This is excellent subtly and inwardly complex Rachmaninov, great pacing avoiding rush, an intelligent measured edge throughout even with a speedy second mov, manoeuvring around the welter and various levels impressively, some wrapt thinking here, cool and unflustered, keeping the listener engaged, possessed music making; Gergiev examples the light Russian approach similar to Rozhdestvensky with Glazunov; no score. Some of the entries are undersold but this is satisfying listening.

Trajan say what you want about the USSR and communism, but their economy was stagnant yet stable and they funded the arts. After it’s collapse the economy went down the toilet and the country was basically controlled by the mafia. There were shortages in the Soviet era but in the first few years of the federation things were even worse. Learn your history; freedom of press and trade is meaningless when everything else is in shit shape.

@@seymourtrac You're both right. It was the dawn of freedom and the time of high hopes. At the same time it was a troubled time. The Soviet planned economy was in huge trouble already, but now it was completely destroyed and everything started from scratch. Inflation was insane. People's life savings became worthless overnight. Most jobs paid miniscule wages. Old people got hit hard. Others who didn't have business inclinations were in huge trouble. Factories stopped paying workers. Miners were on perpetual strikes. After shortages of the Soviet 80s one could go to a store and see everything they could imagine for sale. But few could afford it. Crime spiked out of control. In the Soviet times most cops didn't even carry firearms. In the early 90s if you opened a small business you'd be guaranteed a visit from a local gang demanding "protection" money, and there was nothing you could about it - you either pay, or your business gets burned down or worse. 1992 was a tough year.

Completely correct about the final coda, in which the timpani have the melody and key rhythmic motif, and so the tempo has to be one in which the timpanist can make these figures clear and distinct.

Origins of music unevidenced. Except it is gift to humanity from God the Creator. Music continues in heaven. Discontinues in hell. Jesus Christ came from heaven to earth for one purpose only - to die on cross for remissions of pre-existing sins of every single person and to resurrect. Jesus Christ providing forgiveness from pre-existing sins for every single person, salvation from eternity in hell and free entry to eternity in heaven for all who repent of sins in Jesus Christ. Other side of death is eternity. Eternity in hell. Or eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ. Penalty of pre-existing sins already paid by Jesus Christ on The Cross. Accept HIM. Be saved from eternal in hell. Enter heaven. Enjoy heavenly music. For free.

Sad. Music orchestra conductor turns out to be politically oriented and favored and picked by Putin to be the leading maestro of Russia. If Putin had been a better leader, Russia's glorious culture would have thrived even more, the people would have been even better cared for, and people would not be hoping to leave their own friends, families, culture, to try to look to the West to escape the poverty, oppression, and silencing of opinions that only benefit the Oligarchs and exceptionally corrupt Russia leadership. People don't want to be there. it's not the west or 'democracy' that matter - it is whether people have food on the table. Comparing Russia and China is not really logical - at least modern Chinese people, 350 millions or so have been lifted out of poverty. What has Russian done in the last 30 years under Putin's watch? People wanting to escape. And then a musical conductor sides with Putin. Boycott.
