*Hi guys, I apologize for this cover....from some of the comments I've been receiving, I understand that I've kinda failed here. I tried my best but there's only so much you can do with a weak voice and little folk instruments, lol. Still, a huge thanks to my regulars for sparing my feelings and writing a load of lovely comments for me ^w^ Love you!
'Answers' is from Final Fantasy XIV a Realm Reborn. It was a kickstarter request (aka mandatory cover) from my friend David. Just a warning: I have taken HUGE liberties with this song, both with the chords and the melody. The answer/chorus sections for example have a totally different melody than in the original - I will understand if fans of the song are upset by these changes, but trying it the original way would have only showcased how weak my voice and instruments are in comparison to the original. Just trying to make the best possible sound with the tools at hand.

@@chicolinceCHP Yes. When she lost her chest voice, she tried to re-learn singing by her head voice (which is when she recorded Jabberwocky and Tarts - and it was four years ago). Unfortunately, she started losing the head voice as well, as she mentioned in the update posted on her site a couple of years ago. As she is mentioning 'The three doctors that I've been to have all given me different vague diagnoses and nothing seemed to help. The last one I went to thought it might be something known as 'silent reflux' which means that acid from my stomach is creeping up and burning my vocal cords. It makes a lot of sense, however, if that is the case, the damage is pretty bad from going undiagnosed for many years.' She also mentioned trying to heal by changing the diet, and is asking for luck on her journey. But it is also the last we have heard from her.

Ok I wanted to see what the big deal was with her cover against the original. Erutan has a sound and style that she writes and in this case, arranges in. Her voice has an soft and breathy quality, and it works for the ethereal sound she seems to go for. It works great here. The original singer has a brassy sounding voice which lends itself better to heavy orchestration because of it's piercing quality. The best song composers write for their singer's voice, and Erutan's star singer is herself, so she rearranged it for her voice type. I feel that criticizing someone's artistic vision is unfair, because there is no right and wrong with something that subjective.

Wait... there's no point in criticizing something subjective? Lol. Ok lets all just completely ignore literal centuries of art criticism and the objective measures of quality, and whether or not something worked. I don't mind this version it's pretty decent. But to say that all criticism is invalid because it's subjective is either incredibly intellectually dishonest or plain idiotic.

This is not a fail. The original Answers was like Mother Hydaelyn crying for her children in a time of great pain. Yours is like a young mother Hydaelyn singing raising and nurturing her children in more peaceful, better times. There is an innocence to your version that is very beautiful. This is not a fail. This interpretation of the song also has a powerful new emotion thanks to Endwalker. I could absolutely see Hydaelyn appreciating this take on it because a big part of the lyrics is about her telling us that the suffering we endure in life is a fundamental part of it, and that from it comes the vitality and purpose of life. This simple, hopeful take is a beautiful way to support that message.

I don't know what to say. I discovered Erutan only recently. I had heard her Dragonborn song maybe a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. It filled a space in my heart and mind that other songs just weren't able to at the time. I don't even remember what it was but something brought me back to her work on Spotify recently. Here I am now discovering the range of her talent, and it may sound dramatic, but my chest feels bruised knowing I am late to the party. I read on her site that she had been experiencing trouble with her voice, and it seems like that was some time ago. I can't imagine.. but I do hope that she has found a way to be happy and content. This magic she's released into the world through her musical talent is forever. Here's to hoping she lets that creative spirit loose in more areas. 🌿 If you're reading these comments, I'd just like to say thank you, and be well.

Went through the same thing you did but in 2021. For me it was The Willow Maid, her (I believe) most popular original song. Went down the rabbit hole from there and she's been my favorite artist ever since. Her lyrics for You're Not Alone are my favorite out of any song ever. Even though I'm at a point in my life where I've been feeling particularly alone, I find myself humming her lyrics and automatically feeling fuzzy, as if I have a friend with me. I wish she could know the impact she's had on me and so many other people. Even though I wasn't around when she was active I miss her terribly. I hope she's safe and thriving wherever she is, whatever she's doing, and that her autoimmune issues don't detract from her happiness. Cheers to the future & to all our hopes for her joy. We love you Erutan! 💞

I usually don't comment any videos and I struggled with myself to write this one. But after reading the description and the comments, I figured I had to come back to this video and may I say that this song ultimately pushed me to play FFXIV:ARR? And I don't regret it. I heard your rendition of this song first and then, because of the description and the comments, went over to listen to the original song. Yes, your version is very different from the original, but it's not a bad thing. Your voice and instruments are very soft and very beautiful, it goes directly under my skin. I can easily see the original being some sort of battle hymn, which was sung in the midst of an epic battle, while your version of this song is something a bard would sing in remembrance of the epic battle in the past. Don't belittle yourself, please. It's very very beautiful.

