About boots: it's quite important that boots protect ankle joint. Literally any crash - even 0 km/h - most likely you'll hit or grind ankle joint. Once I rode my scooter instead of a bike and thought as my feet are behind the plastic the casual sneakers will do. Fell on 10 km/h, hit ankle joint, limped for 3 weeks.

This! I was pushing my bike inside the building once, due to weather. I slipped and my foot and ankle got caught between a rock (small flower area made of stone in the floor at the entrance) and a 200 kg bike. The boot protected my ankle. The story gets worse after but I'll save it for another time!

Yeah absolutely, after a helmet, actual bike footwear are a must. Most injuries happen to the extremities, protecting those with boots and gloves makes the most sense. No regular sneakers, please.

@@paapali actually, i meant just "boots that will protect ankle", not necessary motorcycle boots but it can be some builder's boot or army boots. I bought my first motorcycle boots only after 10 years of riding (all the other equip i 've got from year 1) - because I did'nt like the protection in the most of motorcycle boots I had seen and those that i liked cost like half of my motorcycle ) So i used sturdy thick leather army boots.

AGV K3, I came off the road in the Lake District (UK), went over the handlebars and fell about 20ft. 279kg of BMW r1150rs landed on me. My AGV was broken, but saved my head and a set of Arlen Ness leathers meant I only had a couple of broken ribs. It's worth getting reasonable protection, it really can save your life.

All advice here is great, beginners need to know which stuff is worth getting in order to avoid some low quality fake stuff. I just would like to stress one thing about moto shoes/boots: you HAVE TO get dedicated EU approved motorcycling footwear because it's very probably beginners will land their bike on one of their ankles in the first couple of riding seasons. Even the cheapest moto shoes are safe enough for slow speeds in town. My most significant bike accident was with my bike landing on my left ankle going around at 10 kmph. All I got was pain - no broken ankles.

If you want affordable riding gear, buy used stuff on sides like craigslist and eBay. Esp. jackets and pants. You can just wash them in the mashine and they are good to go. I even bought two leather suits, but got them professionally cleaned at my local bike store. With cleaning they cost both around 400€, instead of >1200€ new. You could by boots, but boots need to be desinfected. Which is easy. You can buy these shoe bombs for work shoes. Put one in a shoe and the shoe in a closed plastic bag. After a day or so, they are 99% steril. You can get a whole set of brand items in good conditions (jacket, pants, boots, gloves) for under 200€. Just don't buy your helmet used. You never know if these helmets are still save to use. Also, riding shoes that protect your ankle are the most important part, after your helmet.

Best way to save $$ on gear especially for a beginner is to buy used jacket, boots, and pants. You’ll be surprised on great quality gear that’s barely used on FB market/ebay for a fraction of the price. I would only buy helmets from reputable brands/stores since that’s the most important protective gear to have imo

I strongly believe non-motorcycle lace up high top shoes are totally inappropriate when riding. The issue is not just armor/protection in a boot but also about supporting the foot and ankle and not being ripped off your foot during the slide. My son-in-law was wearing leather 'hipster' lace up above the ankle high footwear and went down at about 30-35 mph on asphalt and not only did he trash his ankle requiring surgery and a few metal pins but also suffered serious lacerations because the boot was ripped completely off his foot. The boot was still laced up when we picked up the evidence bag of bits and pieces from the police.

I like your demonstration, it's clear and simple. I would like to see a video that is dedicated to helmets because there isn't much about it on the web. Sometimes sperge from revzilla can make it clear to a certain degree. Categorizing internal head shape in to two categories. One is arai head shape and the second shoe head shape because not everyone have access to try them all. Also, some helmets I wear don't have enough chin area and that's important too. I don't know the best way to do it, it's either going to the shop or doing it at home.

I bought my first motorcycle last year. The gear I bought to ride with is a LS2 Strobe Helmet, Cortech Chicane Jacket, Cortech Sonic-Flo Gloves and TCX Street 3 shoes. I don't mind the helmet, but I do want to get something a bit more aerodynamic or something because at highway speeds I kinda turn into a bobblehead. I don't know if it's considered a safety thing, but I would recommend people to get a Pinlock for their visor if one is available for it. I love not having to worry about it fogging up.

Icon has a few summer jackets around that $175-$200 price range and they always include full D3O armor, elbows shoulder and back, from what I've seen. You can also often pick these up used and most people will sell the armor with the jacket since they come that way. (if anyone browsing doesn't like the idea of buying the armor separately). They may not have as many nice color options though, mostly black or white and sometimes high vis.

Try marketplace, except for your helmet, as some people seem to want to change their gear every year. If you want new from a shop wait until the new stock comes in then they will usually sell the old stock for a lot less. They are new items but most shops will discount them by quite a lot just to clear their shelves. I saved over $200 on an Airoh full face doing that.

Off topic. :))

Thanks for posting, it's a useful video for anyone just starting out. If I could mention one point. In Europe and the UK, "Ladies' Helmets" and "Mens' Helmets" are different. "Ladies" need more protection from injuries caused by the weight of the helmet itself. The female neck and spine is NOT a smaller version of the Male neck and spine. It is mechanically different and much lighter in most cases. Very few manufacturers go the extra mile, but some of the "best makes," do certificate "ladies" versions as opposed to unisex ones. I've looked at the research and it does make a difference to reducing injuries to ladies necks and spine. Anyway, ride safe!

Never thought I'd be disappointed in one of your videos, but I'm disappointed in this one. If shoes aren't designed for motorcycle riding, they should never be worn for riding. I'm shocked that you included those cheap fashion boots in a beginner gear recommendation video. Do you have any idea how those shoes would hold up in a crash or slide? No, because they've never been tested for that usage. They certainly weren't designed or built to withstand pavement abrasion or crushing forces. I can't understand how the convenience of the high heel outweighs safety. 30% of all non-fatal motorcycle injuries happen to legs and feet. Why would you take a chance? Why would you present this as an option to beginners?

@LzyCube "depends on how safe you are riding" sounds kinda crazy. You dont plan accidents. Know one wakes up and says "todays a good day for a accident i will drive extra safe". Not trying to give anyone a hard time but imagine how much $ you could loose in medical bills and missing work if you hurt/brake your foot from riding. Investing a little bit in a decent pair of riding boots could stop that, not to mention possibility stopping irreversible damage. Again i hate to be that guy and we cant spend our lives worrying about everything but imagine the people who didnt wear riding boots who wish they could go back and have bought some.
