Anthony Burgess remembers the release of the film of A Clockwork Orange, and tells a dubious story about Stanley Kubrick's directing technique.
A Clockwork Orange is rereleased at UK cinemas from 5 April 2019.

Death threats make for great publicity, but they're rarely more than threats and seem aimed as a caution more than a direct act. No one who creates art sensibly should ever receive them.

Are you thinking of Stephen King who hated The Shining? I don't think Burgess hated Kubrick's ACO, but I may be wrong.

I don't think he hated it, but it followed the American narrative of his book which excluded the final chapter. In the introduction to later American publication, Burgess showed irritation that the American edition and subsequent adaptation didn't follow the same ending as his originally published novel. He claimed the publisher required the 21st chapter to be removed (there was also symbolism w the # of chapters, Alex grows up and 21 is the age of maturity blah blah), but the publisher says it was merely a suggestion.

Provoking them? It's not a happy ending for the narrator should have been viewed as a cautionary tale not as a tempting lifestyle.

Burgess’s original ending was different , it had Alex running into one of his old gang members who settled down and started a family . Alex was pondering doing the same.
