Wet markets selling live animals have been branded dangerous by the World Health Organization. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
But across Asia - crowded wet markets are very much open for business.
Yesterday, the conservationist Jane Goodall told Channel 4 News about her fears about human interference with animals.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Jonathan Miller has been secretly filming inside South East Asia's biggest live animal market in the heart of Bangkok - which one Thai newspaper says is "another Wuhan in the making".
A warning, there are distressing scenes in his report.

there's no reason people couldn't buy those wild animals if they're still alive and return them to the wild but the point is they're wild animals, western practices have strict hygiene and codes of practice and the animals are not wild except in Zoo's, the two don't mix well do they, so they would not exist unless processed into food, leather etc and some species only survive in Zoo's. Veal I agree is wrong and personally i won't touch Lamb either. People can either afford to be cruel or can't afford not to be but eating infant animals imo is past where the line is drawn, the extremes need to be dealt with wherever they are otherwise one day Nature will just tear us to pieces and put humanity down as a wrong turn.

This clip gonna confuse viewers outside of Bangkok. Klongtoey market is a wet market but live animals sold there are mostly poultry (No live dogs for food sold there). That part of Jatujak market is a PET market (not a wet market); live animals (and some of those exotic animals) sold there are for pet not food and most of them are legal. Yes there are very few shops selling endangered wild life but rarely and illegally; so they mostly did it under the closed door.

I have lived here all my life, and I have NEVER seen any monkeys nor dogs being sold for food! And EVERY country is filled with bad places, but there is always great places, stop putting your anger against people that live here and have great hearts. Also YOU ARE being racist if you say this race is full of racist since you are catering EVERYONE in that race. Now it is NOT IDEAL to have animals in cages all day BUT it is changing, just stop being RACIST to the MILLIONS of people in Thailand that have good hearts! This happens EVERYWHERE and not just in Thailand, and you can not judge something from a video. I am strongly against the animal trade but instead of being rude against this speak with kindness even if you don't think things are right. Saying things like this does not help.

Because we Thai people don’t eat random things okay 👌 and we love animal as pets not food and I don’t understand why foreign television just like to make my country look so bad And their country are so good like look "we are the good people” and like to make it look really bad than the reality is (in this case it is really bad but they want to make it worse and make people in their country believe it)

Next go to a pig farm and ask if it's the next epicenter of H1N1. Then go talk to a poultry farmer and bark the query whether hers/his is another avian influenza birthplace in the making. Heck, go to the Congo forest and ask the trees whether another Ebola outbreak is brewing. While it's repulsive what's going on with wildlife trade, the declaration, "it is places like *this* that the next pandemic could start" carries that activist undertone that's an immediate turnoff. Damn colonials.

@@Atlas_21 In Thailand, it is illegal to butcher and consume dog meat, cat meat, bat meat, and any other meats considered wild animals and pets. Also, eating wild animal meats and kept-as-pet animals are generally considered taboo and are unacceptable. As for exotic pets, it is a worldwide problem that has been happening not just in Thailand. You can search on KZfaq and can come up with thousands of videos showing people keeping wild animals as pets, and these people do not live in Thailand. So, no Thai people do NOT eat wild animals sold at Jatujak Market. THE UNITED STATES ALSO CATS, DOGS, AND BATS 9 Countries That Eat Cats and Dogs April 11, 2014 By Serusha Govender In some parts of the world eating fluffy cats and dogs is considered perfectly acceptable… and delicious! Eating cats and dogs is not only extremely popular in Taiwan but there is a prolific underground trade supplying strays to local restaurants and meat vendors across the country. The meat is usually added to other, more conventional meat dishes for added flavor. For the record, the government has passed legislation banning the practice, but it still persists and is very popular, particularly in smaller towns and villages. The United States Yes, even in some parts of the U.S. you’ll find people that are completely okay with eating puppies. There’ve been reports aplenty, in particular, across Hawaii about people eating stray cats and dogs for years. There are also plenty of pets that are kidnapped for human consumption. An eight-year-old Labrador named Caddy was recently dog-napped from an equipment shack at a golf course (where his owner left him while he was teeing off) by local landscape workers who butchered and ate him. Hawaii’s house committee recently tried to pass a bill banning the eating of cats and on the island, but it was shelved because there was too little concrete, legislative evidence of the practice (meaning that while it does happen a lot, not everyone goes to jail for it so there aren’t formal records). It takes the American “hot dog” to a whole new level, no? We’re familiar with the idea of huskies pulling sled teams through the furious snow drifts of the Poles. The harsh weather conditions make it the sort of place where certain winter dog breeds thrive and humans couldn’t really get by without them. Yet, when the going gets particularly tough, the tough get going… all the way to the soup pot. Historically, dogs have been used as an emergency food source in parts of Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland for centuries, so it’s really a tried and tested formula. Hot Rod's BBQ is a family-owned restaurant in Lutz, Fla., that serves a variety of smoked and grilled items - including fruit bat. Dave Lyle, 30, has worked at Hot Rod's since they opened over 15 years ago.

Wet Markets are a cultural issue. Asking them to close would be like asking America to close baseball. The people need to be educated. This education must be mandatory. Afterward, all wet markets must be strictly regulated and inspected. Those that are not compliant with wet market regulations will suffer punitive action and closed on a case by case basis.

Hi people, how are you ? Report it if you know anything of mistreatment of animalsto the police, on the internet or in person. It doesn't matter what neighborhood, city or country you are in. This is cruelty and evil against defenseless animals that only give us love. This cannot go on. For me, this is the same as committing crimes and cruelties against children. See if the products have the cruelty free seon. It doesn't matter if they are companies, industries or biotery. -

There is absolutely no difference between a factory processing beef, sheep, goats, chicken, turkey and seafood in the same warehouse/facility in the West. These countries have been practicing these methods for decades. In fact theirs are the real sence of organic foods. These animals are not subjected to chemicals used to preserve its meats in the west, where freshness never be guaranteed. One cannot simply have fish or chicken any fresher than what they serve and sell in these countries. If we want to point fingers, perhaps we need to look at laboratories in China not these peasant farmers in Thailand or Africa that have be doing this for centuries. The truth about this virus will eventually come out, and I guarantee it is not going to be from these markets.

Misleading information! That section of Chatuchak Market is pet market. They are not sold to be eaten. As for separate clips of wet markets (not Chatuchak market), wet markets have been there forever long before the presence of supermarkets and that is very common in asia. It's like fresh food market. Mainly you will find pork, beef, lamb, chicken, fish, and seafood. At certain places, you might find something exotic like snakes and mices, but it's not widely eaten or common. However, it is nothing like Wuhan wild life market.
