During the 2004 NFL offseason, the New York Jets thought for sure that they had a deal done with former Buffalo Bills cornerback Antoine Winfield, with ESPN reporting that the two sides agreed, with Winfield canceling visits with other teams, and with the Jets scheduling a press conference to announce his arrival. However, to the shock of everyone, he never signed with the Jets, and went to the Minnesota Vikings instead. This is the story behind one of the craziest free agent sagas in Jets history

And his son is a STUD jack-of-all trades defensive back. He can play BOTH safety positions and either side of the field as a corner. He can rush the passer, too. He is the second coming of Ronde Barber.

Too bad his skills will sadly get entirely wasted, with, a Tampa Bay team that, wasn't, good enough, last, year, and, will, only, continue to decline, far too many people have chosen to completely ignore the, first, half of their Playoff Game, against, the Rams, only, selectively remembering the Rams doing everything in their power to, lose, (but, winning, anyway), Tampa Bay fan, btw.

I’m a Vikings fan, I don’t remember this story but I certainly remember Antoine. And you’re right he’s absolutely a team legend. Right up there with Paul Krause and Harrison as some of our best dbs ever. I wanted jr too in the draft a couple years ago when he went to my hometown tampa bay. Dude was the best open field tackler I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t think I ever saw him miss a tackle. Literally. Like ever.
@gluserty
@gluserty 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, and his tackling was no small thing and always sure. I think Antoine Winfield might be one of the NFL's greatest tacklers in general, regardless of position. I also recall his Bills career, and it was the same excellence there. You didn't have to worry about Antoine Winfield, he had it covered.

I'm from Akron, Ohio which is where Winfield's from. I'm also a Minnesota VIKING'S fan, he's 1 of my favorite all-time player's. I'm fortunate enough to have watched him play High School Football for Akron Garfield he was a stud. Watched him play many games for The Ohio State Buckeye's and then countless games for the VIKING'S where he became 1 of the defensive players in the league. He should get into the Pro Football HOF.

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made multiple videos about Nate Burleson as an announcer. As a player he left the Vikings to sign with his hometown Seahawks in the 2006 offseason after the Seahawks put a “Poison Pill” in his contract. This was after the Vikings did the same thing to the Seahawks in earlier in that offseason with Steve Hutchinson.

There is a lack of reporting here that I can recall, but can't find. Years later, I saw a Star Tribune article that stated that he signed because his wife wanted to not live in NY and I think it was the education system she wanted in a place like Minnesota. Could be wrong in a part but she just didn't want the family to be raised in the area and probably not the limelight.

@@matthewdaley746 No, he doesn't. Stop acting as if he's a scrub. The Bucs wouldn't do as well as they did on defense without him, especially when you take the season-long myriad of injuries to the secondary in the 2021-22 season into account. After Vita Vea, he's easily one of the Bucs' most important defensive players.

@@matthewdaley746 No less an authority than Pro Football Focus named Winfield to its 1st team, so I'm not buying what you're selling about him. As for the offensive line, losing Ali Marpet and Alex Cappa hurts, but the Bucs traded for Shaq Mason and kept Aaron Stinnie. Also, Wirfs should be ready to go for training camp with 6+ months to recover. It's not as if he, say, tore his ACL or something like that. Also, given that Tom Brady's back and how weak the NFC is aside from a few other teams, how the blue hell are you claiming the Bucs are gonna return to their 2019 form? They don't have a credible challenger in the NFC South in the 2022-23 season as things stand right now.
