Antonelli's back hand setup is good. Some times you have to go with left foot up to field ground balls on your back hand; specially those hit hard to the sides where you have no choice but to move as quick as you can crossing over your foot and try to get there. Then take an extra step or two to reset your feet and throw OR jump and throw on the air; it really depends on the player athleticism. In other occasions, if you have time, you can set up with left foot back and right foot up to receive the ball; that is if the location and speed of the ball allows you to set up like that. That is also a good way to fielding ground balls back handed. So both ways work depending on a particular situation.

my son is 12 and just started playing 2nd base full time last year. He was playing dixie youth and just moved up to Pony league (13-16 yrs old) for summer ball which i was almost certain they would move him to the outfield since he was the youngest one on the team and in the league by a little over a year but they still kept him there. He absolutely loves 2nd base but I was a pitcher and centerfielder (my favorite) in my youth and in school so i wasn't sure the proper way to teach him the right way to play infield with the proper techniques so i use your videos as a go-to for him. Thanks for making these and keep up the good work.

i have switched my feet on taking a backhand ground ball i through right handed so i put my right knee up and my left down i think its more beneficial that way your knee doesn't get in the way and it's easier to get up and through quickly

I was wondering what your thought about the feet when fielding backhands? I was taught to have the glove in front of the right foot this keeping the ball from going all the way in the outfield if not fielded clean. However it seems most kids naturally do the opposite. I think both ways should be learned however I want my younger kids to have the best basic fundamentals possible.

Do you recommend 2 fingers in the pinky as a middle infielder? I hear about a lot of people doing it
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 8 жыл бұрын
+TheSavior3210 I never used it, but some feel it closes the pocket more naturally. I've seen more outfielders and third basemen use it than middle infielders. Most middle guys are deflecting the ball outside the pocket, so it's probably used least by middle infielders. Hope this helps!

Matt, I really want to adopt this drill. It makes so much sense. A couple of questions, how far away should the partner be, I’m guessing 10’, and approximately how long does this entire drill take? Thank you!
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! Yes about 10 feet away. We go around 15-20 reps then rest for each one. It can be done very quickly. Within a few minutes. Thanks for watching!!!

I have a few questions about deflection. I've always heard you say to field it with your index finger, whereas I've heard others say the palm. If I have my index finger out of my glove, where should I be focusing on fielding the ball in my glove? Also, do you only deflect groundballs? Or should I be trying to do this skill with throws as well?

@AntonelliBaseball

Yeah I see both. I teach to work through the ball to create a short hop, but other than that always funnel. I've made a bunch of other videos on it that really go in depth. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey Matt! I've a question, what size is the glove you are showing in the video? I use a 11.5 for second base, would you suggest me a smaller one?

why isn't the glove moving toward the ball when fielding instead of it just sitting there, waiting for the ball to enter the pocket?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 7 жыл бұрын
We teach to receive the ball not push through the ball. Allows for softer hands and easier to bring to the center of your chest after receiving. We do push through the ball if we are going to get an in between hop. We want to shorten the distance between glove and bounce. Hope his helps!
