I just saw an interview with him. He said he was invited to sing, last minute, and the personne hiring him said "don't worry about dressing up, it's going to be on the radio". So when he arrived, it was too late to change. It doesn't matter, his voice is phenomenal and his pianist was amazing, even if only wearing flip-flop! Bravo!

This is a truly timeless human being, he looks and sounds as if he just stepped down from the heavens and out of a Renaissance painting. I don’t know how to make sense of it but listening to him sing, it feels like centuries just melt away, and this raw, longing, fundamentally human emotion stretches all the way back through thousands of generations.

When I first listened to him I also got a sense of the many previous generations. I'm half Polish, in recent years I've been researching my Polish family's and country's history. Of course every nation's history is full of all kinds of events. I discovered oppression, centuries of war, heart breaking vileness, loss, heaviness. Listening to him it was as though their experiences were somehow there with him, coming through him. And it was a salve, as if their experiences and what they fought for helped bring the opportunities for living in peace, joy, and developing innate talents was realised in a great part in this young man bringing such purity, heavenly, uplifting, beautiful blessings to the world.

It's just a falsetto with disciplined air pressure control. I used to think there was some magic quality countertenors had that no other male singers had, but anybody, even a bass, can be a countertenor. I mean, I don't say that to take away from your point that it's difficult to achieve this level of virtuosity or musicality, but I really think a lot of people think the countertenor range itself is more complicated than it actually is. Too chicken to make my own recordings, but after about five months of practicing controlling my falsetto I believe I can sing competently arias written for Altos in their original pitches, and it's actually easier and less physically straining than singing in my natural register, bass.

Every time I come across this, I go down a rabbit hole of some of his best performances. (assuming of course that you believe in the bible) [Sidenote] are you one of the people who just now found out about "biblically accurate angels" from all those memes and are now trying to flaunt that knowledge on people?

FYI: Orliński put on baggy shorts and beat-up sneakers, and rolled up the sleeves of a crumpled tattersall shirt: this was radio, after all, and it was ninety degrees outside. Only when he and his pianist, Alphonse Cémin, who was in shorts and flip-flops, arrived at the recording venue-a courtyard with a small audience-did they learn that the performance was also to be streamed on Facebook Live. It was too late for Orliński to change clothes, and so he sang just as he was-unshaven, and dressed as if ready for a day of sleeping it off under the Provençal plane trees.

@@proverbs31woman14 - the same arguably goes for Jaroussky's take on this piece; there's a live recording on here somewhere (or there used to be, haven't checked in a while) that's, IMO, vastly superior to what's on his "Heroes" album. Something to do with actually performing to an audience in addition to a mic, I suppose.

Yes, you have a point there. I have performed live, and also in a recording studio, and recording in a studio, I can tell you that no matter how many times you do it, it always has a stilted awkward feel. You have a group of studio people staring at you through a booth. You usually are wearing headphones so you hear your voice in your head and it sounds off. When you perform live, it is almost always better! You get energy from the audience and you are performing for them. It's quite different.

You may not understand the libretto in Italian. You may not know anything about this character, Anastasio, in Il Guistino, or the circumstance where he sings this aria. But you felt everything you need to know in this performance, didn’t you? His undying love for his fiancée, Arianna, piercing pain and despair in his heart as he prepares for battle, fully aware that he may never see her again. In addition to his phenomenally beautiful voice, Mr. Orlinski’s ability to let us feel every minute nuance in the libretto (e.g., the way he sings/sighs the word ‘sospirero [I will sigh]’) and breathe life into the written words is nothing short of magic.

@@0ichigan06 I saw the video. It doesn't seem to be the case with mr. Handsome here. He doesn't aspirate the coloraturas, and the consonants and vowels are perfectly understandable. True, the lower notes are a bit crisp at some places, but in other cases he demonstrates power in the lows, so I assume it's a matter of attention. No light matter though, if he'd continue to neglect it now it's not gonna get any better, and true, singing operas would probably be a mistake. Although I don't understand why anyone would choose opera over ancient music. To sum up, he's definitely not Oberlin, but for now I prefer the colour of his voice over that of Oberlin, which sounds to me a bit nasal. Oh and of course let us not forget those calf muscles.

@@jaybonn5973 Most "Counter-Tenors" are actually Baritones or Tenors. They should train themselves to have strong head voices. I myself am a lyrical Baritone and can somewhat sing in counter-tenor. :)

Who is this deity you're referencing? This individual possesses an exceptional, innate talent and dedicated considerable effort to refine it. Introducing an external party would detract from the authenticity of his gift.

@@climate-civilizations the comment does not say that the singer didn’t work very hard to get this skilled. It is undeniable that the singer possesses a greater gift than most. The comment only says that God is the origin of the innate gift and rather than genetics or chance.

@@colegraywhich is objectively false. No ‘god’ gave ‘talents’. The man was born with a physical predisposition- and a mental one that was later honed- of propensity and capability for performing such music. Just like a painter isn’t a great artist for some talent that their hands innately possess, it’s always a myriad of characteristics of intelligence, like perceptiveness and the ability to learn from prior misunderstandings, that come together to form a capable and productive painter.

I keep coming back to this particular performance of this song. The thing that attracts me the most is the beauty in the simplicity of the moment; how it opens, unexpectedly, like a flower. It's mesmerizing.

And the fact that it was a spontaneous performance! For those who don't know: Jakub and the pianist were in a radio interview (and dressed for radio) when they were asked to fill in for another musician at this lunchtime concert in Aix en Provence in France. There was no time to change so they did this totally off the cuff.
