I'm half Native American myself (Cherokee), so I've always appreciated this song and it's lyrics. It's been said countless times on here, but this singer, Joey Belladonna is also Native American. So those lyrics were coming straight from the heart.

Indians was written in 1987. The song with Public Enemy was released in 1991 but it was really a historic moment because it was the first time we really saw non mainstream metal and non mainstream rap come together. It really impacted generations of music. Next thing Ice T and Body Count took off. Rage blew up. Then later everything was rap metal and angry white teenage metal kids (like me) got into rap like Ice Cube, Dr Dre, and Snoop. I think people my age grew up in an epic time of music.

Anthrax's writing ability gets overlooked because of their punk-rock-party-thrash style, but when you focus on the lyrics, they are REALLY good at writing. Now, since you guys don't care for Joey on vocals, Anthrax did have a different singer starting in 1992 (John Bush) who sounded very different, and you would probably like him better, and the band too, because they took on an entirely different, more mature sound during that era. (I got the impression that you have heard "Bring the Noise" already, but if you haven't - you HAVE GOT to check that out.) A really good John Bush era song would be "Only" to start out with. You will probably be shocked by how different the band sounds.

I've been a huge fan of this band since age 14 (when Among the Living was released, I'm 46 now)...the biggest of the B4 for me, at least at the time. One of the biggest attractions was the social message, coming off massive Dead Kennedys fandom as I was at then (and still now, check out Holiday in Cambodia for starters, please). Anyway, you've identified the punk influence, the open minded musical cross-pollination, and the inherent social conciousness that exists with these guys well. Love your work LiV, keep it rollin'.

When I heard that song, it was the day that Anthrax died a little for me. The start of the opening track off The Sound of White Noise, Potters' Field got me pumped. Heavy, fast, loud and then Bush opened his mouth and it all turned to shit. Bush is a great singer if you're into Journey or that time of band that requires a singer like him but metal requires the imperfect to be perfect.

Love that you reviewed this one. "Indians" was the first Anthrax song I'd ever heard..I even remember when it happend and what i was doing at the time. Such a great song from a great band that really has a history of contrasting the aggressive nature of the music (unappealing to some, I might add) with a lyrics that really make you think. I've always loved this song and it's still as relevant today (Standing Rock, anyone?) as it was in 1987 when it came out. Well done, guys!

Great reaction, guys! And to answer George's question about whether the fans actually took these lyrics to heart, I can answer with an emphatic YES. I grew up on this music in the 80s and can say with certainty that the social commentary in metal music helped shape my thinking and made me who I am - which is someone with deep empathy and compassion for those suffering oppression in this world. Songs like Indians, Disposable Heroes (Metallica), Revelation Mother Earth (Ozzy), Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Maiden) and Run to the Hills (Maiden) taught me so much about injustice. After hearing Indians I went on to read books about the TRUTH of Native American history (not the bs they taught in school). I ended up becoming an activist and remain very involved in social justice issues. I thank metal music for helping to open my eyes.

Thanks Mauricio. I'm more of an armchair activist these days but back in the 90s and 00s I did my fair share of civil disobedience and other forms of protest. You're so right, it's not easy because you take on a lot of suffering when you allow others' problems into your psyche. But the only alternative is to do nothing and that's just not happening. Antony, be careful what you wish for. You never know when you might need a warrior to fight on your behalf.

Belladona, the vocalist, made a huge impact in giving Metal from the East Coast a new, fresh, high pitched vocal sound that Metal from the West Coast (San Francisco) didn't have. They new what they were doing as a group. You will begin to appreciate this tone of voice when you listen to other old-school thrash songs on the market. New Metal embraces the vocals from Anthrax. Check them out!

As an Anthrax fan from back in the day I don't feel their music has aged as well as some of the other bands of that era. However back in the 80-90's they were right up there. Having watched them live several times during both the Joey and John era's one thing that always stood out was how energetic they were on stage. They really matched and increased the energy of the crowd and delivered great shows. I was lucky enough to meet the band at a signing event for the "Stomp 442" album release and although I only spent a few minutes with them they genuinely seemed like really decent guys.

Good to see you gave Anthrax another "chance". Remember, this album and the song was released in 1987, thats thirty years ago!!!! Their sound right here was/is reminiscent of that period in thrash and metal in general. They were and still are very socially aware but can have fun too. IMHO its hard to fault any release of theirs and they have absolutely earnt and deserve their place in thrash and metal history.

This was early anthrax and Joeys voice matured a lot over the years. Some of their new stuff when Joey came back is much better cause his voice grew over time. I like the John Bush era as well.

