Cat Breeding for Beginners

Күн бұрын

In this video I am taking a moment to answer a question I get asked all the time. It’s time to talk about stud cats and how you keep them. This is really important as it is an area that novice cat breeders often don’t have a lot of good advice or guidance about but it can be a huge deal to you and your cats.
This channel @catbreedingforbeginers was created to help answer the questions I get asked a lot as an experienced breeder and stud cats are a hot topic so I really needed to make this one!
It’s a quick chat but an important one. I hope you can learn a little bit about what to expect when you have a stud cat so you can be well prepared.
Remember to subscribe for more great videos about cat breeding and shows. Feel free to comment as I love to get feedback.

Thank you for being honest about having a stud cat , our family have a female and a male kitten from different breeders we were thinking of breeding the happy two kittens in time or maybe paying for a stud and then getting our male desexed then getting a stud for the female, after watching your video I’m more convinced now that our thoughts might be right because even though our kittens get along so well at such a young age of 4 months old I think in the near future we could be in for more than we bargained for and we don’t want that for the kittens and us in the house . So thank you you have saved not just us but our kittens a lot of future problems thank you . 🦋

THIS is the video I’ve been looking for! For some strange reason I haven’t been having a great deal of luck finding info on keeping intact male cats as pets, and this video gave me everything I needed to know. It’s no wonder nobody seems to talk about the logistics because of how deep they are, and instead, push neutering as the only option. I’m not seeking to breed cats, but I’ve always wanted an intact male because of how the testosterone alters their base appearance. The chubby cheeks the stocky muscular build, etc. Now that everything I feared has been confirmed, in the future if I do get a male cat, I’ll definitely be neutering him. I guess I didn’t realize how hardwired they were to chemically defend their territory compared to dogs. My last dog that recently passed never marked in the house, and he remained intact until he almost developed testicular cancer at the age of 12 and had to be neutered as a result. However, on walks he marked constantly, which is to be expected. Thank you so much for this video. I always do my best to make informed decisions before making significant life alterations, and this was exactly what I needed ❤️

Cats are not dogs lol. And the jowls that breeding males get will affect the look but in most breeds as judges we have to look past it as it is a negative not a positive. My breed has a chubby face but my desex males have it almost as much as my entires so it’s actually a bit of a lie that early desexing males leads to a smaller head shape. The testosterone makes them skinny, pissy and yowling. 🤣

Thank you very much for this video, it’s really important for people out there like me. I was hesitant about getting my cat castrated. I thought it was cruel. Because he is an indoor cat, has a very calm temperament and spends 90% of his time sleeping. I thought it wouldn’t be an issue for me. My wife was insistent but I outright refused until he got out the house for all of one minute picked up the scent of a local female, then spent the next 3 days refusing to eat, trying to get out of every window and door, and yowling the whole time. It was like a switch flicked in him, luckily he didn’t spray but I can now see that it would of only been a matter of time before he did. And that ultimately it’s cruel to keep him indoors and Intact if he won’t be used for breeding, as ultimately the hormones take over and turned him into something else, and not a pet like you said in the video. So I Took him to the vet, got him fixed and ate humble pie all the way home. It’s been a week now and he’s been basically back to him self after the first day, he doesn’t even seem to notice that his nuts are missing!

I had an un-neutered Ragdoll and have an un-neutered Siberian male that did/does not spray. I believe it has to do with the type of breed or just their individual personality. I've been lucky.

Apparently, it has much to do with genetics. My friend who is a breeder, would ask around and ensured to get a male from a breeder whos stud also did not spray and shes had this male for over 6 years now and he has not sprayed anywhere except for in his litter box.

To be honest with you, the strong urine smell in the litter box is intermittent. It has been over a month that his urine does not strongly smell. Maybe because I feed him raw cat food, the breed, "a Siberian" or just him. @@CatBreedingforBeginners

They do and it can lead to scalding of the genitals and skin around the area. They can also get them off and pee on things or mate the girls. And even if they stay on they are full of stud cat pee and stink. Maybe they work for some people but I would not get a stud cat and assume that is how you can keep him.

He has his own room that we tiled the floor but he comes out daily for several hours a few times a day in the house (carpeted) but with supervision lol he won’t spray in my presence usually. @@CatBreedingforBeginners thank you ☺️ yes he has access to them most of the time unless he is getting on their nerves too much lol He will harass my pregnant girls sometimes so I do separate him but they all are free to roam. Right now all girls are pregnant so he is having to be in his area more. I designated my master bedroom, large en-suite bathroom and large walk-in closet I converted into a room (that I use as his sleeping area). The master bedroom had 2 walk-ins. The walk-in has a gate so he can see everything going on when he has to take a break lol. Currently working to get drawings made so I can convert my large barn into a cattery and expand it to attach to my house as it’s only about 10feet away from the side of the walk-in closet. That will be used as the main cattery where they will be able to freely walk into the main house. Their current setup is about 1k sf. The barn is huge, it’s 16ft x 20ft so I’ll be excited to have everything combined f for them. I’m thinking to have the walk-in & master bedroom as the kitten room once that’s all done. Do you allow your males to interact freely with your pregnant girls? I’m still a new cattery so as a precaution I’ve been allowing him out with them but if he gets too rowdy I put him up.

