Exactly, a tourist and an immigrant are NOT the same thing. Most people spend less than 2 weeks, then return to their country.

Fair enough, but lately, the majority of tourists have been behaving rowdily, and the locals have had it up to here with them. You want a country to welcome you with open arms, right? Then, treat the locals the way you want to be treated.

But all at the same time, and in the same months, causing a housing/hotel bottleneck and a hike in prices for exactly 3 months of the year, which then spews over into renting on AirBnBs (hotels too booked and expensive). The result is a puddle of shit. I live in Spain, know what this looks like. Imagine if your mortgage or rent got 3X more expensive for 3 months of the year.

I don't know what property rights are like in Spain, owners should not be forced to stop using their property however they want. Spain being a welfare state and charging so many taxes, then to keep it that way the state should have houses for the population at low cost.

Renting to tourists is part of the tourism industry.... nothing against tourists of course but if you stop renting to tourists, the tourism industry suffers as well The creation of Hotels also affects rents and price value of surrounding neighbourhoods ... you cant have your cake and eat.... im not Spanish but here in Portugal we have the exact same problem.... the bottom line is no country on earth that rely on tourism as its major or substantial economic industry, is actually a great place to live in... and what is happening to the south of Europe, is we see tourism rising and economy growths but the standards of living for people who actually live in these countries is dropping, while the cost of living has gone up substantially. To the point where that, genuine stuff and people that the tourists came here to actually experience, is disappearing because the native people are leaving the big cities and urban areas, because it has become too expensive...

I am Australian, but I love Spain and try to spend time there every other year. Barcelona is a vibrant city, but the anti-tourist thing has been around a long time, and the housing/Airbnb thing is just a pretext. I can remember going there in 1983 and seeing graffiti that said "f*** off tourists". My last time in Barcelona was in 2019 and it was more evident. So last year, when I spent seven weeks in Spain, I ignored Barcelona. I went to Cardona and Lleida in the north east instead, and also went to Zaragoza, Cuenca, Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Cordoba, Segovia, Leon, and Burgos. There are so many beautiful places and wonderful people in Spain, so if the people of Barcelona don't care for visitors it's their loss.

Clearly you do not live in a city hammered by tourism. The cost of everything goes up. We can not use our public transportation because its over run. We can't get to appointments, work, or home in a reasonable time. Restaurants and other services aren't affordable in season. The city prioritizes the industries needs to the detriment of the community. Our hospital is overwhelmed and we suffer, plus pay higher taxes to support the industry infrastructure.

Most people just want to get away on a break for one week of their miserable calendar year from working hard and paying high taxes. Im spanish, the problem arent the tourist this is a shame . However The situation in 2008 was very goood (comparing with nowadays). Im from málaga the average salary of low-medium class people in 2008 was about 1000 euros and the average rent about 300. Now the AVG salary is around 1400 but AVG rent is 1000. The situation is very sad for us but thats no the solution

If you only earn up to 2000 Euros per month, there isnt a lot left for other things. They need to build more affordable housing and change the laws that investors cant just come and take so much money for apartments. I feel the same issue is going on in Barcelona. Tourists would spend disproportionately more money in the area and take up significantly less accommodation. 1 bedroom could house hundreds of tourists a year who bring money and spend it on food, amenities, services etc. But still only occupied one bedroom. A single migrant would occupy the same space, but also occupy a job of the locals and not be spending in the area nearly as much. Also putting strain on things like the education and healthcare sectors.

many spaniards go to the north of Spain for Holydays. It´s fresh, green, not that saturated and the beaches are bigger. In fact i havent seem spaniards around the world getting drunk, pissing in the corners, puking on public street furniture and shouting loud at 3 am. Spanish presence in other places is quite discreet and quiet. Maybe some people from latin america are used bo higher volume for the music at home, but not spaniards in general.

Wrong, can't afford to take vacations. These tourist traps are great for the tourist, design to be so, expansive, excellent for the opportunist who owns but does not live in the area and terrible for the actual average citizen of these areas. They benefit very little to none. The roads and parks, for the tourist, housing, all the expensive/subpar eateries, for the tourist, etc, etc. Gaining an understanding? Nothing is black or white.

GDP growth translates to QoL improvement only if you are asset owner. Most of the people in rich welfare states are entitled and have high consumption rate (for their earning potential), and hence keeps on running on hamster wheel forever. I would love to go to Mexico City one day. I don’t know too much about Spain, but my sister went in the late 90’s for a travel abroad experience. She noticed that her Korean friend experienced a lot of racism there at that time. And also people around her and her friends kept complaining about how all Americans were fat (my sister is only 92 lbs she’s tiny). Actually she gained weight in Spain which made my mother so happy, but only momentarily as she lost it rapidly after a week back in the States. 😂

Exactly... I live in Crete and my wife earns for 40h a week job 750€ included the child bonus you get every month. Our rent is 800 for 63 sqm and our electricity bill is 50 euros a month. Now the tourists doesnt understand that because they earn 2-5k € a month and live like kings here. 1 gyros is 5 € in Chania and the quality is almost dogfood. Tragic

Unfortunately tourists will be replaced by millions of illegal immigrants, who will have to be supported by the tax Payers, the hotels and probably air bnb will be housed by them ,then your country will really suffer, as they don't go home either. hope this don't happen as Spain is a beautiful country.

@@Coconut2050ll Spain lives from tourism. After joining the EU sold its industry to Germany and degraded its agriculture to please France. If tourism is not properly managed Spain has nothing. So yes, we should blame the politicians for this mess

@@Zjr8 I get that,so as I said I'm going to listen. I understand too much immigration is damaging to any country,but tourism is one of Spain's top industries. I love going to Spain,but I also love Portugal. They're our oldest allies after all,and will undoubtedly benefit from increased tourism and not only from the UK. Unfortunately the Germans don't spend as much money as the Brits,but every little helps! Adiós amigo. 😉 Ps,calm down little man! 😁

Well it depends on what the goals are. GDP equals national strength. If a country is fine being not independent in foreign or trade policy GDP can be ignored.

GDP growth translates to QoL improvement only if you are asset owner. Most of the people in rich welfare states are entitled and have high consumption rate (for their earning potential), and hence keeps on running on hamster wheel forever. Any welfare entitlement stops or prices rise, or even if they see others prospering more, they are immediately upset. One needs to understand, why frugal and hardworking Indian and Chinese migrants perform so well in Western countries.

@@bulthaosen1169 No it does not. The only useful thing GDP shows is potential for financial gain for big fish and to mention it at rallies. GDP has thus became a target, and consequently a bad metric. If every third household started a backyard garden and feeds two neighbours and their own families (theoretically of course), GDP would plummet by 5-10% while starving children would drop to 0%. Or what about car fuel sales? They account for a massive part of the economy, but it's just a net expense for all businesses and everyday people, pollutes the environment around you, while all the money goes to fat fish in foreign tax havens leaving no jobs or technology or expertise at the source. Welfare states that provide tax paid education, healthcare etc., often have more equity in high quality of life but these sectors contribute less to GDP on paper (see extremely high US healthcare and tuition costs). Same goes for other public services and wealth like clean air, public transport and I'd wager even national defense.
