A brain zap, at least for me, is one of the scariest anxiety symptoms. For me these brain jolts felt like a strong electric charge that shot up from the back of my head and discharged in my brain. Every time this happened i would believe my brain was out for just a second. After that it left me with a kind of brain fogginess and of course in extreme panic. My mind straight went to believing that it must be a brain tumor or the onset of a stroke...

I had these for years and every time I had one I thought about brain tumors, stroke or brain aneurysm which would throw me into a full blown panic attack. I never told anyone because I thought they would think I'm a hypochondriac.

Did anyone else think they were having a seizure or something? I keep having them at night and it always hits when I’m laying down feel perfectly fine or when falling asleep. It causes immediate panic, stomach ache/nausea, dizziness and extreme fatigue and weakness. I get a migraine after. I’m going through it right now it honestly makes me feel like I’m going to die!

@@ucuniversity2869 YES, it’s so hard to remind myself that I’m a moderately healthy 18 year old and a stroke is very uncommon at this age. But then I think back to every back thing I’ve ever eaten, and that I used to be overweight and then it starts the chain of overthinking all over again. Such a weird phenomenon.

Only just started to get these this year. Been lying down (I get up for school and get everything ready and then have a nap for half an hour) and then suddenly it feels like this buzzing sound that gets slightly louder then feels like you black out. The first time it happened I thought I was having a stroke or something, it feels like a 2 second death. Glad to know others have this too.

For me it’s weird because when I’m trying to sleep a brain zap happens and then I can’t move.
@Trippyz502
@Trippyz502 3 жыл бұрын
Most likely not a brain zap. Maybe some form of sleeping paralysis if so try weed and work on your breathing when that happens to you at night. For example if you suddenly just wake up and can’t move it’s probably a case of sleeping paralysis. If so slow your thinking bc your mind will be racing...just work on your breathing if you can get ahold of your breathing your mind will gain control for some reason other cases I’ve slowed my breathing so that I can fall asleep kinda feeling like I’m dying when i do so. I wake up like 10 mins after shocked I can’t believe the amount of control is out of my hands. Life is truly a blessing much love to everyone & I hope this message reached you or helped you in sum way

I have the exact same, identical terrifying thing. They started due to constant underlying anxiety, mainly health anxiety and fear of losing a loved one. I know that they are also a common symptom during Benzo- or SSRI-medication or withdrawal. Anyway, let me describe the most horrific symptom...brain zaps or body zaps: they occur out of the blue with no apparent trigger in the outside world. I have searched for many years for a trigger but I cant find one.....many people say that coffee can trigger them or head or eye movements or gluten or dairy....but not for me, for me they seem to come random. They can occur during every moment of the day, yet more often in the evening, right before falling asleep. When they happen in the evening before sleeping, they sort of multiply, not only one or two. Sometimes I dont have them for weeks or even months, then I have them many times per day. Terrible. The only thing that helped is magnesium, omega 3, Vitamin D and B12. Plus: Musclerelaxation acc. to Jacobson, done every single day, important not to skip a day. So, how do they feel? They feel like a very sudden and strong adrenaline surge from my solar plexus area shooting up to my head. It feels like being in an elevator going down, or as if someone suddenly scares/frightens me from behind or like a falling feeling in my guts. When this adrenaline wave or surge shoots into my head, my head/brain feels shut off/shut down for a split second, as if someone dimmes the current for a split second. It feels a little bit like fainting, like being shut down for a split second, it is very brief!!! I dont feel dizzy, it is much more like fainting or being shut down for a brief moment. During this surge one ear will ring loudly for only two or three seconds, then my heart races, at times I feel shaky and sweaty or freezing and panicking. And if the surge or wave is very strong it shoots very quickly not only to my head but like an electric current to my toes or finger tips as well. These zaps can be very light or very, very strong.....the strong ones sometimes make my whole upper body jerk/jolt to the front. All of this is the most terrible thing in my whole life yet it lasts only for a second or even less than a second.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with these brain zaps. I am sure this comment will help others feel a lot more at ease. I remember during my anxiety days i couldnt realy find anything that would accurately describe this sensation. Your description is pretty much 1 to 1 how i have experienced these zaps. They are scary as hell but now that i have recovered i do not get them anymore. There might be days after a horrible nights sleep that they would come back for just a little bit but a lot less terrifying and frequent.

