Welcome to Part 2 of my Ask Me Anything vlog!
To follow on from last week, join me this week to hear me cover subjects such as:
- How I cope with stress
- How I met my darling Sigh!
- What I did before Ask Charlie
- My favourite cake recipe of all time
- Tips on potty training and positive encouragement
- Getting your children prepared for boarding school
- A very honest backstory regarding my history and relationship with my Dad.
Plus much more.
Thank you so much for watching and listening to this week. It was hard for me to talk about our family history. It's a raw and difficult process, one that we're still working through and that I will continue to work on for myself and my own family.
It is a great sadness in my life that I don't have that easy relationship with my Father that I would so love. I have however been so lucky to have some fantastic father figures - including my late Uncle Gerald, also known as Padre, who I will always hold incredibly close to my heart. And my Uncle, my Mum's younger brother, who I can pick up the phone to at any point and I know will always be there for me. He is an almighty role model and has helped more than my words will ever be able to express.

Charlie - you are so brave to discuss the difficulties that you had growing up with your father. Your beautiful family is your blessing now, and your past has made you such a wonderful parent - sometimes the negatives in our lives make us stronger in the opposite direction - which we can be thankful for. Thank you for your honesty - always know you are appreciated and loved!

In a social media world where many only show the glossy side of life, you have vulnerability and honesty. My therapist once told me that you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear and Dr Wayne Dyer said you can’t control how others behave, only your reaction to them. You have taken both those sentiments and run with them… No experience is wasted and, rather than replicate bad behaviour, you have used this to make you a wonderful wife and parent. Bless your soul xx

Thank you Charlie for being open to discussing this with us, it’s really resonated with me as I have similar issues with my relationship with my father. It just shows that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, we all can be given these curveballs in life that we are left to work through or live with. I have also found therapy helpful.

I was asked once by a client why I didn't talk about my Mum. I hadn't even realised that I didn't. My response was "i'm alright" but jokingly started twitching my eye and shoulder. It turned out she was a psychotherapist on relationships and suggested I try talking to someone. (I felt dreadful for mucking around). It was the best advice I've had. Working on being the best we can be and not letting the past keep us stuck in the past, I can understand how difficult that was for you to answer. 🤗 Crying is good for you if you feel you need to, don't apologise, get rid of that cortisol girl. You've had a tough time, I'm glad you had Padre Gerald and Aunty Margaret there for you. You are an inspiration and I always look forward to your videos, ask me anything talks, courses and now Podcasts! You are a very positive influence and your care for others really shines through. Well done and Thank you. x

Thank you for being so brave. I can totally empathise with you and sending virtual hugs. I married into a dysfunctional family and the felt so total bewildered. It has taken many years with fragile egos and self esteem to understand the mental problems and bullying. You are doing very well to stop it continuing to the next generation. Congratulations to you and Simon.

Oh Charlie, my heart broke for you. I’m so sorry you have had such a rotten time of it with your Dad, you’re very brave to talk about it. Whatever you decide to do, don’t ever feel pressurised just because he is family; do what is right for you, Si and your children. He shouldn’t talk like that about your Mum. I think we all imagine that everyone else has a perfect, idyllic family, but an awful lot of us don’t! Sending you love and hugs xx

Your father sounds so much like my father. And his father before him. Both brilliant men, but socially lacking. Love my dad to bits, but he’s not always an easy man, though not quite as difficult as yours sounds. But I can completely understand what you would have gone through. My brother and my two children are also on the spectrum, but early intervention therapies have done wonders. In fact, my brother has long been resolved to not be like dad. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Love from Sydney, Australia xx

Sending you so much love, so much of what you said resonated with me Charlie.... I had the good fortune, shall we say, to make amends with my father on his deathbed but they didn't erase the scars entirely! I often think they're the facets that reflect light off us .... on a Jewish note, I'll quote Leonard Cohen, "There is a crack, a crack in everything.... This was so brave of you to share this part of your life and I hope you continue to find peace and some resolution. Everything you’ve to endure has made you a more resilient woman which is why you are such an empathetic and loving mother/wife/sister/daughter/friend. In my own way I’ve gone through a different set of circumstances yet similar emotional journey as a child into adulthood with my family’s issues from disability to mental health and alcoholism. It’s taken me decades of mixed up emotions and confusion to learn to now accepting , find peace and moving on. It’s too cliché to say it’s made me a stronger person but I know I am resilient. I’m glad you have good people around you to support you, it’s so important to allow certain emotional torments to be released. You’ve created a lovely life with your lovely family and that is all that really matters now. I don’t know if this helps in anyway but I though I’d share. xx

Charlie, well done getting through that in such a composed manner. Your story, like others in your gang of loyal viewers, resonated with me. I too am the child of an RAF helicopter pilot who we suspect is a little ‘on the spectrum’ and my poor mother is still with him 52 years later, despite my siblings and I making suggestions that she’d be better off away. I know for long periods they barely talk and it makes her really sad. I went to boarding school, ostensibly to provide some continuity to my education outside of the 3 yearly house move, but with hindsight it got me away from him and allowed me to develop slightly more ‘normal’. In fact our Fathers may have known each other! Hopefully it’s not a trait that goes with the profession though as I followed in his footsteps and am currently flying Chinooks from RAF Odiham, in fact probably go over your house far too regularly for your liking… My lovely wife maintains my balance though, she is also an avid viewer of your channel. There is a possible explanation (100% not an excuse)for our sometimes brooding mentality though, hopefully the link will work! It’s a little tongue in cheek but there is a strong vein of truth in it. I am away from home and the country for 2 months yet again so thank you for your channel which provides some wonderful sights and sounds of Blighty. www.rotorheadsrus.us/documents/Helicopter_Pilots_Are_Different.pdf

Dear Charlie you are so brave to talk about your dad to us all. You are a lovely person and I feel for you. I think you are right to set boundaries for your dad and ensure why you have put them in place. You can still show him you care by writing or phoning etc in short bursts if you want to without his influencing the children so much, maybe, but don't beat yourself up about him. Do what makes you feel safe and happy. Lots of love, Lesley xx

Thank you for such a frank and fearless discussion about your father. I also really liked and the Q and A. Helpful advice. My parents are divorced and I have had problems with both of them at various times over the years. It is incredibly hard and I have always wished to have “normal” parents who are supportive and unselfish. Sadly not to be for me! I do have a very supportive husband who has tried to work his magic but to no avail. Nice to know one is not alone with these trials in life. Best wishes to you Charlie.

Charlie I’m so sorry you had to live through this. I know first hand that it can be very difficult. Unfortunately I’m married to someone who is very abusing verbally at times. You never know when it will happen. Our son has no relationship with his father for years. He is very protective of me. I have wanted to leave several times. I would have but I know my son would be stattled with him and I would loose half of my retirement. He has very little of his own. It’s all a bit upsetting and I try to keep busy and away from him as much as possible. One day I pray it will be better. Take care of yourself and your lucky to have Simon.
