...including the reason Graves quit England: 'too many houses' and the grotesque practice of ribbon building.

Well well well. Long time no viddy droog. How goes? Good to see you up and at it again. I've read You've had your Time and the Wanting Seed since you last posted something. So good. Getting a feel for Burgess politically and as a matter of character more and more. The time of his departure is sooooo critical. 1993. He as well smas some other Great Souls taking a night train out as the plague of the internet age rushed in like creamed and tainted cheese.

Ah, yes, he was pre-internet, that's so. He didn't even bother with the word processors of the time. In YHYT he says he tried using one and the machine contrived to delete his stuff, so he went back to industrious clacking on the Olivetti.

Not about Graves but just been watching your excellent Burgess on Malta playlist. Really very interesting, it illuminates and helps me understand the man & his life so much more. Thank you.

Yes glad you haven't topped yourself, old boy. But I thought you would have shared Grave's prejudices ....

I came close to putting an end to it all, Brian, old chap, you're right. I became so oppressed by the wave of censorship that is sweeping KZfaq. But I held back.

I do share Graves's prejudices, yes, but secretly. It wouldn't do for my prejudices to be publicly known, as I present myself on this channel as a Man of the People, or at least as a Man of the Petite Bourgeoisie. But between you and me, Brian, those gimcrack semi-detached houses, all to the same design, that were thrown up with rapidity and shoddily all over England in the 1930s alongside roads in these horrid ribbon developments are intolerable, are they not? These little boxes of houses are unbelievably characterless, as Burgess's house guest Peter Green put it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLNnobqkxtOqkXU.htmlsi=2DcTxZBU0e-6JSCM The dwellings should all be demolished so that we can enjoy the countryside again. Too many houses indeed! Or else, get away from it all. Me, I have gone to live in a charming villa on the Amalfi coast, and there is no ribbon building within a hundred miles. All these owners of semis should do the same to save England.

@@InSearchOfAnthonyBurgess yes all these vulgar working class monstrosities should be demolished and replaced with elegant mansions for real people, people who matter.
