this is my favorite Liz Phair song. There is just so much vulnerability in this one. She really pours her heart out and as always, is totally unapologetic about it.

I don’t often like almost six minute songs but when I do it’s Liz Phair’s song 🎧

I once lived on a farm operated by my aunt and also had an ant farm. It was pretty neato.

I once had a spelling test when I was in elementary school and it had ten words and I missed one word and that word was Alaska and to tell the truth I'm still pretty damned bummed about making a 90 and I also don't like any of my aunts so you can see how your post stressed the hell out of me and I request you immediately delete it.

I love her songs. One of the interesting things about some of these earlier songs is that it sounds like it has a starting point in another song. For this one, I hear a lot of Sinead O'Connor's "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance" in the opening verses. In a song like "Down," I hear a lot of Seals & Crofts "Summer Breeze." In "F*ck Or Die," there is an obvious allusion to Cash's "Walk The Line." "Love/Hate" sounds like it's got Cheap Trick's "Dream Police" synthesizers in them.

Read about her on CNN and was curious. Very unique and beautiful vocals. Loved the lyrics. So damned unpretentious sounding.

it makes sense. it's a good kind of sad, like when your sis goes someplace cool and you dont. you get a sad feeling that your not going, but then you feel happier knowing that she'll tell you all about it and have a good time.
@bradfield22667 жыл бұрын
I don't get that impression at all! This song is all about abandonment and caring way more than the other person does. No happy ending whatsoever.

I love this album, only recently discovered her-- 2 days ago to be exact. I'm a 90's kid who had a deprived childhood so don't be too hard on me, lol I heard her newer songs, and they suck compared to her old stuff-- a complete 180, and she sounds like any generic female pop artist.
@blutius15 жыл бұрын
she says "I'm just an ant in alaska to you" in the lyrics. if that's not the title, what is it? either way, it's a great song. raw Liz Phair, at her best.

it took her 4 minutes to say ant in alaska.....

Heads up: if you haven't seen it already, you should be warned that the first murder in Hitchcock's Psycho doesn't happen until 40 minutes into the film. And they never say the word 'psycho'!

Lo-fi indie rock
@bradfield22667 жыл бұрын
The one she did as Girly Sound was lo-fi (recorded on consumer grade portable 4-track cassette deck) but this one was done in a proper studio with proper mics recorded onto 16-track 2" tape,, EQing, mastering. It's minimal, but that's nothing to do with sound fidelity. You can think of it as medium-fi.

God her debut album was amazing, but after that everything was the complete opposite of what she was doing with this album!!! Why she tried to go mainstream after this record is completely mystifying to me, well not really but still..... :/
@kevinjohnson31197 жыл бұрын
Actually, this wasn't on her first album when it was first released. They added it to the re-release.This was from her Girlysound recordings which IMO is her best work. Some of those songs made it onto Guyville (with some changes). A few of them made it onto other albums (Juvenalia and Come and Get it) Anyway, she went mainstream (or attempted to) for financial reasons. Her first three albums were loved by the critics, but didn't make her much money. Unfortunately, she didn't garner many new fans and ended up alienating a lot of her old fans. I still love her though.

Come on, her second album came out the very next year after this one and it was basically the same sound and quality of writing and playing. Don't be hatin on Whip-smart.

MusicIsWhatiLike a - I so feel the same. There are a few I like after this album, like the title track whitechocolatespaceegg, but when I hear most of it like "rock me" I wanna puke. Exile in guyville is one of my fav albums of all time, played it from start to finish so many times... what happened Liz :< whyyyy

There weren't any songs on comeandgetit that were initially Girly Sound songs. There was one that was reworked for Somebody's Miracle but left off the final track list. ("Gigalo")
@hanlonn6 жыл бұрын
over the years, I find myself listening to whip smart more than guyville.
