@Fries KD, Kyrie, Curry, Embiid, Ja ect, and back in the days Kobe and Iverson, 2 of the most overated players ever because they had « swagg ». Even MJ is overated because of it, a lot of people think Lebron or Kareem aren’t close to MJ because they aren’t as elegant and flashy as him, but the stats, record and accolades are proof that they are close or even better (Bron).

Would love to watch the aesthetically pleasing bias deep dive. I love a shifty handle, but sometimes it’s easy to forget other aspects of the game- especially when those ‘un-aesthetically pleasing’ players never get love on social media due to them not having the craftiest highlight. Guys like Kawhi and Giannis are dominant in their own element, but rarely does the media ever put out their playoff historic mixtapes; they’d much rather post a Kyrie or Crawford mixtape. Again, nothing wrong with watching smooth handles (those are some of my favorites to watch)- but it becomes a problem when people start ranking players based on their aesthetic appeal and acting as if it’s a skill that should automatically make that player rank higher.

Look into an article by Jason Holt, called the tale of two tigers. It's about Homogenization and hyper athleticism in sport. Essentially it is saying that as fans and to an extent coaches and scouts, want our athletes to look and play a certain way. That's why we find them "aesthetically pleasing" because they fit the "perfect mold" but some people fit that mold. If it doesn't fit the mold we look at it like it should be fixed. But when we try to fix the perceived issue with an athletes skill( in this case thier handles) we run the risk of ruining what is already working.
@Anthonydu01630
@Anthonydu01630 Жыл бұрын
True but Kawhi is aesthetically pleasing, Kawhi is the closest thing to MJ you can find in this era with Derozan, Kawhi has a very smooth jumper/fadeaway like MJ, his handles aren’t flashy but just like MJ, he can control the ball extremely well with his big hands and waste no move, and he can also dunk like MJ just without the crazy hangtime. Kawhi isn’t Kyrie, but to say he isn’t aesthetically pleasing isn’t true, same for Giannis, how many 7ft guys can handle the ball like him, make crossover, hezi, dribbles between the legs and dunk on people like elastic man ? Except KD there is no 7footer on planet earth with betted handles so i don’t understand why people say that, maybe 3-4 years ago it was true, but now Giannis can look very smooth sometimes.
@ld5768
@ld5768 Жыл бұрын
@@Anthonydu01630 All throughout Kawhi’s career we often hear how “stiff” he is. People were berating Giannis because he can only “run and dunk”. People may be opening up more now, but that doesn’t erase the fact that people don’t find those two visually appealing due to dumb reasons. Personally, I love their games; they’re two of my favorite players in the history of the game, and all of those critiques about them aren’t even true. But, because they don’t have shifty handles like Kyrie, they don’t get mixtapes from media attention- that was the point I was trying to make. I agree with all of your points, but unfortunately, others don’t.

That’s really unfair to say, it’s not like Kyrie didn’t do anything with LeBron, in his first finals he played like he was a seasoned vet and would’ve definitely been enough to beat the warriors in 2015, 2016 as great as LeBron’s historic run was he still needed Kyrie and Vice Versa is was as close as Superman and Batman we got since Shaq and Kobe in a very satisfying and great way, even in 2017 those 2 where insanely good and complemented each other so well as ball dominant duos go, if KD didn’t come to save the warriors then the Cavs led by LeBron and Kyrie would’ve definitely had their number, any time Dame had even a chance to shine and come out on top he choked like against the warriors when they lost KD, dame really blew 4 4th quarter leads in a sweep against the warriors. It’s not a bad thing to need a certain team and player to win considering many NBA superstars and all time greats benefited because of a team and stats around them.

