#AntMan #Review #Quantumania
First of all, disclaimer, I kind of hate rotten tomatoes, and how it’s now used as a marketing tool. It used to just be an easy way to access several reviews of a movie, and now for some reason, this aggregate score is being used to measure if a movie is good or bad. And the audience score tells me even less about a movie’s quality, because they can easily be reviewed-bombed by angry nerds. But I do think it's interesting that the audience score is so high for this movie. It makes me wonder, have critics turned on the MCU?
I mean, it is easy to resent the Marvel entertainment juggernaut. They take up so many screens in theaters that indie movies no longer have a shot, and they seem to be pervasive in every part of our culture. But that’s because…for the most part…everything Marvel makes is really good-like Quantumania.
And I will admit that it is in my interest to love Marvel movies, and for all of you to love Marvel movies, because then I get to explain them. But when something is disappointing-like Love and Thunder, I let you know. But this was by far my favorite Ant-Man movie, and it’s streets ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp.
The first Ant-Man was a good movie, and a fun departure from the format of most MCU films. However, its rep was damaged right out the gate because Marvel originally hired the brilliant Edgar Wright to create the film, and then they parted ways. So we were always going to judge that film based on what it could have been.
But I love everyman hero characters, the normal guys who aren;t geniuses or super soldiers, and scott lang is that guy [clip].
And the second movie was also fun, mostly because of the people who weren;t even superheroes [clip, card go?]. But the whole story about the hot potato lb, and Ghost-really grated on me on rewatches. Both Ghost and the Pyms want to rescue Janet from the quantum realm, and yet-they’re fighting? Is Bill Foster actually a good guy? Janet has quantum powers until she doesn’t? It’s just not the MCU’s strongest movie. It’s fun, but it never felt like it had an arc, or a theme-it was just the movie we had to watch before Endgame [scott in QR]
But Quantumania was the perfect ending to a trilogy. It took elements and ideas from the films and tied them all together in something fun and new. This film did for ant-man what Ragnarok did for Thor.
I covered a lot of these in our easter egg video, but this movie passes off a lot of elements that were introduced in ant-man. Like Hank saying [earn a look in daughter’s eye]. IN this movie, Casie is an activist who is disappointed that Scott is not using his great power for great responsibility. And at the end of the movie, he stands and fights kang. This isn;t really something we’ve seen scott do before-he makes the heroic choice when he doesn't have too.
Or, the fact that controlling ants is a dumb, silly power-but Hank turns this into an epic ability that makes him god king of an extremely advanced civilization.
I also saw a few people online complaining that this movie was too much like Rick and Morty. A valid criticism, since former Rick and Morty writer Jeff Loveness wrote the screenplay. And the two do share certain elements-like the councils or rick and kang, a microverse, and weird alien cultures. But these are not concepts that were original to rick and morty, Marvel has had the microverse for decades, and the Council of Kangs first appeared in avengers 267, in 1986. That’s before a lot of you were even born. Like you.
Doug: Who are you talking to?
I mean, no one in particular, but wouldn;t it be cool if like one person got real freaked out when I did that?
Doug: Yeah, like Blake. I’m talking to you Blake.

If you’re introducing a line where the hero says “I don’t have to win, we both just have to lose” then he needs to also actually lose. He didn’t have to die himself but he should’ve lost something. Since Hope clearly went for the sacrifice play when she jumped back to save Scott she would’ve fit the bill nicely. If she died then Janet would also have had to face real consequences for what she did.

At first I thought it was weird that Scott was walking around like a champ, having beaten Kang. Then he started realizing he might have messed up, I realized Scott hadn't won. @@claudewinters2091 i get it, if he would have won it would seem like a much bigger threat, but what i think they want to show is that he is a very different kind of a villain than thanos. Dude, you are absolutely right about Jonathan Majors. In Loki, I thought he was silly. Then saw Quantamania and how well he became another character and his sadness. It was very clear that I needed to watch the last episode of Loki again and boy. He really gives that character life. I can see all the emotions that I would feel if I had to make decisions. It’s not as easy as saying “Scott won.” He might have won the battle, but lost the war if that Kang was the one that could have actually stopped the Kangs we saw at the end of the movie. Now the theme is don't underestimate the little guy since his actions saved so many worlds from Thanos and these are still really fun characters to explore. We're also heading into a new big bad so the movies have to start small and get bigger as we move forward.

