I wish I knew more about modern edits. Like one or 2 colors total. Like the deep blue night shots or bar shots or concert shots. And those brownish orange modern edits of nature.

Anthony - I'm a beginner with Lightroom, and have discovered that while there are lots of useful KZfaq channels, most assume a certain amount of prior knowledge, and that creates a real barrier for someone new to the field. This is hands-down the best video I've seen in terms of explaining the basics. I wasn't really sure how colour grading differed from the RSL adjustments until I saw your explanation here. You strike the perfect balance (not easy to do I think!) - beautifully clear, really well expressed. Thanks so much!

KZfaq needs to add a double/triple like option. I gave you one like the first time I watched this video. Now I played it again, because I am now doing some color grading and needed a refresh... but there is no double like option. 😆

Oh my! When someone has a full understanding of a topic is one thing. But when they can really, I mean REALLY pass/explain this knowledge onto another person, that's something. My add brain struggles to connct things, to sometimes understand one word that just won't click in right away and there we gooo I'm missing a whole point. But what you did here? Using multiple different words for the same thing, break down the total basics. I will be forever grateful. And whenever my brain forgets what we learned here, I'm just gonna come back and have a bath in your awesome clear words again. Thank you!

Great tutorial! Thank you for that! A video on the tone curves would be cool! What I find really hard in Lightroom is how all the different tools work together. I mean, there are so many ways to achieve what you want. For example, making the whites darker: you could use the basic panel, the tone curve and even the grading tools. If you could explain this, I think this might be a very helpful tutorial for a lot of us :)

There is a physiological reason the green tint with contrasting orange focal points so common in modern cinematography. The rod cells which cover most of the of the retina of the human eye are only sensitive to a narrow band of colors in that green part of the spectrum and are 3000x more sensitive than the RGB sensing cone cells which are concentrated around the optic nerve and fovea which is actually a blind spot in the center of our vision. The high sensitivity of the rods gives us the ability to detect movement (threats) in the edges of our vision, especially at night. That happens then is the brain sends the eyes to focus on that spot with the higher resolution but lower gain RGB cone cells and then it “tunes out” signals being sent by the rods creating “tunnel vision”. So when a cinematographer lights the overall scene with a green tint it will cause the brain to focus instead on the contrasting orange tint content. Other forms of color contrast between background and focal points have the same eye leading effect. It isn’t the lighting that leads the eye in is the holistic contrast gradients created with a combination background content, clothing, faces and lighting on them. That is why in movies so much planning and storyboarding goes into color coordination of everything in the scene so what is important to see contrasts. Outside of studio photography difficult to do in stills but the question to ask when composing and lighting a scene is ‘what is most important and how can I make it contrast holistically?’ For example if the subject is wearing a distracting white or red dress putting them in front of a white or red background wearing a white or red hat is a strategy for making their face contrast even before thinking about how to light it. The better you get at doing that when taking photos the less post-processing adjustment you will need to make 😊

The still photography community is lacking behind on color grading because of the long lasting dispute of "organic", while cinematography world embraced this from the very beginning when technology was just available, the cinema/TV world is just more practical, without the burden of "art", because most of them are commercial visual products, all it matters is it "looks good" and "sales good". So after a long time the tools are becoming quite different also. I found that Davinci Resolve is much much better and I actually learn all this on video... The standard workflow of "color correction" -> "artistic color grading" in the cinematic world is very refreshing. In Lightroom everything is mixed up, you see a lot of videos mixing up exposure correction, color balance, and artistic grade all together, I think it's partly because of the Lightroom lacks of the node structure, it's just how it supposed to be done. I actually tried to grade stills in Davinci Resolve and I feel that is just more comfortable... Especially you have that bigger picture of the whole process. You video is very good only if I had seen it at first.
