OH MY GOODNESS! I am a 72 year old woman. Right now I am going through a very stressful time and I was flipping through channels the other night, couldn't sleep, and I found the two of you! I was awake untill 4:00 AM! So much FUN! Amber you are so innocent and refreshing! You are such a perfect couple, thoughtful and kind to each other. Your reactions to the music, I grew up with made me laugh, I guess, I take the past intertainers for granted and you make me see them in a whole new light. Your girls are adorable and I can't wait to see the baby! Thank you, for the memories, the smiles, the reminder that tomorrow will be better, life is good, and for sharing yourselves with me. God bless.

"Blue Suede Shoes" is a cover of a song originally written and recorded by Carl Perkins, who was a label mate at Sun Records with Elvis Presley, and they were good friends. Here is an interesting story. When Sun Records was about to release "Blue Suede Shoes" as a single, Carl Perkins got into a bad automobile accident, and was hospitalized for his injuries. When Elvis Presley was making his series of TV appearances on "The Stage Show" on CBS, Presley was facing pressure by RCA Records to perform his version of "Blues Suede Shoes" on television first. Elvis Presley refused to perform the song on the program as a matter of principle, until Carl Perkins recuperated from his injuries, and was able to perform the song on television himself. Presley kept his word, and after Perkins performed the song on television, Presley finally performed the song himself on television also.

Little known fact: Carl's original recording of his song 'Blue Suede Shoes' charted higher than Elvis' version! But Elvis good looks, dance moves, and overall charisma made the song the launching point of a much bigger career. Carl, who was a perfect gentleman, always admitted that he had a wife and kids and didn't have Elvis good looks and described himself as having a voice like a pail of gravel - so he was never going to be Elvis Presley. But Carl was delighted to say that royalties from Elvis' recording bought him a lot of Cadillacs over the years. Carl was also an excellent guitarist and was a pioneer of the rockabilly sound.

Not a song by Elvis, but 2 songs about Elvis that you might want to preview. 1) Walking In Memphis by Marc Cohn. This one is very blues with INCREDIBLE piano sounds. 2) Black Velvet by Alannah Myles. This one is damn sultry rock. The title is in relation to the fact that back in the day you could always find pictures of Elvis done in a black velvet style of painting. Great job guys!

Check out "Bossa Nova Baby". He gets down on this one. To your question, the reason why you mostly don't hear a #2 is really because there was no #2, or 3, or 4, or 5. Elvis left many way behind. Now there were many imitators, Rick Nelson, Fabian, Gene Vincent, etc. Lastly, the "Iconic" look was actually right there, early in 1956 as Elvis appeared nationwide. Elvis made that look his and popular ever since.

It would be interesting for you to watch an interview with Elvis and you could see what a kind, respectful young man he was. His mamma and daddy raised him right. Things went off the rails a bit later, but to be fair, no one else had ever done the superstar before. Elvis was pretty much the first one that was absolutely recognized and mobbed everywhere he went, surrounded by people that weren't honest with him, isolated with that group of people, etc. But he pretty much always remained the respectful country boy.

Now that you've heard this iconic tune and been introduced to Rockabilly at the same time you should consider *"Guitar Man"* it's also a happy song... Three contemporaries: Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens. And when their plane crashed on February 3rd 1959 it saddened the world so much that that day became known as "The Day The Music Died", and yes, that's what made Don McLean write *"American Pie"* Thanks S.W.

Back then as far as I'm concerned there was Elvis and then there was everyone else. And today there is Elvis and then there is everything else. But he started in suits and regular clothes in the 50s then after that it was many years of movies and few concerts but by 69 70 the jumpsuits and bling came. His extra weight came very near the end. RIP. I saw him at the Fairground arena in 1970. One of the biggest highlights of my life

People talked about him ordering 3 banana splits and then going to the bathroom to throw up. I think Elvis life got pretty sad toward the end. He was spiraling out of control on the pills and the lifestyle.

And I'd add to any list, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran. In fact Gene was considered a rival, but after a motorcycle accident he was physically limited and hence could never be the performer that Elvis was.

I'd also add that the weight did come on late in life, and was due to medical problems--I can't remember the specifics, but my doctor treated Elvis in his later years and told me this. No doubt diet and drugs also contributed, but apparently it was largely related to health problems.

Elvis starred in a whole series of simple movies where he plays a surfer or a race car driver and they all had musical breaks where all the characters will dance while Elvis sings the new song written for the movie or sometimes covered from another artist. The dance sequences are very family friendly.

There were other rockabilly artists -- Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent -- but I don't think Elvis had any serious competition in this period. Maybe Buddy Holly came closest.

Roy Orbison was the better singer, Elvis even said it and when he was called the king of Rock by a journalist he quickly told them off as said no that's Fats Domino. My dad always preferred Buddy to Elvis though he loved them both.

It was once said Buddy Holly was the only singer that Elvis was concerned about because Buddy Holly could write his own music and he was not what you call the best looking guy more of a nerd look but he could write some damn good songs
@blackkat563

@@ronaldackerman7383 why would Elvis be concerned about Buddy Holly? All he can do is write songs and can't singer like Elvis. Elvis was all at one a Baritone, tenor and bass. He could sing anything. Elvis was the whole package. As Carl Perkins said once, " Elvis had everything. He had the looks, the moves, the manager, and the talent. And he didn't look like Mr. Ed, like a lot of us did, Elvis was hitting them with sideburns, flashy clothes, and no ring on the finger. I had three kids."

The fact that you're sharing with your children and now they are gaining interest is simply beautiful... I LOVE you guys!!! Also, a good kid friendly song with dancing: "Bossa Nova Baby", from the movie Fun in Acapulco, or "C'mon Everybody", from the movie Viva Las Vegas.

Elvis started it all. Then all of a sudden bands and artists were coming from everywhere. And his great legacy was to inspire future performers to continue keep it going. He we are 60 odd years later and the music is still popular. And so much of today's younger generation discovering him and other artists.

Another rock and roll pioneer, who unfortunately died in 1959, was Buddy Holly. He wrote and performed songs that other artists still sing today and that were hugely popular in the '50s and '60. "Shortly afterward, Buddy recorded several demo tapes for Norman Petty. Under his aegis, Buddy and the rockabilly group known as The Crickets recorded "That'll Be the Day," which zoomed to the Billboard No. 1 spot. Two solo hits for Buddy soon followed: "Peggy Sue" and "Rave On." Between 1957 and ’58, Buddy produced seven Top 40 Hits. Critics identified his jangling guitar and brand of rock as Tex-Mex. "Oh Boy," “Maybe Baby," "It's So Easy," "Think it Over," “Everyday,” “Words of Love,” “Not Fade Away" and "True Love Ways" are still heard today. Linda Ronstadt, Mickey Gilley, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles have all recorded Holly's songs. Paul McCartney has acknowledged Holly’s innovative style and immense versatility as a great influence in his own creative output."

I've not seen you react to Buddy Holly yet, considering he was only recording for a couple of years before his tragic death his output and influence was phenomenal. Tracks like That'll Be The Day, Rave On, Everyday, True Love Ways, Peggy Sue, Not Fade Away, Oh Boy, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Raining In My Heart and a few others are all classics. I've got his greatest hits album, 20 tracks and 17 or 18 of them are instantly recognisable to people of my generation who were born after he died.
