Antimatter Propulsion - Ryan Weed, CEO of Positron Dynamics

Күн бұрын

Positron Dynamics is out to make space travel to distant stars a reality using antimatter. Antimatter is the most energy-dense material known. Positrons are the easiest form of antimatter to produce. With physics that is understood today, any hopes of traveling beyond the edge of the Solar System can only be realized with antimatter. To get there, our first steps lie in Earth’s orbit.

Bear in mind whatever speed you achieve on your trip out to Proxima, you'll have to bleed off nearly all of it to even stay in the Proxima system in orbit around the primary. Which means you'll have to turn the craft around at the mid-point and start accelerating in the opposite direction (which we will refer to as "deceleration" for the purpose of this discussion). Looks like antimater propulsion gives you 6.3 trillion miles per year, or 17.2 million miles per day, or 716, 700mph. That's 40 years acceleration and rouhgly 40 years "deceleration" -- that is unless you just want to wave at the Proxima system on your way through.

Falcon heavy rocket 🚀 acceleration in orbit was roughly 61mph mph per second. Deceleration/acceleration in space should be the same if not better.

how is the thrust over weight ratio when compare to traditional hall effect thrust or other similar type of ion drive?
@matthiaspaschke1779
@matthiaspaschke1779 6 жыл бұрын
Where a hall effect thruster delivers 10 to100mN thrust you surely can divide this thrust by 1,000,000,000,000,000. The problem is, there definitely is no such radioisotope with the specified requirements. It has to produce beta(+) radiation (these particles have an energy 4000 smaller than protons or neutron) in "grain" dose size in minutes... Such thing would instantly explode with a giga bang! If you want to "create" such giga radiator it would take several mulitples of 1000 of nuclear power stations... And this material would be not stable. Its physical half-life must be in the sub-nano-seconds range. You cannot stabilize such a "beast" of a giga-rdiator.

The thrust to weight isn't so important when you're in space. The exhaust velocity is more important. I've seen a paper that postulates an engine with an exhaust velocity of 0.7 c and a thrust of 0.01 g. Both of these values are way higher than what ion/electrostatic drives are capable of. Higher thrust with lower efficiency would be possible by pumping in more matter in an 'afterburner' manner.
@KeyserX

Nice "concept talk", but the meaningful information is missing. What's the efficiency of the new positron moderator? Is it twice as efficient (meaning 0,2%)? Ten times? Also, what's the "energy density" of using an isotope for positron creation? Because taking an isotope to create a positron means you get fractions of a percent of the weight as actual antimatter. Coupled with the losses of the blackbox positron moderator, what are your calculations in terms of efficiency? Also, how do you deal with the logarithmically declining thrust from the isotope decay during flight? Will you create isotopes on the spaceship itself? If so, how much energy would that take and would it still be economical? Show us some data, or at least some maths...
@scottperry9581

KeyserX Is it normal for someone to treat a seminar as the submission of a research paper? That's a lot of details to drop on a venue full of laymen. Also I'm pretty sure that this guy is a CEO, that means this is a business seminar. If he gave out that much detail his competitors would be able to replicate it. You could always wait and look up the patents, later.

Mephilis 78 But there isn't necessarily even anything here. He could say, "we aim to have a kilo of antimatter and plans for a ship capable of containing it within 15 years" or whatever. That would be the business pitch with no complicated science. Just hearing facts about the theoretical energy density and production of antimatter is very dubious. Not to say they won't achieve something in the future, but I think if they had a more significant technical breakthrough at this point they probably would have mentioned it.

1000 years ago wind grinding grain and pots to throw out sewage was our tech level; 200 years ago, we finally figured out how to make an engine, 100 years ago, we made the first powered aircraft, 50 years ago we landed on the moon, 10 years ago we made a self-parking car, and tomorrow we'll have antimatter rockets... our rate of technological progression is exponential. If we launch a craft on a 40 year journey, it will probably be worth making sure the rocket is up-gradable mid-flight as it gets passed by successive generations where we realize we can compress antimatter, or that folding space really is the faster, safer way to travel.

This is the type of thing humanity should be focused on. If something major happens to Earth, that is game over for the human species rich, poor, evil, and good alike. More over, its not a matter of if something will happen versus when it will happen. We need to really focus on colonizing space if our species has any chance of surviving deep into the future.

What if speed is high enough that you can't even hit space stuff like asteroids and other elements that are around the ship. I think i read/watched some documentary about this, that it's possible to trespass objects if you're traveling just at the right speed. I mean, there's gotta be a way, otherwise how aliens are supposed to be fast traveling throughout space without being hit by anything in the process? (Excluding the fact of possible wormholes).

To my understanding the engine seems more like a ion reactor than anit-matter, eventually what you are throwing out is a charged particle. the anti-mater is what you are using to generate enough energy through gama rays to charge the particle. and that part you can do any which ways as you have a radioactive material on board. instead of anti-matter you may also use a standard nuclear reactor for the purpose. My knowledge in this area is limited but that's what it seems to me.

Couldn't one position a number of such positron emitters on the way to Alpha Centauri, similarly like you have gas stations along highways, the positrons of which then would be trapped by a rocket, as fuel? May that enable you to reach Alpha Centauri even more quickly than in 40 years?

It’s super easy to travel to a distant star. You just have to bombard a stable version of element 115 and transmute it to 116 to create antimatter. That will give you all the electricity to power your ship, it will also allow you to access the gravity A wave which will allow you to bend space-time. We have this technology on earth.. it negates all inertia and time dilation due to being inside your own gravitational envelope.

For a 100 tonne rocket you would need to eject a mass of 1 kg/sec at a speed of 1000 km/sec to achieve a 1 g acceleration, this would take you to 10% of light speed in 35 days, BUT you would have needed over 3,000 tonnes of particles to have been ejected (and if you plan a return trip it will be 4 times as much).

I don't think your cargo contains propellent if you are using anti-matter, or some type of anti-matter conversion engine.

Propellant is not cargo. You are converting mass to energy the mass that has to be accelerated until used.

The problem would be how we get something large enough off the planet to start with. The ISS was suppose to be a building block, to add to, to make larger as needed. Yet, I haven’t heard of enlarging it. We need to look at building a permanent facility (conquering the radiation issues on man) that will allow us to build large ships in space to utilize these power sources as to explore.
