www.homebuildingandrepairs.com Click on this link for more helpful videos about stair building, new home construction and architectural building design. This video will provide you with another method that can be used to provide you with step-by-step instructions to calculate the length of the stairway, along with the riser height and tread length for stairs built on a sloping hillside. Keep in mind that the construction methods and math formulas used in this video could provide you with a set of stairs that might need to be modified, during the design phase and not during the building phase.

This approach strikes me as quite a bit more efficient, elegant and clever than the multiple stake approach you provided previously. Two stakes at each end (one plumb), a third to support a level piece, a level piece, a level, a square and a measuring tape to determine total hypotenuse, and with that total rise and run, and from that we can easily play with number of steps, and rise/run for each step. This rocks. Thanks.

Great video. I am just a little puzzled on how you came up with the riser height. I understand how the formula calculated the tread depth. Can you please explain how you figured out the riser height?

Can you provide me with more details about what you're having a problem with? For example are you having a problem figuring out the individual riser height or the overall rise. I would suggest going to the website for more information. www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/stairs/index.html

"The general rule (in the US) is 7-11 (a 7 inch rise and 11 inch run) (17.78cm-27.94cm). More exactly, no more than 7 3/4 inches (19.7cm) for the riser (vertical) and a minimum of 10 inches (25.4cm) for the tread (horizontal or step)." The approach Greg provides here allows us to easily pick our rise and run within this larger context of the rules that make for a comfortable stairway.

Add a landing or two mid-hill to achieve optimal rise/run with minimal excavation.

Need your advice. I have 50'x50' backyard with steep slope at 30 degrees. What is the best to built a stair? Thanks

30° is almost perfect for a stairway and you can use almost any materials to build it, concrete, steel or wood. You can even use landscaping materials. Her

Question ....... how did you go from the answer = 23.72" to a final decision to use 22.5" treads length? Looking at video I would think where you show the right angle simply align the 7.5" (if that is what I want for riser) to the vertical side of framing square and see where the downhill side of string crosses the framing square ruler on the horizontal ruler. Looks like your video shows this as correct. Can you confirm my understanding? Quite confused me showing the 379.5/16=23.72 and then pulling 22.5" without even mentioning that is from your framing square ruler. Fantastic video if I understand the framing square use correctly?? Simply set the vertical rise desired and read the horizontal side. So is the 16-20 just a way to determine # of steps??

I'm having a difficult time figuring out what you're asking. I do have more videos at our website that will provide more information about layout and calculations.

My distance was 468 inches and when i did the square measurment it went 7 inches up and 18 over. So i divided 468 by 26 steps to get 18. From what i got i will have 26 steps with a rise of 7 inches and a tread of 18 inches.

Just double check your measurements before and while you're building.

What if you had a slight curve to your stairs? Like the center of the line was offset in the center by 2-3 feet. Do you just add a step in?

Yes, you can create an angled landing. Check with local building codes to see if you're allowed to add angled step, that might not work.

Great video. Would you be able to elaborate on the exact same design but raising the stairs high enough to not have to dig into any hill? In other words..the stairs do not touch any ground all the way down. Thanks ASAP.

I suppose it would start with a small raised platform. These are being built on a small hill to the lake. The length you have in the video is fairly close to what we will be doing. We will start with a raised “just off the ground” platform and then down to the lake, keeping above the ground the entire time.

Yes, frame one out of wood or other materials that can be used to build the stairway above ground.

So, I've watched both videos.. don't think either mentioned whether one should start excavation n the layering of blocks at the TOP of hill or BOTTOM.. you might say doesn't matter if you're a pro, but as a novice DIY'r is one approach (top vs bottom) slightly easier that the other? Going to start this today as a surprise for the hubby.. lol Thank you

Very awkward to go down steps that have a tread depth 22.5 inches. A person will come down to the tread and take two steps before going down to the next tread. With 16 steps there should be a landing a third of the way down from the top of the hill. There is a reason why building codes exist for steps in most parts of the country.
@stairbuilding

Yes, long steps might be allowed by building codes, but might not be comfortable to use.