He is Human too. I think they did a GREAT JOB at that. Because it was a point when Janet said “it’s over” and Kang turns around with TEARS running down his face and said “you know better then anyone.. it’s never over”. We forget that he is human, and is forced to take lives, to possibly save his reality. I loved it. I felt how you did at first… but I am looking at it like it makes more sense once I really saw what they wanted to make. Even when she asked who is Kang?? He said “who I have to be.” I really think we will look back on this movie as a huge arc. They also showed us the ending in Loki. So it’s like a Tarantino movie… you can just show the story in any order.

I feel like the only way it was possible to "beat" kang, was kangs pride, he wanted to take someone with him to witness him win, Janet at first, then Cassie maybe, but then he says to Scott during the end fight scene, and I'm poorly paraphrasing, but he said, "I want you to always remember, you could have left." Instead of just killing them, he gave them too many chances to keep trying to stop him.

Funny you touch on that I forgot to in my rant. In the comics Kangs biggest virtue is his Pride. He is incredibly arrogant but extremely prideful. When the movie played into that it was great. The whole background on Janet and his relationship was amazing. I wish they heavily leaned into that. Everyone has a weakness and pride can be a delicious exploit if exposed correctly. This has been seen many times in the comics. Janet meant a lot to him because she believed in him when his own "variants" casted him out. It seemed as though Kang admired the intelligence of Janet or maybe a deeper connection. Deep down I think he wanted someone adding on to your point to witness his ascension or belief there of.

It should have been an intentional expedition or heist into the quantum realm into kang's micro empire, so that Janet could finally stop him after all these years. Scott's daughter sneaks on board using her suit and it goes wrong from there. Having the ant team come in prepared but still being unable to stop Kang would have been a bit more effective than them stumbling into it and still managing to get out. When I was a kid, the experience of sitting down with a comic always left me with more questions than it answered. And it was perfect in this. It’s escapism, and plot holes themselves aren’t always antithetical to escapism (just the one’s resulting from lazy writing). These films achieve what the comics did, and more. Before, until the conventions rolled in there was little in the way of community. Now, the fan community is practically everywhere and the films’ success is tied to this change in our culture. Also, in the earlier phases we were always like “can’t wait until the pallet of character expands and crosses over all the time. Well now it’s happening, and we have a breakdown of the simplicity of the overarching story (ie infinity - to - multiverse sagas). Boo hoo. I love it. We’ve always wanted it. Here it is! Marvel Team-Up from the 70s was so central to the development of the comics stories, and I’m happy to see it happening in the films.

Love your content as always! :) Offering a different perspective on the finale of the film: I would argue that the perceived "weakness" of Kang being "defeated" by the Wasp at the end actually further _lends_ itself to Kang's threatening nature and the development of his character in the MCU - but in the _long_ term. Those of us deep in the nitty-gritty details are aware of what, who, and the scale of what Kang represents. I like the idea that they are establishing here that even when you _think_ you have beaten Kang, how will our heroes ever know? This is driven further home by the epilogue sequence (which I agree made the whole film for me as well as a great ending). Overall, totally agree it's a mid-tier film but it is also my 2nd favorite Ant Man and I am so happy we are finally officially in new primary villain territory.

Thanks Ryan. Great discussion in a civil way. Setting a great example of how we should be discussing a movie 👍 I appreciate Screen Crush’s explanation videos of these movies - it enhances my viewing experiences of the movies. The end credits in this movie was better than for Dr Strange in Multiverse of Madness, Thor Love and Thunder. Those mid-end credit scenes introduced characters that we had never seen in the MCU before and then never saw them again afterwards. I think if you had seen Loki season 1, esp the finale, then the mid and post credit scenes makes sense. But if you had not seen or forgotten about the events of Loki then it will be confusing.

