Answering the BIG Question! - Feeding & Talking Mini Styrofoam Mating Nucs

The California Beekeeper

Күн бұрын

Commercial Beekeeper and Queen Breeder, Jose Uribe, is joined by Max to feed roughly 500 mini styrofoam mating nucs. Jose discusses a few tips when running this equipment and also shares a flashback of the past 3 months on what we’ve been up to and why we haven’t been posting videos.
We have missed you guys and have read every text, email, private message, and comment. Thank you all so much for the love and support! We are doing well but struggled to manage both the channel and the increase in mini nucs, so we briefly had to put the channel on the back burner in order to breed our queens.
If you placed an order with us this year… thank you! We are passionate about what we do and are planning on making a big difference in the industry.
If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 12 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019, and launched our KZfaq channel in April of 2020. We specialize in queen breeding, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

I use my KZfaq blog for other reasons but there are times I need to simply quit posting to retain control , sounds silly but it’s designed to control its creators. Cash is king and that incentive of continual social media feedback is addictive.

@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Hey Ian, Kelly here... I feel the same.. we have to prioritize... obviously the kids come first for me. Maybe one day this will be a full time job but only time will tell. I will say- with as much work as editing is, I find the ability to be creative very fun! It has been interesting learning about the back end creator stuff. It's been challenging considering our identity morphing into becoming a "Creator". I definitely like the channel being a team effort with different roles between Jose and I... all while we are managing the bees too haha

@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I am liking not having to tie up resources to get some really nice queens mated. I had a bit of a learning curve on the beginning but thanks to your tips it has paid dividends for me. Everytime I turn around I am making up another nuc with a nice quality home raised queen ready to go to work for me. Running out of boxes here and time to manage them while working full time. I have been using cinnamon for over ten years when I see the ants around or in the hive. I spread it in areas the bees won't touch it because I don't know if it will hurt the bees. It messes up the navitgation of the ants and they cannot tell the other ants where the food is located. It really works and does not take much to do the job. I first tried it in my house the Ol Beehive Inn built back in 1883! Take care brother and I will See You on the Mountain!

I loved the end. Growing up in the business we always got a treat at the end of the day when we worked in the field. My favorite was milkshakes at a roadside cafe when we took the bees to alfalfa pollination in Nevada. It was back when they left the giant metal mixing cup still mostly full after pouring your shake. Max will remember these days.

You are so right Mike! Alot of time work and effort goes into doing KZfaq! I commend you for finding a good balance in what you do with your channel. What do you find the most challenging when it comes to creating content?
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper honestly it’s getting the shots. At the beginning I would just shoot willy, nilly, and then edit it all together and that was a huge challenge and confusing after the fact. But I learned to shoot the video in order so it’s easier to edit, but that now takes away from the actual work. Stopping and starting and narrating really adds a lot of time to the work that day. Then of course the time spent editing. It takes away from time interacting with family as I have to be locked in on the computer. But again, it’s easier now my shooting in order as best I can. So I try to shoot and edit a bunch of content so I always have two or three or even more , up on KZfaq at any given time. Then I can slow down the pace on shooting the video in the yard. But to do a seasonal step by step like last year? That was tough. It’s tough no matter how you do it...

IMHO feeding mini nucs with syrup is like an invite for robbing, especially in day time. I have "few" mini nucs close to big hives and no problem. You have to change your food for mini nucs. Greetings from Poland.
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. We rarely have issues with robbing but when we do see sign we immediately stop. How is keeping mini nucs in Poland like and what challenges have you encountered?
@ThEcLoUdBuStEr
@ThEcLoUdBuStEr 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I have alot hives close to my main apiary where I breed queens, so I have to make no mistakes, especially close to July because of robbing problem. I made my mini nuc by myself so they have few "tweaks" against robbing, but this is not enough. First of all, when I set up new one without comb, only with foundation, I put to the mini nuc only bee candy as a food (powder sugar + water + citric acid) + bees + virgin queen. Then I close the mini nuc for 4-5 days and then I open it. After that mini nuc is "integrated". When the queen start to lay eggs I can take her out and put queen cell or next virgin. The best queens for customers are when you let brood to hatch, older laying queen has more of pheromone and it is easier to successfully put her for customers into their hives after 24h in mail. I have build a machine to make powder sugar, but when they have comb and the nuc is integrated you can try to use just crystal sugar from store and put it to your feeder or buy candy from bee store. Also artificial insemination is very popular here, I think we have much, much more artificial inseminators than any EU country. Therefore there is alot queens from AI in productive hives - of course they are not like those form reproductive class. Repro queens are more expensive like 120 - 500 Euro for one queen.

KZfaq star ⭐️ Jason Chrisman told me to try Super Clean degreaser. I did and it works great. Whitens and removes most propolis. Put water in a 5 gallon bucket and mix in super clean. Soak the cloths.

I'm curious... I'm just getting started into beekeeping but I want to grow. Do you own all the property that you have all these different locations? Or are you setting them up on other peoples property?

Hi Ryan, we rent other people's properties. How many hives do you have now and what is your goal to grow to?

@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I'm going to be starting 5 hives in the spring. Hopefully get a few swarms as well. I'm gonna get the hives and equipment over this winter. My 5 year goal is to be between 75 and 100 hives. I'm also extremely interested in queen rearing. I would like to dabble with that my first year as well.....on a very small level of course. My friend is letting me use their land for the initial hives. But i will definitely need more locations. Any suggestions on how to find and approach people for that? What's reasonable to pay for land? I'm just giving my friend honey when it comes.

Do you keep your nukes close to your bees or do you just put them where you know there is bees

What month do you start producing queens. I start just after almonds but I noticed the northern cal queen producers don't start selling till may. Why wait so long?
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper 3 жыл бұрын
We start production mid-March but always depending on weather and drone stock. We run our production in Butte County, we are able to start earlier than some guys further North of us. Alot of larger commercial operations around us does the same as far as schedule. Where are you based out of? What type of nucs do you run or prefer?

I am in Tulare County and so far I am making small splits for my own increase in mid March that i put cells into and I have about 100 3 fram nukes that I harvest queens out of to fix my splits that didn't take. This is my third year making my own cells and it's been fun! I did a couple thousand this year. Your videos are encouraging!

What part of the country do you run bees in? If in California, (I'll give you a few factors)your bees are flying more with these temps and not bringing in enough to store, your queen is laying alot and bees are needing to feed larvae, bigger hive population eating more. What's your ratio? Try and make it thick 1:1
