Hi John. Wonderful video. Your humility is refreshing, but don’t sell yourself short. Amateur doesn’t mean lack of knowledge, know how, or experience, in my opinion. To me, the main difference between a professional and an amateur is pay or no pay, not know or don’t know. 73.

Very clever idea. I'm going to use this for my ground-mounted vertical to move it down in high winds which I get in my area occasionally. I love your old-school CAD program.

I built something similar, although not as fancy for the military surplus masts. It was simply a 12 x 12 inch 1/4" thick plate that i drilled and taped for a tilt over. what i used for the tilt over was a 4" hard plastic wheel that you buy at the hardware store remove said wheel and you have a metal bracket which i mounted a piece of metal conduit to the wheel axle the mast slips over the conduit, and i stake the 12 x 12 plate to the ground I have 30 feet of aluminum stack-able pipe on this set up, with my 10 meter antenna atop it. it's currently guyed in four places in my yard.jim

Thank you for this video. I think on the top bolts maybe you could use a pin with Carter keys that way it's easier than bolting and unbolting to let it down. Great video!!!

This came at a perfect time. I am going to be putting up a tower, maybe two. all I can say is the taller the tower, the heavier the metal needs to be to be stable in the wind ... Kansas has just a little wind, you know.

John, I just watched it again. To prevent the back plate from bending, a U bolt with a saddle bracket for pipe would provide added strength across that area. a muffler clamp usually includes the saddle bracket and maybe that item is best gotten at the auto parts store as opposed to the hardware store.

W5CYF / TinkerJohn I’m building a flag pole antenna now, just to see if I can build one for $100-$150 and not over $1000 like the commercial ones. I think I will incorporate your hinged bracket! I just finished an OCF copper water pipe antenna and it is hoisted to the top of one of my 85-90’ oaks trees (swr 1.036:1). first contact was to New Zealand (ZL1WN) on 20m with less than 100w.

Two ideas, 1/8 fine but if 1/4 not available you can use two 1/8 plates each side but must seal between each plate to avoid water damage. also there is a better u bolt for the pipe. Mine is heavier (25lbs) than a 4bvt so changes helped. I used three u bolts and an additional cross pin above tilt over to prevent accidental collapse due to fatigue on parts. JB WELD will work between plates pr a permatex seal around edges BUT MAKE SURE THEY ARE SEALED!

Hey John, I always enjoy watching your videos! And another set of eyes can always see something that could be done differently. If there was enough room on the inside to put another piece of angle where you bolted the U-bolts. Drill a hole in the angle that the U-bolts would fit through to match the holes in the bracket. Then put the angle inside before you bolt the U-bolts to the bracket. Make sense? I hope so...

Would love to see your parts list. It seems that instead of fabricating your steel rectangle container, 2-3/8" Galvanized Chain-Link Fence Adjustable Wood Adaptor Model Number: 1715515 Menards ® SKU: 1715515 could be used off the shelf. Bonding 4 of these adaptors would be faster compared to fabricating one, for me.

Nice build. I was just looking at how it is configured and how the antenna goes down toward the soil, I had a thought that if you inverted the tilt base so the hinge is at the top it would lay over the top and the antenna bas would be accessible and would not be in the soil. Just an idea.

Needed to adjust size of plates to accommodate 2.5 inch ground pole and then antenna. you can use larger angle and run a threaded bolt thru as hinge. Like this as cost 25 total. mast 35 antenna wire 12 coax and pass thru for wall the most. See you on USB 20 or LSB 40. oe CW?

I need you to do another video. Or get someone to deal with passing thru stucco/chicken wire homes coax. There are metals available from commercial suppliers lighter but stronger actually the 1/4 inch AR steel bulk head plate but easily formed or tooled. Not here locally but most major cities can get cheaply. If you are tens of miles from anything like that there is a custom metal outfit that will do small orders and advise. With this I am SSB on 20 meters mornings after March if you hear KG5WKO shout back. Keep the videos going as plug and play is not for me but cutting fingers and hammering hands is!!!

Hey John Getting ready to purchase a BTV 40-10. I have some 1 1/4” od thick wall EMT in my scrap pile and was wondering if that would be strong enough for the ground mount. Going to put it down about 3’ to 4’ and add some cement, leaving 2’ above ground. HD has it in 1 1/2” to 2” od thick wall if you think that’s will make a better support. No hurry on the reply, I got to wait for this heat to move before I get out there with my post hole digger. If you have any suggestions on the set up that would be helpful too. 73 wd4dda Clinton, MS.
