In this video, Adam introduces anti-friction bearings. He covers:
+ The function of a bearing
+ The two main categories of bearing: Hydrodynamic and Anti-friction
+ The construction of an anti-friction bearing
+ The main types of anti-friction bearing: Ball (Deep Groove Radial and Angular Contact) and Roller (Cylindrical, Needle, Tapered, and Spherical)

I'm watching these videos that are like "journal bearings suck, roller bearings all day" and this guy's just over here like "ALL BEARINGS ARE GREAT, SO MANY COOL FUNCTIONS". Love the enthusiasm. I've been reading shingley for 10 hours and these videos made it all click in 10 mins. thanks!

This is the first time I have ever heard or read them called "anti-friction" and not "ball" or "roller" bearings. Ain't all bearings supposed to be "anti-friction"? I get that it's rolling resistance vs sliding but they both are designed to minimize friction.

skoronesa It is a bit confusing but common in industry to differentiate anti friction (ball or roller bearing) and plain bearing (pin and bushing).

I'm a retired electrician and we usually changed bearings in small to 250 HP motors. Still amazed that when I started back in late 1960's most NEMA motors still either had a zerk fitting or threaded hole to install one to decrease ball bearings. Amazed how long some sealed bearings may last in motors t hug at run 24/7.

Great video! I really appreciate all your videos; you do a great job. If you don't mind, I would like to comment on a couple of things. Folks who have little or no experience have never heard the term anti-friction bearing as it has kind of become a legacy description. It is entirely accurate and acceptable, however I started using the term "rolling-element bearings" because people tend to understand that term better. Two small nit-piks: You said shielded bearings are lubed for life. That is not true. Sealed bearings are lubed for life but shields are actually installed to prevent over-greasing of the bearings. The shield is always on the side of the bearing where the grease is introduced to the bearings (shields can be removed for oil-lubed bearings). Also, angular contact bearings can be installed back-to-back, face-to-face or even tandem depending upon the application. Almost always they are installed back to back in pumps. However, face-to-face is better when misalignment is present (per SKF). Love the Chesterton 442 Split Seals on your pump!

Hey sir. I see your video is 3 years old. I don't if you're still around but I have one question. I have one pump and one pressure washer both electric, both have zerk grease fittings for the motor bearings. Some people told me not to grease those because I might cause damage. Is that true? If it's not. What kind of grease should I use?

It was proven years ago by crankshaft manufacturer SPG that a correctly designed oil fed plain bearing had less friction than a roller bearing or ball race, this related to the roller bearing crankshafts.