Madhouse is a much safer introduction to Anthrax in my opinion. A little catchier and quite as lightning fast, aggressive and in-your-face. And Joey, I think sounds a bit more accessible on that track as well as most of the tracks from Spreading the Disease

I wasn't into Anthrax at first but I started getting more into them the more I listened and eventually I listened to them like every day, something you should know is they are a live band; the energy in the room when I saw them live was insane and the mosh pits we're wild. Also most drummers appreciate Anthrax because Charlie Benante is a drumming god, his style fits the band perfectly and he is pretty technical. That being said, Joey Belladonna has a very unique voice, I think it fits the band well and I would not say his vocals are flat at all, he is a little on the higher end, but he covers a wide vocal spectrum. Everyone should listen to this band more they are super creative and unique. Of course among the living is they're most famous album but give fistful of metal a listen as well as spreading the disease. Most people could definitely appreciate them.

Hey guys... Great job breaking it down As Always. I grew up with these guys. Interesting facts you may not know. 1. Anthrax & Public Enemy attempted the First Ever Metal/Hip-Hop cross over in the 80's with "feel the Noise." 2. Did a spoof 80's rap song also; "I Am The Man." That i think you'd find entertaining.

Stefan S The whole album is incredible but I doubt they will listen to the whole thing in one video. I'd suggest that they listen to the title track because I'm sure Ryan would love the transitions haha. Also imo the title track is the most musically diverse song on the album and will be the most intriguing for them to hear, other than Call of Ktulu or Fade to Black. With that being said... if they were to react to an instrumental I would prefer them to check out Orion before Ktulu

The reason the song sounds the way it does is because Anhrax started out as a thrash band like early Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth. So speed was the key. They were trying to appeal to kids like them. The song also got played on MTV. Many of us metal heads read lyrics too and appreciated the lyricism. And many of us older ones grew up on Sabbath and Purple. (War Pigs and Child in time)

Nick P If they did something "newer" I'd choose Hordes of Chaos for them. Also, I don't really listen to their experimental albums of the 90's, except for one song. They would like Phobia, who doesn't?
@nickp3949
@nickp3949 6 жыл бұрын
Some of their 90's stuff is actually pretty good, it's just not really thrash. But I think they had a better 90's period than most thrash bands, not as good as Megadeth's 90s (because of Countdown and Youthanasia), but still good. Yeah Phobia is great, Stronger Than Before, Celestial Deliverance, Renewal, The Golden Age, they had some good stuff. But the albums as a whole are kinda "meh".

To answer your question, I started listening to Anthrax as a pre-teen in the late-80s. I didn't gravitate towards them because of their lyrics, but over time their lyrics had a huge impact on my worldview. Most of their album Persistence of Time, which include some really power statements against racism and narrow-minded nationalism, was huge for me.

You guys should check out the song "Only" from when Anthrax had another lead singer, John Bush, who fronted the band for like 15 years. Back when this music was coming out, most of us buying it would sit down with it day one with the jacket/lyrics in hand the first time through. I know I and all my friends did it that way, because more often than not the thrash bands were making real statements with their lyrics. Sometimes those statements weren't about real issues, but they might apply to real issues. It was a different world then than it is now. Now people see music as background, not to really be paid attention to for the most part. Back then, if you were in on music, you were IN on music.

You mentioned the lead singer - Joey Belladonna - he's a Native American, so as you can imagine this song is really personal. AND YES!!! The lyrics are always a large part of metal music in the mid to late 80s (when this was made). And it's usually the public at larges' idea that metal is just about getting pumped and making noise. Sure that's some of it, but most kids that grew up in the 80s metal community were outsiders that were very introspective, so, yes lyrics was a HUGE thing. Oh, and "Indians" came before the collaboration with Public Enemy. And these guys were all about 19 - 21 when they wrote this.

Anthrax recorded with UTFO of Roxanne fame,WAY before the metal/rap thing was popular. They did a track called "Lethal" and they actually lost fans because of it. But they saw it as a cleansing. They were getting rid of the fans they didn't want anyway. You have to respect something like that. It's a great track, it appeared on utfo's album and anthrax's ep called Armed and Dangerous.

For your question, as a fan, when I bought the album, I'd listen to the album straight through first, not look at the lyrics, just hear the music and vocals. Second time through, I'd have the lyrics out and I'd read them as I was listening. I wanted that first listen to be just the music. Now time for you guys to be brave and be free thinkers. Be the first of the reaction guys I've followed to listen to a John Bush Anthrax song. No one has done it that I have seen. Anthrax changed singers in the early 90s. Check out Only, Room For One More, Black Lodge, Random Acts of Senseless Violence, Fueled, Crush, Inside Out (studio version has Dimebag Darrel playing lead guitar), What Doesn't Die, Superhero, Safe Home, Nobody Knows Anything. All good John Bush era songs. Only, Fueled, and Inside Out would probably be the ones you would actually like the best. I'm basing this off of what I've watched from your reaction videos about what you like and don't like about Anthrax. Not basing off of what is most popular, because, as my favorite free thinking teacher in school growing up said, "what's popular isn't always what's right, and what's right isn't always what's popular." Was on his wall in his classroom. Don't go with what's been popular with Madhouse, and Joey era songs. You don't like his studio vocals.

The music is more dynamic. The songs you gentlemen picked out was the early era of anthrax back when they were in their early 20's/late teens.