Honestly Erutan, as someone who is a hardcore FF fan, being someone who enjoys FFXIV ARR and continues to play now, I think this rendition is just as beautiful as the original. Yes, the original was powerful and it was to move the listener to understand the words she sang, showing the pain Hydaelyn felt, I think your rendition is JUST as strong. It is soft, like a sorrowful lullaby yet you clearly reflect the caring and motherly side of the song. It's beautiful. I think this version pulls more emotion from me than the original and there is nothing wrong with that. With how beautiful of a singer and composer you are, you made it your own version and that is what makes it beautiful. You're beautiful Erutan! Never forget that. And your songs move us just as much as the originals

Your gentle, "weak" voice is purely beautiful. It gives the song an entirely different feel. It is a cover, it is supposed to give a different feel and sound different. If your voice was a power house like Christina Aguilera, others would like it. But with your voice that you personally have, a whole different group of people like it. You can't please anyone. Don't ever apologise for anything you do. You do everything so uniquely and magnificently. You play so many instruments and that's amazing. What I'm trying to say is that this rendition of this song is just... I love it. And so do others. Feel confident in your talents, lovely. I just found your channel and I am so glad I did. I think she used the word "weak" for her voice because it is, in actuality, weak. Not the way it sounds; soft is not the same as weak. She has been having major medical issues that make it difficult for her to speak, let alone sing. Her voice is, objectively speaking, "weak" when she recorded this, and still to this day 8 years later. The damage to her voice is apparently quite severe. Which, in my opinion, just makes this cover all the more impressive. She put everything she had into it and then some. Working through the fear and pain just to attempt to do something she loves: music. It shows how strong she is.

Powerful lyrics. I do not believe we were made to die, but mankind have lost our place in the garden the Creator made to live with us and the curse for rebellion has made our lives finite and broken. We were the only creature made to know God and were made to live with him forever, but we have all disobeyed him. Even the land is broken and the world is unjust although the beauty it was made with remains. The Lord deals with us in his holiness and punishes rebellion. But he is also merciful. He longed for restoration to us but since we could not approach him in his holiness God the Father sent his Son to be a man. So God came and walked with us. He witnessed to us who he was and to admit our rebellion and turn from it. But he also came to live, roam, hurt, suffer and die taking on our curse of death so that we might be given hope and be released. When he rose from the dead we finally see that we are no longer lost, for though we may die we will live again. Many have wandered, listened, reasoned, strived, worked, tried, to take back something we may not realise we had lost. Our glorious identity as those made in the image of God has been forgotten and we have become broken images. And we lost our place as children of God. Despite our effort there is nothing we can do to undo the curse ourselves, we live and die hopelessly. Yet now there is a reason to hope for by the death of God's Son we can be restored, partly in this life and fully when we live again. If you were listening to this beautiful song and you read this and are interested by the epic we really live in: you can find the story of the garden and the curse at the start of Genesis, after creation. An account of the life of God's Son Jesus is in the book John.

The first one is as stated above a battle cry, that calls to people to fight for their answers. It gets people hyped for war and shows why one should go to war. This one however displays the hope for a new beginning, the prayer that all will end well. They have similar meanings and messages and can be played in the same time although the effect it has is different.

"Tell me this and tell me true. Has your journey been good? Has it been worthwhile?" I'm yet another voice in the chorus of "this hits differently after Endwalker" - it's like you could divine the deeper meaning in Answers years in advance! The original is a powerful lament in the face of overwhelming destruction, and this is a more gentle invitation to consider the sufferings of life and pledge to carry on. I adore it.

From my understanding, the point of a "cover" is to be one's own personal rendition of another musical piece and that's EXACTLY what this is. To be honest, as much as I love the original version, I truthfully think this version is just as good! The overall tone and musical dynamics (diversity of instruments and supporting vocals) of this version equally capture the essence of the original's emotional meaning on top of adding an additional element of folk and spiritualness which in and of itself is something to be proud of to be able to master. Truly exceptional Erutan, please continue to follow this passion and make more music, be it covers or originals!

If the original was the goddess Hydaelyn singing to the people of Eorzea in the midst of destruction, this is the magical and sorrowful voice of a Bard singing to a captivated tavern audience. Every bit as a beautiful as the original, in a very different way.

