@Chuck B I think it’s pretty clear based on the context of the question I was answering that I was talking about abortion being legalised etc - I think obviously fathers won’t have no say at all but at the end of the day if it’s the woman’s body then it’s her decision. A quick 10 second answer obviously can’t cover different nuances or extreme scenarios like ‘if women are forced against their will’ (though I’m not sure how common this is), but I am definitely pro choice. I just don’t feel that men should play major roles in creating laws and policy-making surrounding abortion.

What? That's horrible. People learn a whole damn language they dont need just to communicate to them, and they dont like intrusions? Oh wow lol.
@nijapyrosphere4145
@nijapyrosphere4145 3 жыл бұрын
@@LL-wu5ui Sorry for a VERY late reply to this, but I had to comment on this matter. (My opinion is the same as OP as a deaf person myself, so please keep that in mind) If you look into the Deaf community history and the whole evolution of Deaf culture specifically (also, yes, deafness has its own culture, which often sets it apart from the rest of the disabled community), some are extremely protective of the idea that we don't need to be in the hearing world to engage with life. This was instigated by the segregation of the Deaf community by many in society for many years. Many people don't know this, but laws regarding sending Deaf people to asylums in many countries were only repealed in the late '90s and early-ish 2000s. For example, in America, this law allowed individuals to send Deaf people to asylums (because they were deaf) was only repealed in 2003. Okay, that's America, but what about the UK. Well, for example, BSL was only recognised as a language by the UK government in 2003 (2003 is a huge year for Deaf rights globally, it seems from what I can find); however, to this day, it has not been given legal protection as most spoken recognised languages (although this is covered-ish with disability laws). Essentially, what it all boils down to is an "Us vs Them" mentality. This is very ingrained with individuals who have spent their entire lives being Deaf and have had to adjust how they go about their entire day with their hearing level. But as a result, Deaf culture is surprisingly vibrant. Sign language is arguably some of the most emotive languages of all, and there are so many different quirks to sign language that is so integrated into the community, that I highly recommend learning it. This mentality is why you might hear how people getting cochlear implants are referred to as "traitors" by some of the Deaf community, as those people might view it as saying that being Deaf is a direct hindrance to experiencing life. It's also why you might hear about people getting very defensive over sign language being taught by hearing folk. I personally love the idea of @Jack Edwards using sign language as I personally believe it should be taught in mainstream schools as a secondary language to everyone. Not only is it a good way to bridge that segregation to the Deaf community and make things far more accessible, but it's such an interesting language and, in a lot of cases, is faster than speaking. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~Just blabbing about the intricacies of sign language in this bit. Not essential to the rest of the comment~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Talking about the quirks of sign language earlier, I just want to point out some things you might not know if you are a non-sign user. Firstly, Sign Names. Sign Names are arguably the most "sacred" part of signing with a Deaf person SPECIFICALLY. This is because you are never (as decided by Deaf culture) allowed to gift yourself with your own Sign Name. Your sign name is decided by a Sign User (usually) by one who only communicates via sign language (though a fluent deaf signer may be equally valid depending on who you ask). A sign name comprises of the first letter of your first name and a trait that is both easily and personally identifiable. [A good film that displays this but in an old-fashioned way (in regards to gender and shit) is the Disney film "Amy".] Another cool quirk is that anyone can create a word (or, in this case - a sign) for something and for it to be recognised, and that sign is continuously optimised for speed. This essence of this can be dumbed down to two sentences: - Words are long. - Phrases are longer. We can create signs that encompass multiple words, or if there is a word that isn't in common circulation in sign language, we can simply create an action for that and we can use that to describe the thing (essentially an acronym but cooler as it is often more permanent if many people use it). If you look at that this deaf Overwatch fan, for example, (compete.kotaku.com/deaf-overwatch-league-fan-comes-up-with-custom-signs-fo-1826582964 - basically a dead game, I know, but that's the easiest available example I can provide); when words don't exist for a certain thing or the words are simply too long to keep up the pace, or a specific phrase has a specific meaning, we can just make a word up to fill in the gap and/or replace it. Moreover, you can often guess what signs are being said because many signs are based on objects' shape, the objects' actions, or a straightforward description of an object. For example, everyone instinctively knows the sign for a book. I don't even need to see your signing to know that you probably have put your hands together and opened them both up like a book to symbolise a book. Edits: They are literally because I cannot type it seems so I leave out words or I forget entire sections of sentences or paragraphs because why the fuck not?

Yeah that was a bit of a wtf moment for me, I was like “surely the more people talk about sign language and spread awareness of it the better, right?" It’s something I’ve looked into learning recently, especially with COVID-19 and masks making things worse for deaf/hard of hearing/people who lip read, but hearing those comments and seeing this discussion here about an "us vs them" mentality is hugely discouraging.

I think it’s just that there’s no proper resources for sign languages (like dictionaries for spoked languages) so you have to learn from people. So if a hearing person is teaching something wrong, people will learn it wrong. And for any language really, you’re best learning from a native speaker (or someone who is immersed with native speakers like if you have deaf family members)

It didnt scar me or affect my mentality but I was really shocked that a teacher could say that to a student. Now, as a teacher myself, I can understand that sometimes students can be challenging but it is my JOB to guide and support them not to degrade them whilst they are still developing.
