In today's video I talk about all things you should NOT do in Spain. Yes, some are more specific to some regions but most apply to everywhere in Spain. These could be real culture shocks if you are not prepared. If you want to blend in and feel more integrated in Spain you should consider all these possible mistakes you might make. Watch my video and comment if you already learned some of those by experience :)

A Spaniard here. - Coffe. Nailed it. - Hours: Nailed it. - Late: If you are meeting in a public place be on time. If you are visiting somebody's home never ever arrive before and a bit , just a bit after will be totally acceptable. I'd say 5, 10 minutes tops but definitely not 30 min. Arriving just on the dot feels a bit creepy, like you were waiting outside looking at your watch doing a countdown to ring the bell. - Drinking: we drink low % alcohol like wine and beer sort of as a soft drink rather than "alcohol". We don't drink it to get drunk. - Don't generalize: true anywhere in the world. - Celebrity names: kind of true. Reason being many of us don't speak English. Gradually changing. - Paella: heavy dishes need a long digestion. Our main meal is lunch time. Since we have dinner late, you'd go to bed feeling stuffed. Not good.

@@morganmadison366 Specialy in Valencia we have a lot more lunch times: 7-8am Desayuno (early breakfast), usually a coffe and a toast. 11am Almuerzo (breakfast), usually a bocadillo and is more typical in Valencia than in other areas, 14pm Comida (lunch), the paella one or arroz al horno or any big lunch you prefer, 17h merienda (Snack) another little bocadillo, sandwich... something little and 21h cena (dinner), the second big lunch of the day and as Antoanetta said: NEVER PAELLA 🤣 Pizza, hamburguer, meat, fish.. all is allowed minus rice or pasta. In all of them except early breakfast you are allowed to drink beer 🤣 Most times a lot of them (including early breackfast) ends with a Carajillo (coffee with a touch of high grade alcohol) but not all people take this.

Thank you for this fun video ! I am amazed by the amount of Americans I observe who just start ordering what they want in English without even checking if the barista or sales person understands English (often they do not understand) as if they are in the United States. Seriously, they don't even bother to say hello in Spanish. They walk in and say "Hi, can I get a latte with lowfat milk, some cinnamon and some...." while the barista just stares at them nodding their head.Cringe. My Spanish isn't great, but I do my best. Sometimes I struggle a bit in Spanish and then the sales people who do know English start speaking to me in English but I continue to try in Spanish because my plan is to live here and be able to speak to people in their language. One time, I barely opened my mouth and the waiter asked "where are you from?"., I said "Belgium" and he replied "so English is good for you then" and he continued in Englsih -LOL! I'm surprised that it is filled with far more tourists and expats than I expected it would be. I absolutely agree that the green spaces here are amazing, it's one of my favourite aspects so far. I love sitting on a bench in the shade, listening to the various types of birds, feeling the breeze. I didn't expect it to be so hot and humid in June, but from what Valencianos have told me, they don't seem to be used to it being so hot and humid in June either. But luckily there is a lot of shade to be found and there is almost always a refreshing breeze. I love this city, it's beautiful, the people are friendly, the prices are reasonable...

One time, after a five hour drive along the small coastal roads from Torrevieja to Valencia, and two hours walking in Turia Park, being 4pm in August and having not had lunch, we found a restaurant where the guys were happy to make us paella, and with a cold beer we were so happy, it was so delicious and we were ready for our highway drive back to Torrevieja.

I have lived almost all my life in Valencia, and I have never heard Michael Jackson called "Miguel Jackson". Elon Musk is usually pronounced the same as in English. It's possible that some older people, not tech-savvy, might mispronounce Musk, but it's not the norm. There are some quite blunt differences in some customs, depending on the region you live in, and that influences meal times among other things. Although abroad Spain is seen as a uniform nation, it is more like several nations rolled into one. Flamenco is not typical of Spain, but of Andalusia. You will see tablaos flamencos in places like Valencia, but partly as a demand for tourists mainly. The demand generates the business. But it is as absurd as going to New York expecting to find a country music concert as if it were typical of New York.

The local traditions are sacred. Punctuality is greatly appreciated but there is some leeway regarding arrival time... 10 minutes lateness is fine, otherwise it is advisable to give the person a ring or people you are about to meet. Arriving +20 minutes late is neither kind nor respectful, although it may happen every now and then, especially in major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, etc.

So what you are saying completely contradicts Antoanetta, then? 15 minutes is the rule I do know from Nordics and Germans.

So what you are saying contradicts what Spaniards would tell you. I rarely arrive more than 5 minutes late or ring if I am going to be late for any reason, so do most of my friends. ... Your statement feels like .... kind of foreign national knowing local traditions better than locals or as some Spaniards would put it "ser mas papista que el Papa". Local traditions are very diverse in Spain from the North to the South, from the East to the West. Get used to it or you will be codenmed to replicate national-flag stereotypes or perhaps become a internet troll.

Well looks like I already made this big food faux pas in Valencia as a Tourist 3yrs ago when I had paella for dinner in a Restaurant (and it was late, 9pm. think it took a good 35 minutes + before it was ready). I grew up on Jamaican Rice & Peas so paella is not a heavy dish for me but it’s the closest Spanish meal that most meat eating West Indians will appreciate 🍽️

I've never heard anyone saying Miguel Jackson ever. And With Elon Musk, some people say M(uh)sk, but most times, and the regular thing is to pronounce M(ah)sk. And I am literally fed up about hearing of arriving late in Spain is normal. It is not, at least in Catalonia where I am from. You must be punctual to your job or any kind of appointments, even I must say, you must arrive 10 minuts earlier for example to the doctor, bank, job, cinema, etc. And with friends, sorry, but If I say "come at 20h" I expect them to come between 19:50 and 20:10. 10 minuts earlier or late it's OK but nothing else. Being late in my surroundings and with my relatives and friends is considered rude and very disrespectful.

When my husband and I went to Norway last year for three months I had to make sure I was on time or early if we were invited somewhere. Normal for us is to start our parties is within half an hour up to an hour after it has been planned. My familia is Sephardic Jew and we have been in the USA since the 1492 and the 1500's.

The whole language question can be fraught with political implications and not necessarily linguistic considerations. Quite obviously, Euskara is not a Romance language, but most of the languages in Spain are and the linguistic differences between them are not as sharp as that between Basque and the other languages. Probably best to avoid the subject except with those who are willing to discuss the topic from a scientific point of view.

Never expect anything to get done quickly. Assume flies have been on every pre prepared tapa you see. Expect a phone call from the police telling you that you have been denounced by a local, for something you havent done. Youre guilty until proved innocent. Everyone watches Real Madrid or Barcelona. No other teams exist. Expect the driver behind you to be about 3 feet from your car whilst travelling at 70 mph. Drive on the outside lane only around a roundabout. The inside lane is only for people who are lost and drive round and round in a circle. Never expect life to be fair as a foreigner living in Spain. Youre not Spanish, never will be, and will be treated as such. Get over it.
