The world's major powers agree: the resources of Antarctica should be exploited peacefully. They have promised to promote peace and scientific research in Antarctica, and to protect its environment. But is this spirit real, or just a lot of talk?
This documentary features interviews with researchers, activists, diplomats, and military personnel from Spain, Russia, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, and the United States. There's been much debate over how to share control of resources in Antarctica, which is the world's oldest ecosystem. Critics say that behind the scenes, a game of high-stakes poker is underway. Could this competition end in armed conflict? Or will Antarctica serve as a model for peaceful international cooperation? This film addresses these complicated issues with in-depth analysis, accompanied by magnificent images of the Antarctic landscape. The documentary's soundtrack was composed by Javier Weyler, former drummer of the Welsh rock band, the Stereophonics.

@@SnakeBush You're just dismissing something you don't agree with as 'racist'. The strange thing with people nowadays is that they have no issue with people criticizing governments of their own nation. Not really our technology has advanced to the point where we can desalinate ocean/sea water. In desert countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia they now have massive farms watered entirely by the water they get from desalination companies that just remove the salt from ocean water and turn it into drinkable fresh water. You can even make your own desalination device, there’s DIY KZfaq videos on how to make them yourself. It’s a pretty simple process really, the fears of fresh water scarcity & water wars started in the 1980’s back when they didn’t have desalination technology, now that we have this tech all we have to do is make it more widespread and fresh water worries will be a thing of the past. It’d be nice if these journalists would be aware of the new tech that exists and stop jabbering on about water scarcity for more views (but fear always sells so they probably won’t). Plus with glaciers melting causing sea levels to rise it means that taking more water from the ocean to turn into fresh water will actually benefit everyone. The only thing holding us back is cost, governments will have to invest in setting up the new infrastructure, and since we still have abundant fresh water in the world these governments will probably drag their feet on spending money for a while unless they’re desert countries like Israel/Saudi Arabia which don’t have much freshwater and so they’re building the infrastructure now.

@@azreal629 Many don't want to hear that we can easily use technology to supply water wherever needed . You can easily add trace minerals very cheaply . What will the next 'Greta ' guilt us over ? What will the very same people behind the extreme environmental push go to war/sanction over ?
@azreal629
@azreal629 3 жыл бұрын
@Geel Jire Maya walaal that’s actually a misconception, the tap water we drink actually already has its minerals removed because by adding fluoride to the water to purify it the natural minerals will degrade. In fact most higher end water bottle companies will re-add minerals into the water supply because while they’re purifying the water it gets stripped it of its minerals. And since most gulf Arab‘s drink water bottles anyway I doubt they would have a problem with drinking desalinated water with minerals re-added. And besides we’re not even getting important trace minerals from most of our food anymore since during the farming manufacturing process minerals are stripped from the soil. Which is why people are so deficient in magnesium and several types of B vitamins these days.

@EK89 Wow, not very nice man. You assume i must be a psychiatric patient? Let me be clear, i am in fact quite lucid and i do not believe there are alien structures under the antarctic ice. I also do not believe to know that there can absolutely be no ancient or alien structures there. I do know however, that anatomically modern humans have been around for roughly 200.000 years, and presumtuous and dogmatic 'academics' only have a vague idea of what we have been doing for the last 10.000 or so of it. That's 5% man, that's nothing. Antarctica is a giant undiscovered landmass, same as the Sahara, the Amazon, oh and of course entire seafloors that where above water not that long ago (until the end of the last ice age about 11.800 years ago). Climates change, tectonic plates shift and cosmic impacts are a thing. Try opening up your mind a bit you pre-programmed lab rat. Read some Graham Hancock. Oh and also, aliens are probably here buddy, watch The Phenomenon.

Thanks DW for this great documentary which amongst other things provides detail insight into the human beings and our destructive tendencies towards nature in our quest for additional resources even if the ones we already had have because a curse to us. I wish the consensus ban on mineral explorations in the Antarctica will last for another 1million years. Why looking to prospect resources even in the Antarctica when we know for certain that such actions would bring us closer faster to our own destruction via climate change? Oil giant British Petroleum (BP) has sold off and left the Arctic Alaskan because the permafrost supporting the oil extraction infrastructure is warming and thawing fast that in few years everything could collapse. Is this not suppose to be a lesson to seriously consider before commencing another exploration activities in the Antarctica? When do we ever put sustainability first before profits?

As an environmentalist and working in the environmental field I have always wanted to visit Antarctica. I am aware of the impacts tourists can have on pristine environments. How about having the tourist do some volunteer work with the scientists. Make it compulsory so that only people that are really passionate about the environment would go.

As climate change takes effect, nations will lay stakes and fight for dominance in resource rich areas and trade routes worth billions which will have a devastating effect on the water and air quality and the native animals in those areas.

When I watch these documentaries about our Southern border,I'm more and more amazed. They only show what they think we need 5o see and know. But I always ask,what could they have found out that made all the the countries come together and sign a traety ? !! A treaty that still stands today . What about those early explores? Why did they look so disillusioned after reaching that southern point? Could it be that they finally found and realized a very serious and life changing FACT ?!!! SOME of them after visiting this place and seeing things NOONE else has seen yet ,changed and died broken. I will ask why until we know the whole truth .

I congratulate this group for their accurate representation of Antarctica. I concur with many of their conclusions. The situation with visitors is out of control, I know because I was one. In 2010 I was a guest aboard the cruise ship "Star Princess" to Antarctica. Fortunately we never disembarked, the reason given that there were too many of us (3,000) which simply was not possible to do. I had no problem with that because all you could possibly do is trample about and take photos of penguins. But you would inflict serious damage to the land by allowing hoards of humans to just mull about. I think some people just want the right to say they set foot on Antarctica. The place is so huge, just being next to it in the water is just as good. Another point they alluded to, frankly it is dangerous to go there. At times it is so calm and serene you will be taken off guard and suddenly, I mean in seconds your life is in danger. I am talking about being simply on a ship. We were cruising the Gerlache Straight when katabatic winds hit with tremendous force such that our 900 foot cruise ship was listing so badly that you could not open doors. They had to block off the deck on one side as the captain suddenly had to turn the ship around on a dime within just a matter of minutes. Later I learned that we were being blown off course and were headed into uncharted waters, which they mentioned in the video. The captain was in no mood for exploration, thus we successfully turned around. His skilled actions probably saved our lives as we were at risk of capsizing right there. It would have been another "Titanic" outcome. The water is so cold people could live for only 10 seconds if you go overboard. So, that said, it is the most beautiful place on earth, and while the videography was amazing in this documentary, nothing is close to actually being there. It is profoundly spiritual. As we headed out, I took my last look and vowed to never return. I loved the place that much.