This comment put me so much at ease , making me feel like i’m the only one having these problems because i can’t even explain what it feels like. I totally understand the brain being shut down for a second or just the emptiness feeling throughout your body. My anxiety has caused me so many symptoms every single last one of them. They used to be scary but i got used to it , it’s kind of like a fuck this shit i’m tired of you controlling me go at it type of perspective on it now. They still get scary though , yet i try to stay positive and believe in a bright future i hope you are feeling better and i totally understand what you are going through.

Well, people with anxiety attacks have them out of the blue too, for no apparent reason. Sometimes our body concentrates too much and when you get out of that it seems to give you a jolt. I have withdrawal symptoms, from gravol and anti-anxiety medication. I was taking this anti anxiety medication because I was sick with the stomach flu and it continued and damaged my stomach so I became lactose intolerant and had bad acid reflux. This gave me chronic nausea and I turned to every option. They soon realized I don’t have anxiety (went to a therapist) and I stopped without telling my mom because I was stupid and didn’t realize it was that big of a problem. So either I have withdrawal from that or gravol, probably gravol because I feel when I take a full dose I have not zaps. I’ve stopped going “cold turkey” on gravol , that made me feel like crap so I took one and was better. Now I take halves but I still get zaps, only 2-3 hours after I took the half of gravol.

I get these too, it first happened to me in high school when I was high on weed and I was feeling really on edge in assembly/chapel. I was feeling paranoid that a teacher would notice I’m high and when I locked when contact with a teacher my head shook and I kinda passed out for a second. Since then I get them when I’m in a similar situation like a crowded room (only while seated). It’s so strange how the memory holds onto things and fears it will come back. I’m going to talk to my therapist about it and I’ll let you guys know I it’s resolved and the cause behind it.

The best way to describe it on my end is, the feeling you get when you jump into extremely cold water and it literally shocks you and makes you freeze up both mentally and physically. It’s as if my brain literally decides to lock up and freeze for a second. And it does feel like an instant jolt almost like a cold freeze of the brain. Mine is always triggered if I look side to side really quickly 👀. It’s the weirdest thing! Sometimes I get them even when I don’t forget to take my lexapro. I think other things can trigger them as well. Allergies, heightened state of awareness, and even being really tired. At least in my case

I don't consider myself an anxious person, but it's just bizarre that my thinking alone triggers these things... What makes it even weirder is the zaps began during Covid back in '20, although I did not have covid at the time. How would one even begin to explain something like this to a doctor? Very interesting comments regarding this sensation. I’ve had a vertigo attack outside a shop last April and just before I entered, without warning it was as if the building flipped upside down and I thought to myself “oh shit that’s it, I’m gone” but strangely I didn’t panic and I could see a man approaching as I lost my balance. It felt like I was in a helicopter that was losing control like you see in the movies. Spinning out of control. I held out my arm asked him to put me on the ground. Then I lay there and the store manager came out asked me if I was okay. I didn’t feel faint, I had eaten earlier, the horizon was starting to level out. I checked my own pulse, it was normal, the dizziness subsided. I stood up and the police came and quizzed me. My answers was fast and coherent. It was all over very quickly. I visited my doctor the next day, he said it was most likely vertigo. I did feel slightly ‘seasick’ after. I had my ears syringed a week later. But I stopped taking SSRI after a year in early May and that was pretty awful. Felt like my legs were trying to crack off my spine! Horrible uneasy feeling. I’ve had the zaps without the pain, usually at night when lying in bed reading or watching videos on the phone. It’s like when you get a momentary dimming of power in your house. The odd time it happens when at work or walking and the ground feels like rubber for a second or two. It’s like a super realization or awareness. A zap without pain. The body has a weird way of feeling things. I haven’t have a panic attack since January 2019, I did have ectopic beats until a month or two ago but they’re gone as I’m more relaxed now. Exercise, magnesium and good diet helps and cutting out toxic people is very important. And if you’re in doubt watch Improvement Path videos! The mind is very powerful, harness its potential and don’t be afraid of it! God bless you all! I feel like all anxiety sufferers are the best friends I’ve never had!!!