5:19 I’m putting Gobert here too. Gobert isn’t actually as bad on offense as people think he is, in fact, he’s extremely important. He’s had the highest FG% in the league multiple times, with this season averaging 15, his shot quality is amazing, he’s a lob threat, he’s an amazing offensive rebounder, and he sets some of the best screens (Mike Conley and Donovan have insane pull up jumper statistics because of how well Gobert screens). Yes, he has no post game and his individual offense isn’t close to good, but he does do the dirty work and the best teamplay offense at probably one of the best in the league for a center. Not saying I think he shouldn’t get a hook shot or post game, obviously that would be nice but there’s so much more to offense than people think

Ball handling doesn’t have that much value. As long as you have a good enough handle to get your shot, you’re fine. Like I don’t like, when people use their checkboxes to see which player is better in use ballhandling, as like a full point, That’s like half a point

Yea Dame in 2021 led the Blazers to the playoffs, they lost in the 1st round to the Nuggets. 2020 they were in the bubble and got in thru the play-in & lost to the Lakers in 5 in the 1st round. 2019 Dame led the Blazers to the conference finals. 2018 they lost to the Pels in the 1st round as a higher seed, they may have missed the offs in 2017 i can't remember, in 2016 the Clippers lost Blake & CP3 & the Blazers beat them in the first round, they lost in round 2 to GS, 2015 i think they lost to HOU in the 1st round.....and back in 2014 I think they made it to the 2nd round he hit the GW series shot vs the Rockets, lost in 5 in the 2nd round.

Dame and Kyrie are certainly both cold as ice. But they're actually kind of polar opposites when it comes to their approach to team relationships. Point being, Dame is loyal to a fault where he simply allows things to fall apart around him instead of demanding others pick up the slack that he cannot. And Kyrie is agitable to the point where there is no pleasing him. I don't even blame him for the Nets thing, and I even think his move to the Celtics was ballsy and warranted, but he had a GOOD thing in Cleveland and he left it. He had a GOOD thing in Boston and he left it. He currently has a GOOD thing in Brooklyn and he's, allegedly, disrespecting his coach and trying to leave it. So yeah, Kyrie has a ring. Kyrie is a first option all star player. Kyrie is definitely not perfect. He's not better than Dame, either. They're both, pretty much, similar enough.

Look into Homogenization and hyper-athletisicm in sport. We perceive that something that looks like what we expect it to look like as better. We expect good handles to look like kyries, so we perceive him as better, but there are people that are operating thier handles at an equivalent level, but don't look the way we think they should. We see the same problem with quarterbacks and thier throwing motion, or in basketball mostly with the shooting motion.

The Cavs w/ Dame obviously wouldn’t have won in 2017 or 2018 BUT, they would have won in 2015 (as well as 2016) because Dame before the last year or so has been incredibly durable (unlike Kyrie) so the Cavs with dame on 2015 would have obviously won Dame on a skill level isn’t better than Kyrie, but While some guys have that IT factor that makes them better than they should be-Kyrie has the opposite, he has that Anti factor that makes him far less valuable and far less good than he should be, Dame>Kyrie

@@titankiller5287 Dame has struggled against the Warriors every single time they’ve matched up in the playoffs. It is highly unlikely he’d replicate what Kyrie did in 2016. It's simple Kyrie fan boys can't get over the way he looks on the court. These type of fans overuse the term bag to justify their bias when it's the most subjective thing in basketball. Dame is better than Kyrie and if he had a prime LeBron on his team his playoff runs would look different and his numbers would be more efficient. Kyrie has played with LeBron, KD , Harden , Tatum,. Brown, better teams ,. Coaches and hasn't done anything aside from LeBron but get gaslighted by many people from media members and former players

@Fries I think so but tbh if we are going off the criteria that a superstar is a player who can be the first option on a championship team you could easily argue that Dame might not fit that description and Kyrie doesn't but if we are saying a superstar is someone that is able to consistently change the momentum of the game then both would have to fit that description too

Nothing. Handles? Lmao but that has nothing to do with having superstar credibility and Dame doesn’t even lack handles so yeah nothing. Kyrie played with LeBron James. That’s why he’s looked at so highly. His success came off the safety blanket that was having LeBron James as a teammate. Give Dame Bron back in 2016, 17, 18 etc. and that’s at least 2 rings.

I know this was years ago at this point but the 2017 Celtics had a shot to at least reach the Finals with Kyrie as technically the best player on that squad. Sticking with the Superstar Criteria of being the best player on a championship squad, at the bare minimum Kyrie has remained on the borderline of star and superstar since he got into the league. The only thing holding him back has been his availability in my opinion not his on court performance. I stay Steph, Kyrie, then Dame.. as much as I do love Dame and consider him a HOF type player, he doesn’t have a generational or transcendent trait to his game the same way Steph and Kyrie do.
