This is an insane story. In California, we have what's called a 5150 which is a mandatory 72-hour psychiatric hold, but 99% of the time it's strictly for people in danger of hurting themselves or others. I've never heard of hospitals having the power to arbitrarily hold people just for being drunk, as long as they didn't affirm they were suicidal or something. Good lord.... what a racket to bill the insurance companies.

In case anyone finds themselves in this situation, remember you have to request a hearing with a judge to sign yourself out after the 72 hours. They will not notify you of this, and keep you drugged up in the hope you will forget. If your doctor cannot come up with sufficient reason to keep you, they will release you after the hearing. So remain on your best behavior, which is hard to do when your fundamental rights are being trampled on. It might be necessary to comply with taking their poison, because if you refuse the doc will use that against you.

Oh, no they make money on those commitments. Yes, they do. Some of these psychiatrists are crazier than mentally ill patients. This could also follow you too, oh you were committed. And scarily a spouse in Fl. can have you committed for their own nefarious reasons, and your parents can’t get you out. I know a situation where someone was very sick, needed to go to ER and the husband who was cheating suddenly attacks her and starts screaming you’re crazy and gets a nurse while they are rolling around in the grass, she escaped thankfully and later found out he could have had her committed, and she would have been helpless.

This isn’t rare and happens ALL the time especially in FL with the Baker Act. What happens is they’ll go for being too drunk or high and end up saying the magic words I wanna hurt myself/hurt someone else and they are legally obligated to keep you however long that state dictates when hide hours are up they can either let you go, ask you to sign yourself in for extra care typically 5-7 days, or have a judge court order you there. What they pull with a lot of women here who’s husbands boyfriends are “care takers” is liable the woman as having battered woman syndrome. If this ever happens to you just go with the flow you’ll be out in a few days it is not worth fighting the more you fight the more combative and unstable you seem even if it’s justified they hold all the power. It sucks but I’ve seen it save a lot of lives before these more strict laws came to be there were a lot f botched suicide attempts that got sent home to later successfully off themselves. Also this can happen to ANYONE so people really shouldn’t judge the kind of people this happens to. It’s not just the skitzos and homeless. Also less combative you are the better level of care you’ll get in these hospitals there’s typically four types of care Dual Diagnosis for detox these people are typically normal just suffer depression and substance abuse, geriatrics elderly people yes ppl are disgusting enough to ditch their parents grandparents at these kind of places, then extreme baker acts and psych holds often brought in by police and ordered by court you don’t want to be on this floor but people find themselves there by acting up and fighting (that’ll just get you four point restraints and a shot in the ass) then voluntary care people who either sign themselves in to begin with because they are suicidal/homicidal and it need med management under supervision also people who are baker acts but aren’t acting up and willing to sign themselves in. So yeah this does happen and can happen to anyone and sadly it is abused by insurance companies but also people who want and need help aren’t due to insurance so it goes both ways. Lots of holes in this story. I work as a psych nurse in a big city hospital. There is always a shortage of psych beds so only the most acute are hospitalized and you need 2 independent assessments by MDs for involuntary. Hospitals don't make money like keeping psych patients--they open bariatric clinics for the big bucks. Sounds like she was dosed with Haldol which only happens when a patient is violently psychotic. For a hospital to risk a legal charge of imprisonment, her behavior must've been over the top and well-documented.

At 30:52 Jimmy asks how could this involuntary hold affect her down the road. Once you are civilly committed against your will it goes in your permanent medical record and you cannot have it removed. I’m not sure if she is a proud 2A supporter like Ant is but her name will be on a database that police departments do check when approving FID cards and pistol permits. When she gets a new job and had to choose a health plan her insurance companies all have access to that information and it will be one of the things that they will use to determine eligibility. In the future if there is even a hint of depression or drug abuse and a medical doctor has to make a decision to keep her for treatment this will definitely be used to make up his/her mind. This is no small thing like going to the ER for a broken arm. This has long lasting consequences. As far as suing the doctors or hospitals….. I say good luck. The deck is stacked against you and they already have a paper trail filled with all kinds of legalese and buzzwords that no attorney will take the case because they know how notoriously difficult it is to win a lawsuit against a hospital. I’m just telling you like it is. I’m writing this obviously years after the event and I have zero clue how this all worked out but I’d be willing to bet my left nut neither Ant or his girlfriend got any type of sense of retribution for this whole debacle.
