I loved this movie because instead of cheap stupid jump scares, this movie let the horror build up but let the horror simmer in the viewer.

My comment shows up if you click the "show all" option. You're a Christian? No, choosing a life of child murder and human sacrifice does not beat a patriarchal society. Who the hell was the revenge against? Her parents were dead and so were "centuries" of people who did wrong before her. Puritans had a religion with an element of fear like most religions, and we just saw they were greatly justified in some of their most extreme beliefs about witches. So..justice is her becoming a witch? There is no evil in quotes here, what we saw in the film was wicked and darkness in its worst forms; killing a baby is evil and that's not up for debate except for VERY twisted individuals. Rather than become a slave to "dogmatically puritan society", she's a slave to the SAME people who slaughter other human beings for power and destroyed everything she loved. She's a slave to blood crimes and cold, self-serving women and Satan, who reveled in both the evils of female oppression and the murder of innocents. It's the most pathetic and weak choice anyone could ever make.

@GiRayne The father "had it coming", after he already lost two of his children and begged God's wrath on himself rather than lose any others; in other words, he was ready to die for them. He also refused to see Thomasin as a witch for a long time and then refused to harm her when he doubted her. It's easier if one can write off every other character, including three innocent kids, but it rather takes away from a lot of the story to me. The mother lost her MIND; she was damaged from grief, delusion and fear, which was a result of losing loved ones and seeing very real signs of witchcraft. Every family member reacted from fear which was not entirely irrational, as was proved from the beginning, and they also reacted from grief that warps rational minds even today. What choice did she have? You're assuming the town would blame her instead of at all believing that her dogmatic father, who they disliked, had taken the family into what turned out to be dangerous circumstances. If she didn't return to the town, she could have sought out Natives; anything would have been better than choosing serial killers as a new family for pretty dresses and butter. How is that not evil? I may not see EVERYTHING as black and white, but a blood-stained coven that kills infants to make flying ointment is very, very black. Some believe that Thomasin was really the murderess all along and finally lost her mind or died in the end; I can understand that as relieving or cathartic. But I can't view the film as half symbolic or half literal, so I've been describing it in the literal sense. However, I'm unclear now as to how you're seeing it. It's partly literal with some parables to you? And you see the supernatural forces as projections of fear, with Thomasin actually choosing the forest or a more harmless power in the end?

The father just lost a second child and had every other member of his family screaming accusations of devilry in his ears; I'm not surprised he lost it a little bit and shut half the family away from him. He still doubted the goat was possessed, an unusual thing for a Puritan. The kids should have been allowed back into the house well before dark, but the mother was so unstable, I wondered if that was part of the reason they weren't. After everything, the dad still begged to be taken rather than his children. "well, the text of the film tells us nothing about any of the tribes in the area." We know they were definitely around, and still a better option than joining serial killers. As for William's beliefs, the Puritans were known to be Calvinists; never a pleasant belief system, but he gave Caleb what comfort he could about the baby. Most people who lose sanity under duress had some weakness in their minds already, and that explains the mother too; the deaths and illusions of her children broke her. In the beginning, however, I took her facial expression to be one of eager happiness. The director also said deleted scenes showed a happier relationship between herself and Thomasin early on, so what followed was greatly related to the mother losing her baby and partly blaming herself, as well as the father and Thomasin. "because Thomasin clearly knew better; more grounded/rational, less fearful and obsessed with self-sin and damnation." Thomasin knew that she didn't steal the cup, wasn't a witch, and didn't harm Samuel; knowing her own innocence doesn't make her more rational and she showed the same fear as any Puritan at clear signs of witchcraft throughout. It's not surprising her mother found the story of Sam just disappearing to be weird. Of course it wasn't fair that she was blamed for the cup, but her mother's choice of words about it showed that she was still in doubt, and messed up, over Sam's disappearance. She was also the only one who blamed Thomasin for the cup or Samuel (besides the bratty girl-twin); the entire family and society as a whole did not. But some of the film's audience DID: many believe she was the title witch all along, causing calamity in the family to force them back to civilization. "It is the ideas of the culture - of their specific dogma - that fuels their delusions, and thus their reactions". But the movie shows they were clearly not deluded about the forces around them. As for the village, the Puritans in reality believed a whole group of lying or sick girls were victims of witchcraft, and it looked like a beast tore through the animals (plus the goat DID gore her father to death). There's certainly a chance Thomasin would be believed, and if she didn't want to trek a day's worth back, any other option would be better than joining her family's killers. There have been terrible choices all through history, including to be killed or to join a murderous group; the coven killed her family and didn't give a damn about her. What kind of life is that? She's about as free as a new hooker taking a high before the pimp sends her to the first john, only in Thomasin's case, she gets to kill people of all ages. It's like if a teenager watched Charles Manson kill her family and then joined his group of murderous whores; they may have seemed free, roaming around like regular hippies, but they were exploited by Manson and did his bidding. These are not innocent pagans romping through the trees, and my only peace with the ending would be if she eventually tried to destroy the group from within. "I as a viewer already damned the community and the family for their own sins". I damned the witch right away as soon as she put a knife to a baby, and personally see her and her bitch coven as far worse than superstitious people trying to survive and do right through their own limited understanding. Being victimized doesn't justify one becoming a murderer themselves. I can't watch the film through lens that are two different colors, part moral travesty and part personal triumph; there may be many allegories, but the witches are only ever portrayed as rotten, whether seen as literal villains or projections of deadly paranoia. Is a longer life lived in cold-blooded slaughter worth an eternity as a suffering slave to the worst evil imaginable? None of this reflects a healthy feminism to me; more like out of the frying pan and into the fire. I'd say Eggerich's intention regarding a Puritan's nightmare was fairly straightforward; he took the gloves off and portrayed witches precisely as the Puritans saw them. Forget Bewitched or Sabrina or even Harry Potter, 21st century audience: to these folk of old, witches were everything to be feared, the very personification of evil, darkness, and predatory power. This is why they feared them so and reacted so violently. Instead of a fiercely beautiful symbol of a strong woman, like most of the witch portrayals we see in fantasies now, we're shown a no-holds barred image of a hideous female leech and a group of younger bloody mongrels, pathetically bowing to the most evil male force in existence. Satanic slaves on a long leash, only for a while.

He should've directed the "Carrie" remake and she should've played Carrie. Hell , even the mom in the film could've played Margaret. Her talent and face can really give off the vibe of a shy and secretive girl combined with his cinematography, use of slow burn horror and subtle use of violence would've been perfect for the film's story build up and conclusion.

This movie is awesome and she is great and if you disagree you probably don’t like real movie that is fresh, has a good story and has its own unique tone, so I would say keep watching Michael Bays transformers because intellectual movies aren’t for you yet until you develop a sense of depth to your being, now with that I digress and I can get to my main point about this interview...did anyone notice how she said “uhhh ok, let’s do this” she must be a witch in real life lol

I'm an empathe, so I feel everything around me and within me and it makes me uncomfortable and the things that I feel scares me and the things that I see makes my skin crawl. Please help me? Please pray for me? What do you or your family know about witchcraft, santeria, or voodoo and can you have them work on my behalf? My name is Ovaldo Brown. Just ask around, and can you also work on my behalf, if you do it? I wanna join a new witch coven. How do I learn witchcraft and how do I become a witch? Please teach me how to do this please?

Loved the movie, and im surprised at the careful look of Mr. Eggers, i was imagining a dishevel guy like Peter Jackson or Von Trien, directors who don't give a fuck about their appearance, didn't expect a hipster behind this great flick, shows how wrong my mindset is
