On todays Episode of Wisconsin Fisherman I broke out the two old rods I got from a garage sale a few years back. I told the ladies that I'd do a video fishing with them, hopefully they are watching! I believe they said it was their dads old gear. They even had some extra spools filled with line! It was a cool experience learning the different feeling of the old rods. I'm sure they have seen many fish in their days! I might break them out a gain and really put them to the test with some largemouth.
Thanks for watching!
I Really Hope you Enjoyed

I have several Mitchell 300's of my dads and a 301 of my moms from back in the 60s. They are easy to fish with. I also have a few reels of my grandpa's. Try using a reel that only has a bait clicker . No anti reverse, no drag no nothing. I use them to fish for crappie bucause I can't cast them. One is even on an old steel rod. Don't use that one if it is stormy. Great video.

Kyle, if you only paid $3 for an old Mitchel Garcia you got a bargain. I bought a 300X in the 80’s and it’s still my primary northern reel. I also found my Dad’s 300 from the 50’s and use it on one of my bass rods. Those reels looked like they are from the 60’s. Thanks for the video.

Grew up fishing with these same model Mitchells in the late 70's and early 80's...I guess that makes a antique as well, lol. Great video, brings back alot of memories of days past. Amazing how much equipment has changed thru the decades.

I still fish with the Mitchell 307 (left-handed) that my mom bought me for my 15th birthday in 1967. However, I have made a couple of concessions to modernity by using a graphite rod and braided line. I removed the bail and the clockwise rotation suits my left-handed technique perfectly! I seem to catch as many fish as anyone else.

The reels might be a few decades older than the spools. Mitchell hardly changed the design of the spools for the 300-type reels during the time they were manufactured, so a spool made in the 80s can fit perfectly on a reel that was made in the 50s and vice versa. The spool with the 4 wing drag knob that was on the reel at around 2:30 is definitely from the 50s or 60s, and might be the one that was originally supplied with that reel.

Well that was a fun little challenge! I love those bendy rods for when I'm panfishing just over the side of the boat. It shows the bite well. As for the reels, hey I dare anyone to keep a reel from stuff made today and keep it for 50 years and see if it still works! Kyle, I don't know how old you'll be in 50 years, probably in your 80's, but go ahead, take that challenge!

All I use is "old" stuff. I've got five rods rigged up with Mitchell 300's from 1953, 1955, 1958, 1962, and 1971. I have another rigged up with a Heddon 282 from the mid 1970's, another with a Shakespeare spinning reel also from the mid '70s. I've also got a Northern pike rig set up with a Mitchell 306 from 1958. A majority of my rods are Garcia Conolon's from the 60's and 70's.

I've got a Mitchell 306 on a Catfish rod that I use to fish big dead baits for pike, that reel has winched in alot of big pike. Also have some 300's, a couple Dam Quicks, and some old Daiwa's. Other than the weight the Daiwa's almost perform like a modern reel, but my favorite rig is a 9.5' steelhead rod with a Mitchell 400 on it. I use that rod from shore on the way home from work 2-4x a week all summer, couldnt even guess at how many pike and walleye that rig catches every season.

I have a collection of over 260 vintage reels all of which were manufactured before 1980. Your Mitchell 330 is called an “Ottomatic.” I have 56 French Mitchells. These reels are all I use. - Chris

I love those old Mitchell reels. They are so well built and sturdy. I have several and they are my everyday users. I also have a small collection of older rods… I am not a fan of them. Other than the cork handles, the old glass rods are way too wobbly for me. The Mitchell that you showed without a number is a quite old Mitchell 300, probably from the 50’s. They didn’t put the reel numbers on that series at that time. Any of the older Mitchell reels without “Garcia” on them are likely from the late 50’s or earlier I believe. Enjoyed your video - stay safe out there 🎣

Any idea where to find a vintage rod tip for the ocean city by Walker international? It's the 5'1 medium heavy. I bought a gamefish medium heavy rod with a penn peer 209 or 207 along with a ocean city rod and a old Kmart 207 or 209 reel for 31 dollars. Only thing wrong is the rod tip on the ocean city rod and the Kmart reel has some messed up internals that slip under pressure

The Mitchell 330 was made in the 50s, don't go by the sticker the previous 9wner put on the spool when he changed pine, those stickers do not come with the reel

Hahaha "If you don't think these are old,you might be old" We used them fancy long casting reels in high school...A big step up from the level wind Shakespeare's that didn't have the free spooling option(the crank turned backwards as you let line out) dad bought us.

The Mitchell real was a good real. We called them coffee grinders from the sound. Look for a Zebco Cardinal reel. They were heavy duty. Also a Lews Speed Stick.

I still use some old Mitchell 300's pretty regularly, especially for shore fishing where they are likely to get dunked and banged around. Every year they catch a dozen or so pike in the 36-40" range, last year I caught a chunky 42" pike on 10lb line... so they will for sure handle any largemouth you can find. With the backwards line lay you need to feather it a little different, and if you keep a fair bit of grease on the AR they will be much more quiet.
@tango-bravo
@tango-bravo 10 ай бұрын
Yeah my 300’s AR is pretty loud unless it’s well greased. Every year you gotta give ‘em a dallop and they will be fine