As a hardcore FFXIV fan, I'm in love with this interpretation of the song. It absolutely feels like something Hydaelyn would love, and the sort of thing sung by folk singers deep in the forests of Girdania. You've done amazingly. Thank you so much!

Oh I'm so glad you reopened the comments on this. I loved it back then and I love it now. I always thought of your cover as a bard's performance, the way it would be sung if someone were speaking for Hydaelyn herself. Endwalker only made it better.

After listening to both the original and this cover I believe both are equally good in their own right. The original showed rawness and desperation for answers that can never be found. This version has an ethereal feeling like the hero has fallen to their lowest point but slowly gains hope throughout the rest of the piece until finally reaching a place of rest, leaving the rest of the journey to those following. Erutan, your strength lies in your ability to tell stories with your songs, while it may not be the same story that was shown with the original it is still a beautiful story that many (including myself) thoroughly enjoyed listening to! You DID NOT fail here! You succeeded in telling a story which in my opinion fits better than the original! Be proud of this! There will always be people who enjoyed the old over the new, this is life, what you can do is take their criticism with a grain of salt to see if there is anything you need to improve upon for later. You did another wonderful piece here, Erutan. I pray your voice recovers and that we will be blessed once again with your wonderful melodies. tl;dr - Erutan is awesome and both versions were wonderful.

My absolute favorite thing about your originals/arrangements is how immersive they are. Every song on this channel creates it's own unique and incredible world, brimming with culture and people and history. It's as good escapism as any novel; in fact, listening to your music brings back memories of my childhood, spent reading the great fantasy classics (lord of the rings, inheritance cycle, etc). It's obvious how much of yourself you put into these pieces, and I really appreciate that. Every time I listen to your music, it feels like I'm falling in love with music and fantasy all over again, and that's something very few artists and writers achieve. I truly believe your music is magical.

So after listening to this version about 20 times, I finally read your description and was appalled that you think this is a failure. It is in NO way a failure. From one musician (though not as well versed as yourself) to another, I can assure you that this rendition is absolutely amazing. The feeling is different than the original but I don't think that same feeling can be captured without doing a direct emulation. This is much more a hymn, reiterating the feeling of the game itself, and serves as a wonderful retelling of the Realm Reborn chapter. While the original served fantastically for the opening cutscene, this variant would better serve the credits, offering fond and nostalgic memories of the journey. I appreciate your concern for your fan's thoughts and responses but never take a musical endeavor, whether well received or not, as a failure. Rather, see it as just another experience to grow and better your craft. But, more importantly, it's music; the message you wish to portray and speak is yours to tell. Not everybody will like what you say all the time but it's still yours to speak. Keep up the great work and I love every album you have put out! You're one of my favorite artists of all time!

As someone who has been in the world of FFXIV for quite some time (since the first launch), let me say that I think you are selling yourself way too short here. In game, I have heard this song covered in several different ways from the original, and so you are not alone in putting a new spin on it. This arrangement makes it still fill familiar while adding new dimensions of emotion and musicality to it. I think you should be very proud of this piece, indeed. If there are haters out there, they are just those who don't understand the concept of an arrangement and that not every song has to be an exact duplicate of the original score. You've done something wonderful here. I realize I am late to the party on this one, but I could not just sit idly by after hearing it and realizing there were those that were giving you trouble for it. Keep it up and know that your work is terrific! I applaud you!

I know how it feels when it comes to taking iconically powerful songs when your particular musical style has a more gentle sound. After all, I don't have a notably 'strong' voice and the instruments I play also complement the softness of my vocals. If there is anyone who can take such a song and strip it down into something so raw, natural and beautiful, it's you. In the 8 years that my ears have been blessed by your songs and I have been fortunate to accompany you on your musical journey in your party of now, 80,000 (congratulations by the way!!), I've experienced you really master and own your sound. It's truly inspiring. With anything that deviates so far from the original, there's an added risk that people are going to more strongly prefer either the original or the deviant. When David requested this over Kickstarter, I'm sure he had every faith that you would put all of your talents and honesty into your rendition of this too; and he was right! Over the years, the enjoyment and security that I've felt whenever I'm transported into the world you create with your melodic vocals, your otherworldly harmonies, your medieval strings, your vehement percussion... I can't thank you enough for it. This is definitely up there, for me, as one of my Erutan favourites! What did David think of this? I'm sure he was so thrilled! *Hugs!*