I had those for a few months every time I put my leftside of my head on my pillow. It slowly got worse. Later I got diagnosed for ADHD, they gave Adderall which made me feel like a superhuman for a few weeks with almost no side effects and then suddenly 1 day before exam when I was on Adderall, I got some intense brain zaps. Im not using any medication right now for a while and my head feels very sensitive. Like I cant wear a tight headset or those brain zaps come back. Even when trying to sleep I have issues laying down my head. I also constantly see like shooting stars/white lines randomly in my eyesight. My theory is that many of us arent breathing right. Anxiety makes people breath shallow and sometimes even forget to breath. When blood oxygen drops too much, the brain zaps might be a defensive mechanism to make us breath again. Ever noticed the first thing you do after a brain zap is to suddenly take a fast breath by opening your mouth? Atleast I do.

I've had this happen twice. The first time seemed to last 3 seconds and felt like a head full of buzzing bees. (10+ years ago) Happened recently (hence my search on YT) and lasted 2 seconds. A very weird sensation mainly at the top of my head - no movement from neck upwards. I have had anxiety this year - no doubt connected... never knew a "brain zap" was an actual thing. Buzzing bees in my head and momentary paralysis. Quite the feeling.

I get these, but I actually have had a stroke, and currently have a tiny benign hemangioma in my brain. So, I get super-panicky after one thinking it's another stroke, or a brain bleed. I know the signs of a stroke or brain bleed and it never progresses to them. It's a weird sudden sharp jolt of pain and pressure in my head that lasts a second or two and then I feel weird shifting pressure, achy, expanding, shivering, and crawling sensations inside my head. And then the panic attack is on. Shaking, nausea, crying, numbness in arms, chest tightness, imminent overwhelming feeling of "something very bad is happening", I feel like I want to get up and run away. The whole thing lasts a half hour to an hour. I usually have an annoying lingering low level headache and brain foggy feeling afterwards. I've seen specialists and had brain scans galore. And the diagnosis is panic disorder. The condition that caused the stroke is being managed, and the hemangioma is stable. So it's not neurological as in a medical emergency. Panic is so physically powerful. It can make you feel so many strange and frightening physical sensations. And in the moment? Nobody can convince you it's not a medical emergency, it just has to play out.

It is scary. I feel exactly the same way when I've had them. It usually takes me a day, sometime a little longer to feel like myself again. I’ll walk up the stairs and every time I place a foot I zap. I’m thinking it’s withdrawal from anti anxiety medications because I went cold turkey, or it’s withdrawal from gravol. I’ve been taking this drug for a while because I had a continuous stomach flu that damaged my stomach and made me lactose intolerant, so I felt really bad from both the stomach flu and lactose intolerance and acid reflux. So I stopped taking dairy and I feel so much better, and went cold turkey on gravol. News flash, that was pretty dumb of me. So I’m taking half and still experiencing zaps so I’m thinking it’s still the antidepressant/anxiety medication. If you are taking medication like that, don’t stop completely or you will feel weird

Just discovered this video. Thank goodness for this. I've been panicking for years worrying what was wrong with me. About 5 years ago these brain zaps started mainly in my sleep. It would cause a spiral, i would zap and then panic about the zap and leasing to lore zaps. It eased off for a while but since having my daughter they are constant, mainly during the day time now and not so much in my sleep anymore. I've always told my self it's not anxiety or stress because I don't actually think I am anxious or stressed but I guess my mind and body believe otherwise. I think now is the time for me to get this sorted now I think it could all be related to anxiety. Although when I try to explain this feeling to doctors they generally have no clue what I'm saying 😂

I've had this sort of thing for over a year, multiple brains scans etc. have come up empty with a reason. I was working in an extremely stressfull environment for over 10years, finally jeading to a nervous breakdown at the end of last year. Also my father is heading towards Alzheimers and went from very outgoing and active to barely being able to walk and you cant get a conversation out of him let alone a response at all any more. I always describe the brain zaps as like epilepsy. I get a weird thought or feeling just before it's about to happen and then a shudder that starts from the brain and travels down. While it's happening i have to let it go through and stop whatever i'm doing which can take upto a few minutes. I also have random depression both minor and major and energy drain I also have Pre-Type 2 Diabetes. I take medication for that, for anxiety/depression and to try and treat the shudders. So far the only thing that seems to help is talking to people about it. But i can be in a great mood and no stress at all and or go multiple days without a brain zap and then have several in one day

These manifested as sudden feelings of faintness in me. Never any pain. Just like my head suddenly went light and foamy. Not had one now in s week, just the odd dull throb with no pain. They occured the most when I had a creeping build up of stress, usually at work. I've fainted before several times (not related to stress) and the sensation is identical at least in me. Recently got my pressure checked and all fine. Could not even get a drop when we ran through the tests so definitely stress related. They are not gun but the less I worried the less common they were.

