your canoe by the end it looked like your canoe was on an angle that the bottom of the boat was in the water barely and the top of it was sticking up. Great job Gene looking forward to the next one!

Great question, L. Faraday. I believe you are the first to ask that. The township usually will let men know if I should drain it slow. I can flood roads, homes & highways if I am not careful. I always check on Google Earth before heading out as well. I get a pretty good idea from that. Also, I always start at the furthest blockage downstream. I hope to get a drone soon. This will help with that as well. Thanks for watching.

Do you install beaver deceivers, where you want to maintain the pond or lake but control its depth? Depth of cut is more important than the width of breech. Start with a narrow cut, as the cut gets deeper the easier it will be to remove material from the sides of the cut to make the breach wider and the cut deeper.
@geneplumley4136
@geneplumley4136 Жыл бұрын
Great question. I don't actually install those. I frequent many private properties where the goal is to keep the water but stop the beavers from getting out of control and flooding trails. For that I use selective trapping. I usually take one or two per house depending on how heavy of beaver activity I see. It maintains the wet lands and keeps the water levels consistent. All of the dams you see me pulling are in municipal drains alongside roads and farm fields. Thanks for the tip. I have to open the dam wide for the town. I find it easier to do with the help of the running water. I am competing with escavators for the job so I have to produce similar results. I start wide so all that material does not wide up blocked further down stream. I send lots as it is. Thanks for watching.
@rustyiron
@rustyiron Жыл бұрын
@@geneplumley4136 The first step in success is removing the sticks from the front of the dam, you do an excellent job with that. I have used limb loppers, branch pruners, to cut sticks that I could not pull out of a dam, while it weakens the dam, it increases the risk of a sudden dam collapse. Depending on conditions I have cleared the stream and stream banks of shrubs and debris a long way downstream of the dam before working on the dam itself. Starting close to the middle of the dam and working towards the banks made it easier for me to pull material from the dam and throw it onto the bank in one motion. Keeping the cut deeper in the centre than at the edges helps. It is fortunate that not every dam can be reached by heavy equipment and there are alot of people who are afraid of a bit dirt and getting sweaty.
