Hi all, this is my first video, so please, do not be too harsh to me (but constructive criticism is always appreciated).
I bought these two hand saws for as less as £1 on Facebook Marketplace. The owner decided to get rid of them because was clearing out his garage from unused items. Thanks to him, I have become owner of two pieces of history. According to my research in internet one of them is Disston (1914-1928) unknow D model as etching is barely visible, and second one is Spear & Jackson probably from or before WWI times.
Help with classification will be much appreciated.
Durring disassembling process I had to cut through head of one button in S&J saw as I was unable to unscrew it. I made a drive in that place instead.
To prevent wood and keep its oryginal color, I have decided to use wax for preservation.
Remember to use gloves and safety glasses when working in workshop!
Hope you will enjoy my video! Any questions or sugestions are always welcome.

Next time you have a saw screw stuck, don't file into it, use 5 minute epoxy to glue a stick of hard wood scrap to it, you'll be able to hold it and keep it from spinning and unscrew the screw portion. I do this all the time. I have also had good luck with soaking the wood handle in warm water which makes the wood swell around the nut and keeps it from spinning, spray the screw end with WD and it should spin right out. The only drawback with using the water method is that now you have to dry the handle slowly to keep it from splitting. The 5 min epoxy comes right off with a bit of heat and you don't destroy the nut or file into the wood handle.

To fill holes and gouges in wood, make up some shellac and put a drop in the hole and sand the spot so the sawdust is deposited in the depression; may need several attempts to fill to the surface. The epoxy will always show. If the depression is a dent, put water on the dent until it wont take any more water; take a clothes iron and a wet rag and iron the dent out. The steam from the heat will swell the wood fibers back to the surface.

So I'm fairly confident that I saw the matching saw for the Disston on Antiques Roadshow- the initials were exactly the same. They belonged to a young Adolf Hitler when he had an ill-fated stint as a cabinet maker. It left him a jaded young man and the rest is history. The appraiser said that the matching saw would be worth millions in its original condition to the right collector. I shudder to think how much money was lost by restoring this saw.

I'd love if you'd talk about what you find, or why you're doing things the way you're doing them. Having videos like this play in the background while I'm at work is wonderful, but sometimes I have to listen rather than watch. Fun project, though!

Thanks for kind words. Unfortunately English in not my first language so I rather use subtitles (easier way to build thoughts and use specialised language). Maybe one day ;)

@@PMMetaldetecting it doesn't need to be in English! Especially here in the United States, we could use a little exposure to other languages. Did you know that only 20% of Americans are bilingual, and the majority of them speak Spanish as their first language?

I would have left the initials and scars in the handles, nor would I file the screws. Why didn’t you sharpen the saws after all that restorative work at least they would be usable.

Much more could have been done to avoid cutting the screwhead. Too much sanding and removal of original protection. Sanding marks and filling holes, why, pointless, loss of age, marks and heritage, cleaning only would have been better. Then protect with oil. Your beeswax will be no substitute for original, whatever that was. Regardless, great video, I have s&j saw to do too. Interesting.

@@PMMetaldetecting thats why I was watching it. I take the heritage viewpoint, let the age show and only do enough to make it last. I took lots from it, very educational. I could have worded my comments so less negative, apologies for offence caused by them.

@@seadog158 the thinking is to have an honest repair or refurbishment. The state the object is in should be left for all to see, or it should show its age. After all we are just Stewarts/caretakers of the objects for future generations.

@@seadog158 some of the buildings in Europe can't be repaired, loss of skills, materials and high cost means they have had to think of other ways. So they use lego in the repair, looksnrw and honest.
