To all asking why it took him 20 yrs to escape, it was because he was a broken man when they destroyed his family. Now with the return of his former adversary, he found a new drive to get revenge i think

Nah he seemed to knowledgeable for that. You could tell he was planning this for a long time, plus he must have stayed in shape otherwise he wouldn't have been able to strangle that guard. I mean maybe he needed to wait specifically for someone to die like that so he could swap places, but I highly doubt it, it really was just for plot purposes IMO.

@@schoolofgrowthhacking I would say for good reasons too. I would think they use the name Anthony Hopkins to specify who is playing Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro in 1998. I mean in the past if we go back to 1957, that would be Disney Zorro and clearly, Anthony Hopkins was NOT the one playing the 1957 version of Zorro. In 1957, Guy Williams played Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro. That would prove that Anthony Hopkins would not be the only actor who plays Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro since other actors played him in the past.

I would assume they don't know who Zorro is. I am sure when used to start out as audience at the time Zorro was young and in his prime until Raphael find out the identity of Zorro. Then after that, the rest of the prisoners may of wanted to help Zorro escape even if they don't know the identity of it and most likely those prisoners must be proud not knowing it but is willing to help Zorro out. When they see that mask, they all wanted to claim they were Zorro so that the real Zorro escapes. I bet they most likely do not want to ask for help because they want to make sure Zorro saves himself.

It shouldn't have been that hard to find zorro for a villain like Don Rafael.. I mean, he knows what Don Diego looked like before prison, but even though he has changed, there are ways. He could have asked for "Don Diego de la Vega", a name which the other inmates wouldn't have known. Or when the first guy says he's Zorro he could have said: "alright, guards.. cut this man's head off!" In a movie like this, that would have surely prompted the real Zorro to shout: "Don Rafael! I am the one you seek! Face me now..!"

Notice right before the guard tells the prisoners to reveal Zorro, Don Rafael is looking Don Diego in the eye. He was seconds away from realizing who it was and then that dumbass guard opened his mouth. As for why Don Rafael didn't speak up himself, maybe he thinks because he's a don that he's much too important to waste his breath on these lowly criminals.

I know how you feel. Tell you what. watch the 1957 version of Zorro. That character will be Don Diego de la Vega but except it will be young version of him where he is still single and no kids. He will still be a man that came back home from his study abroad program from Spain and commit to being Zorro. At least there are more happy endings about his legacy and you won't see Don Diego de la Vega's legacy end in the Disney Zorro version. The 1998 version is where you see Don Diego de la Vega's legacy ends. If you watch the 1957 version, you will know that Don Diego lives with his father and will have a servant named Benardo. At least you won't see his legacy end. You won't get your heart broken if you see Zorro in the past version. Your heart will be broken if you watch the 1998 version.

3:04 This part is very cool. Throughout the whole movie, Hopkins displays a deadly economy of motion which really makes sense for someone so proficient at violence as the legendary Zorro. The way he pretty much jumpscares both this guard and the audience in order to begin his escape is very badass. I will say, this whole grimdark sequence in which Zorro loses everything and has to languish in a disgusting underwater prison for decades is an ... odd direction to go with the Zorro franchise, and really clashes tonally with the rest of the movie- the younger Zorro's almost slapstick swashbuckling adventures, his flirtations (and stripping of) Elaina later on in the film; it's really weird when juxtaposed with the older Zorro's absolutely tragic backstory which opens the movie. Hopkins plays the character as presented very well, and overall it manages to work. But I can't help feeling that this is somewhat a case of classic 90s Edge, and wondering if it was really that necessary to have in the film. Still. Cool escape scene.
@trequor
@trequor Жыл бұрын
I dont find it "edgy" in the slightest. The ending of the movie is similarly dark, even if the middle is more lighthearted. The beginning is necessary to explain why Zorro "left" and then returned. His relationship with Elena is essential to the plot. This stuff is classic for revenge stories. It's been a staple of the swashbuckling genre since Dumas published The Count of Monte Cristo 200 years ago

Got to expect that they have to use an actor's name because other actors had already played Don Diego de la Vega in the past. They use the actor's name to specify who is playing Don Diego de la Vega. In 1998, Anthony Hopkins played Don Diego de la Vega but in 1957, Guy Williams played Don Diego de la Vega. This whole thing is just telling us that Anthony Hopkins is not the only actor who played Zorro. If you watch Disney Zorro, it will be the black and white film and Anthony Hopkins would not be playing that kind of Zorro.

I would assume they wanted to specify who is playing Diego de la Vega in 1998. In 1957, Guy Williams played Diego de la Vega. When they say Anthony Hopkins, it means Anthony Hopkins plays Diego de la Vega. You have to let the youtube creator use that name to be specific. Don't forget that other actors can play Zorro too you know. If you watched Disney Zorro, you will know Anthony Hopkins did not play that kind of Zorro because it was the 1957 Zorro. We all know Anthony Hopkins was not an actor back in 1957. The one who played Zorro back in 1957 was Guy Williams. Anthony Hopkins played Diego de la Vega in 1998 while Guy Williams played Diego de la Vega in 1957.