Quantumania was the most comic-book-feeling MCU film so far to me. And in a way that worked. Model was kinda goofy, but it made sense I'm content, the crazy ant pile of Scott variants, then linking it all together with a big villain and family working together to survive

Expectation really is the key. I've learned that for me my expectation directly corelates with how much I enjoy a movie. The high the expectation, the more I've found myself to be disappointed. When the sacred timeline is in shape, then time is in a bottle with lid by the "He Who Remains" which is a multiversal end point. There will always be a He Who Remains at the end to cap it all together. And before that happens the water must be out and open and wild. I really liked Quantumania, but I can agree that it felt like a huge plotline where Scott and Cassie didn't see eye to eye got cut for time that they gave to Kang instead of the Langs. I would have loved to see it go both ways and Scott having trust in Kang, then having the "Our word is our bond" thing leading to him staying behind in the Quantum Realm to keep his word to Cassie that he would rescue people, and that traps him away from her at the end of the film. End with them figuring that they will never be able to get back without Modok's machine, ambiguous in their future.

Big disagree. Ant Man is part of the Avengers and really deserved this because at the end of the day, like or not, he is basically the reason why in that universe everyone is still alive (and, of course, the rat who touch the button KEKW) , the problem is HOW they introduce him. They had blank check to explain how he lost the war against the other kangs, what is the purpose of his annihilation. They showed him like a huge deal, the Bogeyman, just to kill him like nothing.

I feel like all the Ant Man movies just have this little”it’s a comedy film and it’s happy so no one dies” thing and that was mostly fine at first but the more films they make with no one dying the less we will be expecting someone to die and qantumania being the most serious of them all, I feel like that’s a bit of a problem, especially that Janet helped the big bad of the saga and then they defeat him and literally walk out of it with barely any consequences

I agree with the points about cohesiveness as far as the overall story depending on how active you are as a viewer. I wonder if that would change if they started changing the names of shows to be preludes, interludes, or postludes to the films that people do actually see. Like if Wandavision had been Prelude to Doctor Strange 2 or if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had been a Prelude to Captain America 4 and Black Panther 2. Just an official acknowledgement from the studio of what is suggested/relevant viewing for each actual film. Also gives characters the ability to appear in things that aren't their own namesake projects like the comics, I thought that was the most fun part of Civil War was getting surprised with Black Panther and Spider-Man.

The comment about Kang being beaten/beatable, I believe it’s a precursor to a major power increase. I think the goal for Kangs narrative is for the audience to legitimately identify with his journey (more so than Thanos which I think was accidental) and root for him as he obtains power and fights the council even as that brings him into inevitable conflict with fan favorite characters.

Interesting theory but the problem is that Kang the Conqueror doesn’t like the other Kangs and the other Kangs don’t like him hence why they exiled him. Possibly he “intentionally lost” so that The Citadel of Kangs (Kang Dynasty) will fight the Avengers to protect the multiverse, they all lose to the Avengers leaving Kang the Conqueror the last Kang alive.
@20Justin1
@20Justin1 Жыл бұрын
I think it's simpler than that. Kang, by himself has no powers, he's like Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne. But when he has his suit and it's powered up by the multiverse engine and all that, he's near invincible. I felt like the stakes in this movie were high because when Kang has his suit in and it was powered on and maxed out, you can see that he isn't a force to be reckoned with. However, when they were able to disable his suit he basically became a regular guy, a buff dude with some muscle and fighting skills, but just a regular dude. He doesn't have those blue beams that instantly kill people or can make a impenetrable force field around him.

I think that at the end, Scott is trapped in a loop that's not real. I dont think he defeated Kang at all. I think he's stuck in an illusion. That's why things are slightly off.