I've had this for 2 1/2 years now. One thing is for sure, this is NOT a result of anxiety. Extreme stress and anxiety can irritate the already present issue but the diagnosis of "anxiety" is a lazy one or it's an unwitting scapegoat for the modern world, big corporate poisoning that we don't yet have tests for in mainstream medicine. My NDs did intracellular content testing on me that showed extreme levels of heavy metal poisoning so I'm wondering if this is part of the problem somehow. All the mainstream medicine tests I had done were excellent. Nothing to report. My chiropractic X-rays showed mild scoliosis and a couple twisted vertebrates so, after one adjustment with him, my zappy symptoms disappeared for a time. He said it would take about 6 months of regular visits to get the problem corrected. He is CERTAIN that the zaps are a symptom of modern cell phone use causing our posture to be unnatural for unnatural amounts of time each day, combined with radiation damage from the phones. Seeing my Chiro regularly, replacing the router with an ethernet cable, putting my cell phone on airplane mode far away from my head, and doing gut health therapies keeps zaps at a minimum so I'm certain it's either GMO damage or wireless radiation damage. Wireless radiation has been proven to damage our microbiome significantly, cause the body anxiety, and also the blood-brain barrier permanently. It was proven in a 28 million dollar study in 1992-1998 by a leading radiation specialist and his team. They were hired by a major wireless company. That research info was blacklisted, the scientific team let go, and a scientist for hire, who would produce false research saying it was safe, was brought on. I strongly disagree that this is not harmless as sleep deprivation is widely recognized as a dangerous level of sleep deprivation - These zaps keep you awake all night long until your body is too exhausted to produce them and you fall asleep at 5 in the morning. The alarm goes off at 7. To all of you reading this, go to your region's LEADING chiropractor and get spinal X-rays, decompression therapy, and adjustments. See if that helps. Beyond that, wifi proof your surroundings. Get an ethernet cable instead of a router, keep your phone on airplane mode or turned off completely when you're sleeping or when the phone is on your person/in your pocket, etc. If you actually read the cell phone manual when you buy it, it says to keep your phone at so many inches away from your body at all times to try to protect themselves legally b/c they know it's damaging. However, how are you supposed to do that when you have to touch your phone to use it. Holding it in your hand isn't great either. Way better than up against your head but still. Lawsuits over brain cancer around the world are skyrocketing and the people are winning. Australia sued big wireless and won for assault on the people re:5G. There's a region in France that has banned wireless from all public buildings. Parents in Canada are aggressively fighting the Canadian Health Board over wifi in schools b/c children in the hundreds in multiple schools are very sick since the schools went Wifi. It's bad enough that there is a huge chance this brain zap issue is being caused by that but in the meantime, do the things I mentioned above to see if it will help. It's definitely not different things causing this issue in people b/c everyone has the exact same story. "All mainstream tests show perfect health, zaps happen only when falling asleep, sleep paralysis often accompanies zaps, sugar, coffee, nightshades, stress, gluten all bring them on aggressively." etc etc. That all ties perfectly into gut and brain health damage from radiation and spinal misalignment from bad cell phone/computer posture.

I have gotten them as a withdrawal from Cymbalta. I did 60mg down to 30mg down to 0 before I was ready so back to 30mg. My brain zaps feel like a surge of energy in my brain. There is no actual starting point it’s just like the whole brain zaps at once. My eyes are also effected and actually react to the zap by making a jump twitch of their own. I get dizzy. I get mad. I have a very short fuse (which is another withdrawal side effect). The zaps are constant and happen just about every 10 seconds with some not as bad as others. I also have Chiari (key-are-e) Malformation which is a defect at the base of the skull where a part of the brain slips out of the skull and puts pressure on the spinal cord where it enters the brain from the spine.

This is the first ive heard of these and not only as a symptom of antidepressants. Ive had these since childhood, I still have them. They dont cause me too worry a out what it is in guess because theyve always been there. Im not an anxious person and handle stress really well. Ive been in and am currently in a stressful very detail oriented position that holds the lives of others depending on my job being done well.....but I dont "stress" about it and take a very zen like attitude towards life. It still jerks me physically and mentally and I can feel my eyes twitch and can almost believe I heard it coming, but yet they happen so fast I never heard it coming but its almost like a bbbzzzzZZZZZZZAP!!!! and then it jerks me frim the inside and I feel my eyes twitch for a nano second but I keep them closed to let them recover for a few seconds, I take a few deep breaths and continue with my day. Anyone else relate at all?

