Anticholinergic drug toxicity and pharmacology is made easy using this simple trick to remember the symptoms and effects of anticholinergic toxidrome. Great for nursing, medical, and USMLE!
Most anticholinergic drugs are antimuscarinic (few act on nicotinic cholinergic receptors), and their mechanism of action involves blocking acetylcholine from binding to the cholinergic muscarinic receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Anticholinergic drug toxicity or overdose results in many sympathetic-like symptoms because the parasympathetic nervous system is blocked, leaving an unopposed sympathetic nervous system.
Anticholinergic effects can be remembered using the saying "mad as a hatter, blind as a bat, hot as a hare, dry as a bone, red as a beet".

I couldn't find anyone to explain this to me the way you did. I no longer feel like an idiot lol. Thank you, I think I have a chance now to pass my mental health nursing class. The meds are killing me.

Glad to hear it was helpful! The content can be challenging, and you are definitely not the only one to feel that way. Good luck with your nursing class!

Not a bad video. Really great graphics. However, it is best to maintain clarity about muscarinic receptors throughout the entire video. Things get really confusing when you broad brush cholinergic receptors in explaining anhidrosis.

Sorry if that caused confusion! The point that was being made is that the sweat glands are unique in that although they are part of the sympathetic nervous system, they have cholinergic receptors rather than adrenergic receptors. Should have clarified that they are specifically muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Hope that helps! 😊

Can you do a video on antibiotic toxicity, especially metronidazole toxicity. There is a whole group of people that have suffered from the toxicity long term. It looks like it blocks thiamine receptors but we are not sure how to get out of the toxicity.
