The Fairey Gannet Anti-Submarine Search And Strike Airplane. Warbirds In Review Series, Live Stream. The Gannet was a dedicated anti-submarine platform primarily serving the Fleet Air Arm of the British Royal Navy during the Cold War years. She was an aircraft design originating from a 1945 British Admiralty initiative (GR.17/45) requiring an advanced, carrier-based, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platform. Both Fairey Aviation Company and Blackburn Aircraft responded with prototypes "Fairey 17" and "B-54" respectively. Both were of outwardly similar design, sporting conventional monoplane wings, stout reinforced airframes, internal bomb bays and a tricycle undercarriage. The "gannet" name was derived from the species of large seabirds common to the North Atlantic, the southern regions of Africa and the South Pacific (near Australia and New Zealand). Their predatory nature is such that they dive, at speed, upon unsuspecting prey in the water and can continue the chase of said prey while remaining submerged.
On 19 September 1949, the prototype performed its maiden flight from Aldermaston outside Reading, flown by R. G. Slate; this milestone occurred ten months ahead of Blackburn's competing prototype. While some elements of the prototype proved relatively trouble-free, such as the Double Mamba engine, several early test flights had been troubled by flight control difficulties. These issues, such as sharp trim changes, did not delay the next stage of testing, which commenced in November of that year at Fairey's White Waltham facility. On 25 November 1949, the prototype crash-landed during an unstable landing, leading to three months of repairs.
On 1 March 1950, flight testing resumed with the repaired prototype. By this point, several of the handling issues had been appropriately remedied along with several other faults, yet difficulties with holding the nosewheel up during landings remained. Two months later, sufficient progress had been made to proceed with a formal assessment by naval test pilots at RAF Boscombe Down as well as to begun preliminary carrier trials. On 19 June 1950, the prototype conducted the first deck landing by a turboprop aircraft on HMS Illustrious, piloted by Lieutenant Commander G. Callingham.
On 6 July 1950, the second prototype took to the skies, joining the flight test shortly thereafter. As a result of changes to the operational requirements, this aircraft featured numerous changes from the first prototype, such as a third canopy for an additional crew member and an extended bomb bay. To accommodate the latter, the radar randome had to be repositioned rearwards; the first prototype was modified to reflect these changes for the aerodynamic trials.

As old as it would have been at the time, the availability of the Fairey Gannet AEW.3 at the time of the Falklands conflict would have been a huge help. Even now, the Queen Elizabeth class carriers have no equivalent early warning system, and suffer hugely from the decisions made that didn't equip them for catobar aircraft. Helicopters do not have the same range and endurance.

I had made this aircraft as an Airfix model back in the late 60's but not really knowing much about it although such an unusual looking model you never forget, it is only in recent years did I find out that it had two engines, previously I had thought it was a single engine contra rotating arrangement but once I found out about the second engine I realised what a innovative design this was as not only did it have the flight characteristics of a single symmetrical powered aircraft but it also could cruise with one engine allowing for longer patrol duration.

I also made the airfix model in my younger days but eventually ended working in the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton where I got to play with a double Mamba engine which was turned into a cutaway model for display.

Small point, Abbotsinch is pronounced exactly as you would pronounce the unit of measurement. It's the old Scots version of the Gaelic word "Innis", meaning "Island". See also islands in the Firth of Forth, near Abbotsinch like Inchkeith and Inchcolm.

I've always thought the Gannet design, the detection, and the ordinance loudly said "you are going to die". Nuclear depth charges, holy smoke. The wing system is amazing.

A 'purposeful' design, not exactly pretty but menacing like Lightnings or Victors. Loved seeing them at Culdrose Air Days in the 70s. Thank you for uploading this, much appreciated.

We used to get these divert into Leeming quite regularly in the mid seventies. There is an interesting book about two Buccaneers doing a show of strength over Belize in the early seventies, and a Gannet was intercepted by an American pilot, who said when asked to confirm the sighting replied, 'I think I have just found God', when he found the aircraft flying in a figure eight pattern, with pilot in leather helmet, and reading a book.

David, perhaps you are not aware that you have options. You might want to take a look at KZfaq Premium, among the many perks, it also eliminates all ads. More of less 20% of our KZfaq users have it, and appreciate the benefits it comes with. It’s nice option that gives you a choice, unlike most other popular social platforms. By the way, you can also download an ad blocker if you really do not want to contribute to the YT community 😉 that will do as well

So why not use the Great Do 335 arrow which is reputed to be the fastest piston engine aircraft of WW2 capable of 472 mph. The Do 335 could also run on 1 engine. The Arrow was a beautiful looking aircraft but the Gannet was such an ugly aircraft, its was aptly named! Have you been close to a Gannet? Its a bit like how my dear cousins the Brits refuse to acknowledge that Hanz Von Ohain invented the Jet Engine; the He 178 Flew in August 1939......A Whittle too late got an aircraft flying in 1943! Who invented the Turbo Prop, the Helicopter, the V1, the world first Cruise missile and then the V2, and Verner Von Braun landed the men on the moon.
@Anglo_Saxon1
@Anglo_Saxon1 Жыл бұрын
That's not even funny. Also,Ohain was still at school when Whittle patented his first design in 1930 (but you probably already knew that 😉)