The very first night this happened to me, I immediately saw a vision of large bright green and white snake 🐍. I could literally feel it slither over me for like a split second then it vanished. Afterwards, these head zaps have tortured me almost every night or even during the day when falling asleep for the past 7 years or so. Chewing peppermint gum and leaving it in my mouth before falling asleep has been the only thing that minimizes it for whatever reason.

I had these zaps after I quit my anti-depressants for I think 3-4 months. (I also have them when I have a fever from the flu) In the period after the meds I could trigger these zaps by switching my focus and sight from right to left and back. I read somewhere that these zaps occur at a moment you somehow switch activity from one brain half to the other. When you are on anxiety meds and want to quit, take your time to lower the dose. Don't just quit. You have a very high chance to get the zaps then. Just take about 3 months to lower your dose to zero.

I’ve been on an antidepressant called Cymbalta - Or Duloxetine, for about a year now. The medication works wonders for me but the one drawback is that I get occasional brain zaps. The don’t happen every day, but when I to get them, they are quite hard to deal with. Mine occur behind my eyes, and get triggered by side to side eye movement. I get a zap, that I then feel all the way down in my fingertips, and sometimes even in my feet (if I’m out walking at the time, this can be quite annoying cause it feels like I’m walking on beach sand - even though I’ve got my shoes on. I also hear my zaps, whenever I move my eyes - there’s a muffled white static sound. The zaps make me feel dizzy and nauseous, and after about 30 min of enar constant zapping, I’m so drained I need to lay down and rest. Mind you, the brain zaps do happen even while I’m on my meds, just not frequently. If I miss a dose, they are a given the next day or two.

Can't thank you enough for this video, wish I had seen it sooner. You're not alone. My zaps also stem from panic disorder, anxiety, & my STUPID decision to go cold turkey off my meds a couple of years ago. Now that my meds are back on track & I don't even blow my nose w/o consulting my doctor LOL, the zaps are still here & their severity/frequency depends on my anxiety levels. There are no miracles. But knowing what they are & where they come from makes them less terrifying, & not being terrified is half the battle w/ anxiety, right? 👍👍 Thanks again... Cheers 😊💙

In December, I caught a stomach bug that has stuck with me for months. The problem was that the stomach flu damaged my stomach causing reflux and lactose intolerance, and started to take antidepressants/anxiety because the doctor ordered it for now. Very small dose. We went to a therapist and she said I don’t have anxiety. Yay! But I still am ill. So, we got a specialist that said to go off dairy and I feel much better, but I still have to get an acid reflux prescription. Recently I stopped taking so much gravol. I stopped taking the antidepressants and me being stupid, didn’t tell my mom. I didn’t think it would hurt me to stop it but I was wrong. I don’t know if it is gravol or antidepressants withdrawal, but I can’t go up or down the stairs with ouch havig brain zaps. Almost passed out. I have only been taking half the amount of gravol but the zaps come back after 1-3 hours of taking the gravol. Haven’t seen a doctor because I’m afraid they are annoyed at how much we have been going and the fact that coronavirus is making them very busy. I’m hoping it’s nothing to worry about. I’m 14 and female, and having less nausea and way more zaps. The nausea never made me throw up but I’d just have to lay down for so long and hope the gravol would kick in soon. At one point my mom said I have an addiction, I was taking them as often as I could. Never at a high dose and I’d never take more than the package said. I’d wake up at 5:00 and need to stay up because I was too sick to lay down with my thoughts. I would put on a show and it would make me feel much better. I don’t want pity, but it seems like I’m asking for it. Everyone I tell just doesn’t think of how bad it is, they don’t think it’s anything bad and say that I’m over-reacting. I don’t know if not taking milk helped or if I’ve gotten so used to the nausea that it doesn’t bother me as much anymore...

hey man, thanks for your comment. My head felt a little whoozy right after an zap too. I wish i would have a quick fix for this... what has worked for me was getting my body into a relaxed state. Anxiety creates so much tension in our body and makes us feel uncomfortable or perhaps you got so used to the state you do not even notice it anymore but getting rid of all that built up tension will put your mind at ease too. Relaxing your body has an direct impact on your mental state. So try working out, stretching, yoga and progressive muscle relaxation techniques. These things work wonders if you do them regularly. Once you get your general stress levels these zaps will vanish
