Her voice. She's trans. I researched the back story of this song and it's incredibly sad. Whether you agree with the lifestyle, everyone deserves life.

When I first read the lyrics after I heard this on bones... I was in quite a dark period in life anyway... mourning the loss of my mother, and praying to God for her to cradle my miscarried daughter in her arms while she danced for joy on the streets of paradise..

No way... What millions of people have been trying to understand for centuries was said in 45 minutes of a tv show. Damn I love Bones. “I am a child of a man, I am a child of a woman... But more importantly I am a child of God and as I look aroud I see others like me. We don't look alike. None of us look alike. On the outside we are gay and straight, black and white, fat and thin, man and woman, saint and sinner. Should I keep going or do you guys catch my word? But inside... inside we’re all the same.”

Beautiful voice and thanks for educating us about Marsha P Johnson. We cannot make the world right - the only thing we can do is in our own life is to do what we think is right to the best of our ability.

This song is about Marsha P Johnson - which is also what "the Johnsons" represents in Antony and the Johnsons. Marsha was one of the first transgender woman and also the mother of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R) her body was found floating in the Hudson River after the 1992 Pride March and the police ruled it a suicide, but everyone who knew her knew she wasn't suicide and that's what this song is about.

I had no idea about the history of this song, I loved it since I first heard it - so much emotion. But now it also gained meaning. 'Can you see the light, at the end of the dark passageway. Take me with you toward this light into the darkness passing over the faces in the river. Hear me! I'm whispering in your ear.' Thank you Antony and solidarity with your struggle!

There is a black river It passes by my window And late at night All dolled up like Christ I walk the water Between the piers Singing Oh River of sorrow River of time River of sorrow Don't swallow this time For we all know the baby has expired Long ago she was pulled from the mire And no precious liar or well-wisher Can return the love that was stolen Oh River of sorrow River of time River of sorrow Don't swallow this time Can you see the light At the end of the dark passageway Take me with you towards the light Into the darkness passing over the faces in the river Hear me! I'm whispering in your ear! Oh River of sorrow Oh River of time River of sorrow Don't swallow this time Oh River of sorrow Oh River of time River of sorrow Don't swallow this time

When I was 20 and a social outcast, cleaning toilets in Oxford.. I Hung out with a female Greek AI student from MIT and the gay son of a Greek general.. and we saw Anthony at a theatre in Oxford I think. They had a girl who did a scissor dance (she looked like Edward scissorhands) during the breaks and this and Anthonys music.. I swear it was perfect. An amazing show. With the exception of the Shaolin monks and some Tuvan throatsingers.. nothing was able to beat this do far.

Thinking about the Orlando shooting. I've heard this song was written about Marsha P Johnson - an early LGBTQ icon who stood up at the Stonewall Riots for the rights of gay people to be free. In June of 1992 her body was pulled from the Hudson River in NYC - following a recent Pride appearance. Police ruled her death a suicide, but her closest friends claim she had complained about being recently harassed near the river and believe she was murdered because she was a non-gender conforming LGBTQ person. RIP

Grandes.

That "moron" is Antony himself directing the band because the music was recorded live with the main vocal done later as an overdub. It gives the track an intimacy as it feels like you're in the room with the band as they play the song.

The Bones episode it was featured on, was about a transgender woman. So they knew what the song was about and used it appropriately. It's a beautiful song and a sad true story. Let's not forget someone who was strong enough to stand up for what she believed in. Freedom.