While I love the original (it's just so powerful, intense and desperate), yours is a beautiful variation in itself (more mystical and sad). If I had to build lore around it, I'd say that the original fit the moment (aka, the world is GOING DOWN 'RIGHT NOW') while yours works with the current situation (it's a thing of the past, most can't remember it clearly, parts of it become blurred by myths and legends already). Both are perfectly valid in their own existence. So DON'T take the whining of some assholes to heart. If you would have simply made the song as in the original 1:1, then why cover? The beauty of covers is that someone takes a original and makes it their own. If I listen to a cover, I WANT it to sound different or else I'd listen to the original to begin with. Be proud of this song, I personally enjoy it a lot!

My Dear, having been a resident of Eorzea for the last few years, I feel obligated to comment on this wonderful piece of music. Those who do no appreciate this, comparing it to the original, have missed the point entirely... To this Miqo'te, these words are a prayer. One that when heard from such a humble voice, with such modest instruments in accompaniment, is more impressionable than that brutish war chant... It is those "little folk instruments" that make this ballad just as powerful as the original, if not a tiny bit more... I thank you for giving me this alternate view on such a one sided piece of music.

It is absolutely a perfectly suitable version. In fact, I like that this one is so different from the others. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Erutan. I understand you have to be critical of yourself to improve. However, I think you are critical of yourself here in error. Your version is beautiful and I love it. You should be proud of it.

I just watched the original and then yours right after so I agree with previous comments. Your voice has a breathy, delicate quality to it that makes the song sound dreamy and ethereal. The original suited the apocalyptic nature of the song, but this sounds like nostalgic, a whisper of the world of back then. I love both versions. The original has the drama and emotion and this one has that sad quality, like looking back on all that was lost, but wispy, like a half-forgotten memory. Both versions are very good. This is part of your artistic vision, never apologize for that. It isn't your responsibility to worry about their feelings. Do what you love. Though I have to commend you for taking such a difficult song and managing to make it fit to your voice so well, especially with how different it is from your voice type. Well done.

Every year, every expansion, this song hits different. And now, at the end of Endwalker, the end of the Hydaelyn saga, version gives a special feeling, and feels so very fitting to the endcap of this journey (I'll not elaborate due to spoilers, but those who have reached Endwalker will understand) Thank you, Erutan. Nice version, brings back memories, I was there and took part in the final battle, after that we just stood there, seeing Dalamud grow larger and larger, while this was playing in the background, like some haunting song. Then we got a system message, saying that we lost contact, we were all alone, the 8 of us, then the end of an era cinematic played and we knew it was all over. That moment was one of the most emotional ones in gaming that I've ever had the privilege of experiencing. This song brings some bittersweet memories, thank you for your beautiful version of it.

Every August there is an event in FF XIV called "The Rising", celebrating the re-launch of the game as A Realm Reborn. Last year, standing in the event area you could hear the distant singing of the original version of the song, a callback to the final hours of the original version of the game. It is astoundingly easy to imagine walking by a group of NPCs in the 2021 Rising event, all sitting with instruments out and a Miqo'te lass at the front, singing and playing your version of the song. Whereas the original was a song with a feeling of pleading to survive, your version has a feeling of optimistic hope. It is truly a fantastic cover and I'm so glad you made it.

Thank you for this. My daughter loves this song, and wants to hear it every night before sleep. I love this version better than the original. Love the medival instruments, I could only strive to be able to play them all like you. Thank you again for a lasting experience.

Covers are never meant to be 100% recreations of the songs they're based on, no two singers or bands ever have the same sound or style, you have no reason to apologize for your rendition of the song, because it's your version, it's not you singing like Susan Calloway.

There are also times when covers outperform the original such as Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" with his deep somber voice.

Your cover was fantastic, as if it were its own song. I am a huge fan of FFXIV (player too) and have to say that comparing it to the original isn't fair. You did well Erutan :)

I am a huge fan of the original Answers by Susan Calloway. It's intense, strong, and evokes strong feelings - not exactly "easy listening." I am thrilled to have this beautiful cover (and a cover is a RENDITION, not a duplication, haters!) that I can listen to before I drift of to sleep, or just when I'd rather hear something calmer. I love your choice in instruments and what you've chosen to do to honor the original song. I know hateful comments are difficult to ignore. Everyone's a critic. I just hope you don't let it hurt you too much. For every cruel person, I know there are more than a handful of good ones. Just wanted to add my encouragement to the mix.