So informative- thank you for taking the time to make this video. Question- Are stud cats less likely to spry if they live alone completely separate from any other cats? My male lives with my adult son in another city. So far no spraying (fingers crossed). He is 11 months old.
@CatBreedingforBeginners
@CatBreedingforBeginners Жыл бұрын
Yes but also no lol. They are influenced by other cats but it depends on the cat. I have a boy who never sprays, lives with another cat and near other boys and entire girls. Another boy I have in a pen on his own and he pees everywhere. You can cross your fingers and hope for the best but you may find he suddenly starts and that is a lot to manage suddenly. You need a back up plan.

Can a stud cat not be kept with multiple female's. If so, why is that? Context for my question: a friend of mine use to breed cats and they had stated they kept their stud with the females they wanted him to mate with and that they didn't have issues with it. Ik, one reason would be you can't decide or plan when you have kittens. I don't see any professional breeders doing this, their males are almost always kept in their own place and the females visit when they are in heat I was curious why that is.
@CatBreedingforBeginners
@CatBreedingforBeginners Жыл бұрын
The main reason is exactly that. Knowing the due date. But also in nature the girl will call, available males will coming into the area and mate with her then leave. It is not their nature to stick around so keeping them together can be stressful for the boys and the girls and they can fight or he will bother her. The other issue is cats can get pregnant over a period of time (and from multiple males). You don’t want a first kitten conceived one day then a last kitten conceived a week or more later. They only take 65 days to gestate. So the kitten born too early as that first kitten is ready will likely not make it.

They would be more comfortable but my house would be coated in pee and poop and scratched up. Multi cat households of breeding cats are stressful for cats. They bully and fight each other. And they wreck the place. It’s not sustainable. Anyone who says their stud cats don’t smell is lying or needs their nose checked. Ask your closest most honest friend if your cat smells like pee. I breed Balinese/Siamese, Persian and Himalayan. Keep my toms indoors but I’ve learnt a lot here! None of my males spray fortunately, no odd bathroom habits either. The one is terrible with his own kittens and hates them hahaha! The other is very good with his own kittens and co-parents them with his mated pair, I get two as kittens and let them bond and grow together and they become a mated bonded pair and breed naturally whenever when they are ready and this means that my females don’t meow for a suitor, they know they have one and simply go to their males when they are ready. My males don’t like to breed my other males females.. they don’t “cheat” on their designated females which is so sweet.. Meo always goes to his girl Mea.. However Mau has three sister wives he breeds between.. Moe and Mae are a mated pair and only ever go to eachother it’s very unique, everyone’s situation is soooo circumstantial. ♥️

Sorry but Nope! To begin with if your registering body heard that they would refuse to register your kittens. I am a registrar and if one of my members said that to me I would ask for DNA parentage test on each and every kitten youcats gave birth to. What you have described (and I am sorry if I offend you) is just really bad animal husbandry. Cats are not monogamous. Girls can be mated by more than one male. The reason you are not hearing your girls calling is because a male can and will mate them before they get to the point of calling loudly. I am assuming your cats are all the same or similar colours and all the kittens coming out are the same colour. You have a romantic view of breeding and I think the reality of what you are doing and how your cats feel about it is maybe not as sweet as you think it is. And let me share a story. A lady was breeding ragdolls and sphynx. She would tell anyone who would listen that her sphynx male was fine with her ragdoll females as he knew he was a different breed and not to mate them. The hairless gene is recessive. She sold a lot of breeding ragdolls. Down the track when her lines crossed back over hairless ragdolls started to appear in litters. It was the hairless gene passed on from her sphynx to the ragdolls coming full circle. Cats will mate freely if allowed. Anyway I have a feeling you have a set of ideas. I hope I have got you thinking and fingers crossed you make some changes but how you keep your cats is ultimately your choice.

That’s the equivalent of saying I can’t have a baby because there are children in foster care. Let me share a fact with you. My cats are all desexed before they are adopted. They go to people who want them so much they wait for about a year, maybe two. They pay a lot of money and that proves they can afford vet bills. The cat is one they want so they will keep it for it’s whole life. It will never end up in rescue. How is that not the perfect ownership model for a cat? Oh and I donate some of that money they pay to my local shelter to help cats in need. So……?

@@CatBreedingforBeginners I live in Metro Detroit where there's a lot of backyard breeders that breed poor quality animals, especially pitbulls. I've only bought one pet in my life. $30 kitten from a pet store in 1980. I hope cat breeders are more responsible than the dog breeders. People who show their animals are concerned about genetics and have a lot of skin in the game. Why are over 20% of shelter dogs pure breeds??? I've been an foster auntie to over 20 foster kids, so don't get me going on that topic.
